It's Getting Dry Here

We're in a D-3 to D-4 Extreme drought here.

About the only wildflowers blooming are in my yard.

Texas Baby Blue Eyes.

The dust in the sky makes for some colourful sunsets.

Corn has been up for about a month, but it has stopped growing.

Nice sunset! Weather can be frustratng to tolerate in many scenarios, extended drought certainly is included. It does not happen often here in the northeast but I have family in the southeast that have had issues for at least 5 years. Rain affects the cosmetic issues in peoples lives but truly affects quality of life much more for some. To make your living at the mercy of weather can be stresssful. Heres hoping for climatic relief in your area.

Nice showing, Kentuck!
We still have snow around and it's looking good again after more then
10 years with our ponds drying up.

The corn still looks good and it's still early in season for them to grow well with some rain,...hopefully! Looks like the field was just weeded.

Tulips are perennial where I'm at, but anything in containers that doesn't do well or isn't getting saved at the end of the season goes into the compost pile. I'm bad about turning mine, too... but I'm lucky in that I have plenty of space to just let it sit and do its thing for however long it takes! If you don't have a lot of bulbs to discard, you could cut them up before composting... that would speed up the process. Or, you could refrigerate them for their dormancy, and reuse them, possibly.

Tom... Those purple queens (and many, many more not shown) I dig up and pot up and put in the garage. Yes, they are perennials and are supposed to come back but instead here's what I do: After taking them out of the pots in the spring (after last frost date), they continue to grow (they never died in the pot). They become so tall that I break off the long stems (the plants you see there have been broken off) take about 7/8 stems and pot them up. THey look beautiful in a pot and I am ready with those for winter storing. Again, I wait until the ones in the ground are tall, break off the stems there and pot up again. Around November (before first frost), I dig out the purple queens and pot those up. Why do I do that with perennials? Because someone told me that if we have a bad winter, they don't come back, plus.... when I plant mine out they are already huge! Hope I have enough energy this November to continue this because I love those plants. Carrie

riverrat1 - this is one of the few places where people could understand someone having a jam collection! That is one delicious sounding package. I'm pretty sure no one else here would appreciate the tangerine marmalade as much as I would. Or the blackberry jam. So if you would be so kind, just put them back in the box, stuff a little newspaper in there (you know, to keep them from breaking - wouldn't want them bouncing around like bb's in a boxcar, now would we?) and ship them on over here. Oh, and I tasted pickled watermelon rind for the first time this past June asn LOVED it. You can put that one in there too, just to balance out the box. Thanks.

just wait for the college ones lol. my dh is working on an honors BS/MS in engineering and has earned admission into several prestigous honor societies along the way. well every one of those societies has sashes, tie tacks, cuff links, tassle additions, diploma covers on and on...he's not into much of it but i will make sure he has his tau beta pi stole & honor cords and a few other things. i'm planning to spend as much on his grad party as our wedding plus we're also doing that 3-4 week hawaii trip in celebration too lol. good thing he will be making 4 times as much $$ when he is done! ~ liz

Yes, making a living where weather is involved is always a gamble, but in the last few years it is a gamble that we have been on the losing side of.

Yes, Konrad, the cornfield was just weeded, or about half of it was when I took the pic. Yesterday, the corn was all wilted when I drove by to check on it, but then it was the middle of the day, it looks better in the mornings and evenings.
