Flamingos...

I have always wanted to see flamings, last week we went to the Silver Springs Attraction and I finally got to see and photograph some.

They have unusual beaks.

Gorgeous feathers.

They like to hang out with other flamingos and preen.

Enjoying the clear water.

They are one of my favorite birds. Those look like Caribbean Flamingos.

Considering how ugly they look as chicks, its amazing how beautiful they are as adults. I have a picture of a two week old chick somewhere around here. I'll find it and post it.

Matt- that's a terrific picture of Flamenco Dancer and it's better than anything else I have of my plant. Mine is at least 3 years old and in a non-optimal part shade spot under the fringe of a large oak tree. It has survived OK for me, though not cane hardy, so I think you'll be fine in zone 6b. Mine doesn't really climb well however, after all that winter kill, though it still wants to be a lanky climber-type bloom on the end of long canes. Under these not very supportive conditions, my Flamenco Dancer puts out a bloom or two maybe every 6 weeks. Like with many roses, a zone warmer can make a lot of difference so I think Matt will have better results if he has surviving cane. When climbers have to regrow from the base they're rarely as robust as they would be in warmer zones. Ingrid, my experience doesn't much translate to yours, so don't judge your rebloom from my report. For me, this is one of those roses where I notice the stamens, though that might be because I don't get there till it has fully opened out. The stripes are the kind of soft pink that would blend well with the other roses you grow, Ingrid. Mine can have a sort of semi-double look in hot weather, but Matt's photo shows the optimum kind of bloom that it's striving for when happy. Thanks! I did end up looking at ‘Souvenir de PIerre Notting ‘ on HMF, and disappeared down that rabbit hole for quite some time. They do look quite similar in some photos, especially where Dr. Manners holds them side by side. Our temperatures started out in the 90's as soon as May hit. My daylilies barely had time to recover from root pruning or being new additions this year before they started struggling in 95+ degree heat. I have a core of really good daylilies that are both pleasing to me and tough, so last winter I decided to branch out and go back to my first love- just flowers of every variety. I ordered a few plants from a mail order nursery called Almost Eden - both non hardy and hardy. The plant quality and selection was triple A and the prices, compared to daylilies, was almost cheap. Anyway, now I have another catalog to look over during winter when my "experimental" bug starts to bite. You might want to take a peek at them too sometime................Maryl

I'm in Canada and the days just started getting cold and short. The plant use to be by a north window in the kitchen, but with the summer ending it wasn't getting enough sun so I moved it over to the other side of the house. It's a few feet from sliding doors with a south exposure. I think you hit the nail on the head with the temperature. For a few days, before we turned on the heat, the house was at 17-18C, definitely not tropical weather. We also opened the sliding doors a few times, but won't be using it during the winter. The heat is on now so I hope things will go back to normal.

Nice, Joe. I can't wait to go back and get more pics. Next time, I'm using the polarizer and Canon XTi, just to see what color they look!

How do you like the ergonomics of the XTi, it is one of the smaller DSLRs out there.

On another forum someone caused an uproar because he said "more women will probably buy the XTi since it is smaller and women tend to have smaller hands, so they will be able to handle the camera better". He was blasted by the other member, called a sexist, bigot and all sort of other things. I didnÂt think he was trying to be rude, in fact his statement is the same thing my wife said when she held the XTi. Just wondering your thoughts on it.

I went from the original Rebel (300D) to this. And one of the things I like about it is the lighter weight and smaller size. I picked up a 30D and thought that it was too big.
I am an avid what used to be called women's libber, but two things are irrefutable...men are stronger than women and have bigger hands! :>)
