Camera question

I have a freind that wants to get as he quotes a " Killer" camera what cameras would you recommend?

Going by the definition of "killer" the choice
would depend on who he was trying to impress.

The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III would be a good start.

Thanks..He showed me one in a newspaper article..It was a "Canon" I think it went around $1600 or $1700..I think he wants to stay in that price range..He said someone told him that Canon wasn't a great camera..I told him I am a Olympus gal myself..

Hi Ellen- If you're not worried about the $20, it can't hurt to try it. I've seen those, and from what I understand, they are "ok" little cameras with no frills. They even have them in the kids section. I've never tried them, but they can't be any worse than what people take with a cell phone. Having said that, I've seen several types of cameras for just a little more that and are very decent. Target is VERY good about sales, and you can usually tell when a camera is about to come out with a new model there because the sales get deeper & deeper. Seems to me I saw one the other day that was 79.99 or so. That's what I paid for my Lumix just before they came out with a new model a couple years ago. If you're simply looking for a beginner's camera, or a "nothing fancy" model that will take decent pictures for home use, there's no need to spend over $100, since what is available at and under that price are quite good for general point & click picture-taking. There's usually a sale on some model going on so you don't have to pay too much. The learning curve to the whole uploading & posting thing is minimal, since your new camera will likely come with software, and even if it doesn't, your computer will likely have something on it to get your pix uploaded for you. There are a number of photo hosting sites out there; I personally use Photo Bucket, and find it very easy to use. Oh, here's a thought: Google that camera model you saw and add the word 'review' to the end of your search text to see if anyone has opinions on them. If you can't remember the model, I bet a search for "cheap digital camera review" or "$20 digital camera" would also work to find you some information. And if you're really into looking up user review type stuff, I bet there's a photography forum (google that term) somewhere that you might find answers, too. Good luck!

Canon 20D. I love it, took a lot of getting used to, faster than I thought, had a lot of tips and good help and got it at an especially good deal at the time, brand new, from a Canon-authorized dealer (an important consideration for the warranty while it lasts). For as thorough camera discussion as I've seen lately, look on the OGR forum where someone was looking for camera recommendations, maybe on page 2 or 3 now. Some of it was simple and some too technical for many to grasp except those willing to do some homework which you should do regardless, covered both point and shoot cameras and dslr's, not all models of either but a good cross section. Every single one has its pro's and cons. I love mine because it had the least noise at the time which is a big consideration for low light situations allowing me to get a shot where even the best flash or time exposure would not work. I have a separate flash for mine which I love, cumbersome at times but worth it. For me it depends on being able to capture as many different photographic situations as I can be equipped to do, indoors w/flash or no flash, outdoors, landscapes, animals, birds, long-exposure night photos, near or far, will never get one very expensive lens, and flowers which are a big interest but only one on many. Some p&s that have large apertures may be more flexible indoors, am not read up on that laterly. Some of those situations you can capture with a point and shoot once you gain experience, but not all. They are not generally good indoors except at closeup using the onboard flash. They do have in-camera sharpening which requires the least post processing compared to all dslr's. Sometimes I can get by with only cropping/resizing and nothing else, some don't seem to notice but I can tell the difference even at smaller sizes. Most produce good quality, depending on your expertise, regardless of which camera, but with larger prints, there is a big difference. I'm not one to jump into an upgrade every time many others do it, would rather now have the 40D, but by the time I decide I may be ready for something else, they will have yet a new model or several. I always shoot RAW and at the largest size and quality possible and do not have enough storage with 2 hard drives and back up for 10 mp photos, like the lcd and self-cleaning sensor on the 40D although latter doesn't always work over time. No consumer camera I know of will capture all night photos if the subject is moving without blur except light trails from moving cars or distant stars and galaxies are interesting or for special effects.

These days, supplying a digital copy of an image derived from film is a real money maker for the developer. Many of the automatic developing machines use digital technology to make prints! The negative is scanned, color adjusted, and the prints produced by an internal printer. For these machines, its no trick to burn an image to a CD since one was made to produce the print anyway.

The facts pertaining to close up photography. It is under Macro in any photography Forum,"popphoto.com/forum, photocamel.com/forum" and probably a canon forum somewhere. The camera, Canon, Nikon Sony, Pentax, has no significant difference what ever type of photograph you want to take. With the proper lense any digital will do the job the skill part is up to the operator. For any of these cameras you need a lense that has a close focus setting. Often called a Macro setting or lense. Want to do a lot of interesting reading then Google Macro Photography. Most camera lens in the 28/55mm range with a f1.2 or better will focus down to about 1ft which is enough magnification for most flowers. jim

If he's going to spend that kind of money he should get a balanced,informed opinion and stay away from, "Someone told me"...unless of course they have something solid to say.
I'm sure he could Google "The pros and cons of Canon (insert name of camera)"
And any camera store should let him demo a few brands.

I agree with abr4xii, don't listen to someone else. Canon is one of the top seller for Digital SLRs. I'm sure this is enough indication that not everyone agrees with that "someone".

I agree too that he should go to a camera store and check out the different brand. What we like, may not be what he likes or his priority. ie: The comfort of a camera that is hold or felt in one's hand depends on the structure of his/her hand and fingers. The grip/comfort of handling the camera is important since it may influence the stability and time period of taking photos. Some people may like the weight and some may not.

One other thing. Although, he wants a "killer" camera, for the set price you've mentioned, he seems to have a limited spending. If that's the case, will he be looking into investing in lens or other accessories in the future? If so, he may want a camera brand that would allow him to upgrade with minimum cost. ie: Canon Lens are interchangeable. Meaning that if your friend upgrades the camera body in the future, most likely, he would still be able to use the same lens he had invested on.

This was the reason why I started with Canon since the age of 35mm, and I'm still on with it. Some of the lens I had for my 35mm camera still work great with my old and new digital SLR camera bodies. Even some accessories still work with my current DSLR camera.

Remember when we each prefer certain 35mm film brand due to the result of its color hues? It's the same way with the lens of each brand. I prefer Canon's lens.

He's probably talking about a Canon 40D with the lens. That is my next camera!

Olympus, Canon & Nikon all make GREAT cameras. I have cameras of all three brands I didn't like the early line of Nikons, but The D3 and D80 are on my want list. Canons are equally as good but none of them peek my interest. Sold my Canon because I was never using it unless I was shooting in extreme low light situations. The Olympus I had at the time had the best colors and required less post processing than the other cameras I was using. I found myself using it all the time, unless it was dark.

They are all good, there a lots of 'Fan Boys' out there that will dog the other brands. He needs to prioritize what he wants out of the camera - Lens availability, value.... Then go try them out.

FYI: My want list- Olympus E3; Nikon D3, D80.
