Can't figure out problem with my Nikon D60 :(

I hope you all won't mind a question from a very amateur, new "photographer" like me, but here goes.

I got a Nikon D60 in June. This week, something's happening to all my pictures: Every single one I take is not centered, meaning the picture is angled very obviously to the right. Imagine taking pictures, and every shot coming out to look like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The pictures are clear and crisp, just crooked!

I only have one lens, for now. Could the problem be my lens? I'm very worried. I love my Nikon.

I didn't drop the camera, but it has been with me in the car. I worry it got jostled, or too cold and something happened??

Thanks for ANY theories or ideas on how to troubleshoot, and suggestions about where to bring my camera?

These are very basic suggestions, but first I would set the camera on something stationary and take a picture. Next I would use the timer and take a picture. Compare these photos with the ones you took with the camera hand-held. I have a Nikon D50 and I have never had this problem unless I was not holding the camera properly or when I snapped the picture I jerked the camera. Does the D60 have the stabilization feature? If so, what you see through the viewfinder at a half-squeeze (locks in view) is what you should get on your photo. If the *test* photos look like the ones you described I would take it back to the dealer where you got it. Riding around in the car should not have caused a problem. I don't know about cold temps. The D60 got great reviews.

I have similar problems with my greenhouse grown cukes. One year I did call Extension Service and was told to feed with two things. One I'm pretty sure was bone meal. Whatever combo it was worked. I have never been able to remember the other and when I called Ext. Serv. again no one knew what to tell me. And of course, I couldn't remember who I talked to. (There is no Ext. Serv. where I live, so I've never gotten acquainted!) I would surely like to find out what that other thing was!

Pond leaking slowly--can't figure out problem

I would do the easiest first, which is check your plumbing to see if there is a leak to the drain. The valve may be leaking from trash in it, even though it is closed. Second, I would check for leaks in everything above ground. Just a drip would drop the pond that much. Then, I would physically separate everything above ground from the pond. That will tell you if it is the pond or the plumbing. Take the pump, etc, out of the pond and set the pump in a tub above ground and run all the system see if the water in the tub drops. If it is the pond, there has to be a hole somewhere. If it is the pond, look at the trouble spots, where connections are made or pots and rocks are set. I would then drop the water in the pond, say to half depth and see if the water still drops. That will tell you where to look for the leak. Be sure and look at the most simple, practical thing first.

Oh yes, I absolutely love my Gagg steam oven! After enjoying it for almost two years, I know I'd replace it in a heartbeat if I had to, despite the outrageous price. I've learned to steam many of the things I used to boil---potatoes or shrimps, for example. It's much faster than waiting for a pot of water to boil, and if you're in a severe drought situation, as we were last summer, it saves water. For steaming small quantities, I use an inexpensive Chinese bamboo steamer, placing it on the wire rack; a 10"-diameter one works fine, and you can stack two if necessary. Usually, they come in three-piece sets (two round baskets plus a cover), but since you don't need the cover in the steam oven, try to find a place that sells them singly (sorry, I can't remember where I got mine). But stick with the steam oven, and don't be afraid to experiment a bit after you feel more comfortable with the knobs and buttons. I'd try and focus the seating around the fireplace and leave a path between the kitchen and french doors, to get to whatever is out there. Then I'd put a desk or bookshelves and a chair in the corner under the bar, for perusing my cookbooks, going online while someone was watching TV, doing homework, paying bills, household management, etc. I would try and keep whatever I was trying to do in there out of the path between the kitchen and doorway. That way the spaces will feel more focused, intimate and cozy. On the other hand, if that set-up works for you, then I honestly don't think it is that bad. Just keep on the lookout for art pieces you like and you can gradually deck it out more. Curtains would add an additional layer of cozy. An area rug with a nice pattern in front of the fireplace would "tie the room together." I got a nice wool oriental rug on sale and put it over my living room carpet that was the same color as yours, added an instant feeling of being more than a "pass through" room, which it tended to be also, due to the layout of my house, you had to walk through the middle of the living room to get to the rest of the house. The only downside of putting an area rug over carpet is they tend to shift, but perhaps there are strategies for solving that problem.

Always-breeze has an excellent suggestion.

Fwiw, I had a similar problem with a digital camera after I dropped it. It knocked it out of alignment and it couldn't self-correct during focus to give a correct shot.

Obviously, you didn't drop it, but, the self focusing is a mechanical process and it sounds like yours is defective for no good reason. One of those "exception proves the rule" kind of things.

The experts might be able to give you some self-help tips on how to fix it. If not and if the camera isn't under warranty, my experience has been the cost of getting repairs can be prohibitive v. the cost of replacement.

I just wanted to say thank you very much for the responses. These are smart ideas.

I'm going to try all of your suggestions this week and I'll write back with what I found out. Fingers crossed that my camera will be OK. I bought it on Amazon.

I was just reading the specs on a Pentax K-7 and it offers a self leveling option. The intended purpose is so that if you have the camera on a tripod and find it is not properly leveled you can manually adjust the angle of the frame to level the shot without moving the tripod set up.

I ma not familiar with the Nikon D60 features, but I am left wondering if perhaps your camera has a similar function that can easily be user adjusted?
