Is this bad 'bokeh'?

and what could I have done? Cam was zoomed all the way...

Not relly sure what that is, but was assuming that the BG doesn't look good...Someone may correct me...I can take truthfulness and constructive criticism...Thanks!

Is it bad? I think that's a matter of opinion. If it looks bad to you, then yes it is bad. Did you want the BG to be more blurry?

What cathes my eye is not the bokeh, the picture seems underexposed. Was it taken through a window? That's what it looks like to me.

I looked at the exif - you were at 5x digital zoom, that might have somthing to do with it. Some other specs I saw, Shutter: 1/50, ISO: 50, F#:5. Set the ISO to 100 or 200, that would have increase the shutter a bit and brighten the colors a as well. It shows you were in 'aperture priority', could you have opened up your aperture more? The BG would have been more blurry, but sinc you were reaching into the digital zoom I think you may have been as wide as it would get.

Michaela, I forgot to answer your ? about the Sweet Autumn. I was doing a photo expose with my long lens (I don't think anyone saw me) on my new neighbor murdering that gorgeous Clematis right when it was blooming! It was making me sick at heart! I couldn't believe they would tear it down to the ground when it was blooming! You can see from the photos what they did and after. I enjoyed it every year, right across the street, the scent wafted over to my yard. That spindly little thing in my photos was a seedling from it I've tried to save. I will have to see if it's up this year. I never liked those fences (my neighbor put up one like it) but with that clem on it, which it was a strong support for, it was stunning every year, nobody seemed to ever have to do anything maintenance wise with it. They can be considered invasive by some. I don't know why people do the things they do. What they replaced it with I can't figure out what it is, it's all open with some kind of cement work to sit on, I never figured it out. On the other side of that fence was an old flowering quince. They must have wrecked that, too. At least they spared the beautiful redbud at the corner. I shouldn't gripe about lawn people when some of it probably got to looking like a weed patch, but they could have asked. My new guy mercilessly mowed over a clump of different yellow day lilies with a sweet little Roxanne geranium. It's hard for me to go running out there when they are mowing. I will see if by chance they are trying to come back. I lost every one of the iris except a plain yellow I bought at a plant sale. All the others were special and named. They can't be mulched so made that row which I constantly had to fight that awful Bermuda grass, it's almost got the better of it. I clicked on your name and looked at your photos. They are beautiful. You have a C. Rooguchi, too. You have lots of other clems I've looked at if I had room for them, the names would be familiar if I saw them. They are wonderful. Your rose list is impressive, too. I have or had, will have to look, a pretty red clem named after a lady and Polska. But I especially wanted to mention your pretty little boquet with the lettering. It's so charming. You must love pink! I do too, but think I've always leaned a little to yellow. I get volunteer stuff out front that blows in. I didn't think I wanted black-eyed susans, but I had bunches of them a couple years ago.

I took a dozen roses. This was one of those shows where almost all roses received a ribbon unless they were disqualified or really not good. My Mr. Lincoln was in the Classic HT class but only got a 3rd place. I also had a Reve d'Or in the climbers, but it receved a 3rd (I don't think it was open enough). I did an arrangement at the last minute, my mentor helped me and gave me two of her roses, but apparently I didn't label it correctly so it didn't get a ribbon. Honestly, the entry of the Prince in the Fragrance category was a last minute decision. The rose didn't want to open so I just said, what the heck, it's pretty fragrant, what do I have to lose. I think the fact that it was up against about 5 Fragrant Clouds and one JPP (that honestly smelled like cat pee to me) and The Prince has a different scent all together is why it won. So I guess the lesson is, just enter everything, know your categories and make sure you label stuff correctly. The judges I was clerking for wanted to disqualify a rose because it was labeled 'Abe Darby' instead of Abraham Darby. The clerking was fun. The judges I was with weren't too talky about why they were picking certain roses. There was another group that I was able to watch while my judges were picking their best HT. They were doing the OGRs, which I had 2 roses in, so I was evesdropping :). The one judge really loved my Lady Hillingdon, and let the other judge know that the nodding was normal. These were the same judges that picked The Prince and the woman judge said she loves the Prince and it's scent, so maybe that worked in my favor. I also spoke a lot to the photo judge and she told me that the backgrounds in my pictures were distracting otherwise they may have won. I guess most people take pictures especially for the show and use backdrops. I just took pictures that I had that I thought were good and entered them. I am still mystified about all the categories, but it makes a bit more sense now. I'm excited about entering again. I don't think I'll grow roses just to show. Those HTs are nice, but not really my cup of tea. I'll just continue to grow roses I like and enter them in the OGR or Shrub categories and see how I do. The prep room was amazing. I had no idea what went into showing. I received a lot of help, mostly from my mentor but also other exhibitors. When I entered Tamora, it had a side bud and I asked if I should remove it and most said it was distracting, so I did. I think that was a good move. I have to say that minis are fabulous, so perfect and so tiny! there was one really tiny one 'Midget' that everyone was going gaga over. And to see the people in the room put them together was amazing. Then to see the judges have to decide between them. It's hard because they are all so good, one could lose out just because the centers weren't perfect or uniform or just because another one was a slightly bit better. One of the people from my Rose Society won the King for mini's and was so excited. It was great to see.

Oh, Tiffy, I have absolutely no idea what the name of that azalea is. That bush was here when I bought my house 10 years ago. That pic does not do it justice, it was gorgeous this year. (That was a pic I almost erased before posting the link to my album!) Marianne: All I can say is take as many photos as possible and make good use of your zoom lens! The absolute joy of digital is being able to take a hundred pictures of one thing and being able to dump the 99 that didn't work. I just use a point and shoot, and I honestly 99% of the time use the auto setting. My first Panasonic had a 6 optical zoom. This new one only has 5, and I really miss that extra 1. Pitimpinai, oooh, I love that clematis. Purple is my favorite color! I have several clematises, but I think somehow they mostly ended up dark purple. I would really like to get a large white one. A couple streets away from me, someone has one on their fence and I just drool every time it blooms. Bonnie: If you're still following this! That yarrow I think is Moonshine...moonbeam? I love it. It's the only achillea I still have left in my garden. The others have all come and gone. Did I miss any other questions? I think someone asked about the name of the salvia. I don't know, I'm sorry. I am VERY type B about that kinda stuff and I never keep track of names. I do well to remember the official name :) Everytime I post over at the daylily forum I have to begin my post with "I'm sorry I don't know the name of this ...I just want to share....or....look at my beautiful seeding...uh, I have no idea who the parents are!!" I always feel so inadequate when I have to admit that! Aliska, I'm going to try to fiddle with some of the settings. I do enjoy taking photos. A friend of mine is raising her granddaughter and I am the official photographer. I keep a normal photobook with a tons of pictures in it, but since she was two I have been making books for her chronicling her year (This is the year I was two, these are my adventures when I was three...) Have you seen Shutterfly? I upload the pictures all year to there and then after her birthday I write the dialogue and pick the photos and presto, a hard bound book arrives. I have thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed doing that. I don't really have any memories of my early childhood, so I wanted to make sure she will always remember all the fun times we had. She loves reading the books. We used to read them as bedtime stories! Uh....grab a cuppa tea, I'm really going off topic! (like I haven't been!) Here's one of my photos that I just love. It was a total accident. My nephew pointed out to me later that I had a "sports" setting on my camera :) But then I wouldn't have got this cool pic! We were at a tiny rodeo in Beaver Creek Colorado when I took this.

I'm a bit puzzled as to why this 2 1/2 year old thread has popped up again, but I do appreciate all the photography expertise that everyone has shared. PM2, there's a second thread that came after this one if you'd like more info, linked below. I ended up getting a Nikon Coolpix P600 which has a 60x zoom (a bit longer than the 50x Cannon which I also checked out) which I like for long shots of critters in the field. I followed Jane's advice to go and hold a bunch of cameras and try them out, and found both the Canon and the Nikon comfortable, though the Nikon is a bit larger. The Nikon is also slower processing images to get ready for another shot than the Cannon, I think. I am still just beginning to learn to use it, largely using it on the standard landscape setting, though I have started checking out the different options and menus. I most often use it to take photos of critters and scenes we've spotted when we were inside since that's where it's easily available, though I also take it with me when I am going outside specifically to take photos. As Steve said above, "I also use my iPhone a lot because it's in my pocket, and it is often said that the best camera is the one you have with you." It doesn't do a great job on distance or small birds, but it has good color and is great to keep in my pocket to catch some of the surprises I see in the garden. I also use it for many of my landscape shots since it's with me and available when I'm working outside. The few times I've taken the Nikon out while I work in the garden, I've either lost track of where I've set it down, or found it in the way, so I usually just stuff the phone in my pocket when I am doing more than wandering around taking photos. Well, I guess I did wish the BG to more blurry and the cardinal to pop...I took thru a window opened but it was in the shadows shot at a slight angle...What I'm wondering is if I set the iso at 100 for all photos would that make it focus faster, too? and which way do numbers go to open the aperture? I get easily confused on the numbers for shutter and aperture, When i'm moving them I just watch for the 3rd one to turn red or white...It's like trying to understand algebra to me, and when I try to understand I get very confused...

Open Aperture more for a more blurry BG...which way would the numbers go?
Increase shutter to brighten colors with ISO settings at 100-200...Which way would those go?

The lower the f# the more open the aperture blades are, this creates a narrow depth of focus.

The shutter speed increase wouldnÂt necessarily brighten your color, I was suggesting to help get rid of any motion blur that might have existed. 1/50 is a slow speed to shoot at when your lens is all the way reached out, and into your digital zoom. Increasing the ISO would have helped increase the shutter speed. Plus, it makes the sensor more sensitive to the light so your colors would have appeared brighter.

Hi Juanita!! I agree with Joe... bumping your ISO will help tremendously... there is a lot of noise in this picture because of the underexposure. I usually never shoot birds at less than 400 ISO and an aperture of 5.6 on my Canon. My Sony is a lot more tricky. Usually no less than 200 ISO (using higher ISO just introduces more noise in the Sony) and have bumped my shutter speed as high as 1/1000 to "freeze" hummingbirds. That said... if you don't mind, I could do some post processing on this to make it acceptable if you'd like. Peggy

I can tell on your settings that you had low light.
When I see low light [no sun] I usually start out at about 200 ISO
Shooting birds, I try to shoot at about 1/250 to 1/500 / shutter speed.
If the bird sits absolutely still, you can go down on speed and ISO to give you a better picture.
To freeze the flying bird, go higher like 1/1000 or more sh. speed.
Sure, low ISO, normally gives you better a picture, color, but you need allot of light.
High ISO, like over 500, you get into allot of noise, grainy!

This is just FYI, I dont like to shoot above ISO200 on my P&S cameras. They do not handle noise that well.

In this picture, ISO 100, perhaps 200 would have been better when shooing inside of the tree, but I sure like to keep IS0
low as possible for getting optimum colors.

Oops, shouldn't have push that post button so quickly! I spent about 2 minutes on this. Using photoshop, I ran a noise action on it, corrected the levels and upped the saturation a tiny bit. Hard to work on a small picture like this as there as jaggies in both pictures from compression.

I love the pic's all the same. The Red one adds some variety to a group placement. But, if you don't like it. Than, hope for another chance to get a better photo. They say, it's not what I think, but , what you think.
