Can you recommend a good photo editing program?

I currently only use Microsoft picture it and Picasa, but I really want a program that will do the black/white photos but leave one little section in color. Picasa can KIND of do this, but not to the exent I am looking for... Also I can't afford to pay an arm and a leg... which one do you recommend?

I like Photoshop Elements. I paid around $50 at Sam's Club.

GIMP is free and a great program.

A few inches e.g. 3 or 4" or more in the Spring. What source do you use for your aquatic plants? I am unfamiliar with Thalia." I just ran down the basement to see what brand and it says 'ShopVac'. 14 gallon capacity. It is red and black. My neighbors gave it to me. It is on wheels and sits in a partial container (can't explain that too well). 10.5 amp motor. It has a long hose and there are small wedge attachments, brush attachments, etc. It shuts off when the holding tank is full and I unscrew a cap and all the water and leaves/gravel shoots out around my pond plantings. You have to be careful with it - it will suck up fish or frogs (not that I've done that) but it does have powerful suction. If my fish or frogs get nosy and try to swim near the suction tip I move it away. It is easy to move around the pond as it has a handle on top and I can pull it along on the wheels. My pond is approximately 8 x 10, about 19 to 21 inches deep. When I do a partial water change I take it down anywhere from 3 to 6 inches. I bought my Thalia a few years ago at Lowe's. It needs a really big pot as the plant itself is 3/4 feet or taller and the bloom stalks shoot up six feet. The flowers are purple and smell and look something like lilac. The bees like them. The base of the stems are reddish and the leaves sort of blue/green. You can buy Thalia at Lilypons (online). It is a native plant. There are tropical versions too, but mine is hardy as I leave it in my Zone 7 pond all winter. I'll search around for a photo of it. Here is a link that might be useful: ShopVac Link

Can you recommend a good canna dealer?

I am looking for an old-fashioned red leaf canna, flower is red also 6-7' tall. Had them years ago, gave many away and have since lost the bulbs having the red leaves. Now in Fl. and would love to buy them. Never knew their exact name. Tried Black Knight and had poor results compared to the old fashioned canna. Have had good luck in the past with Costco bulbs and bloomingbulbs.com. Good prices and great about satisfying the customer.

Are you on Mac or Windows? I use iPhoto for almost of my editing - it does just about everything that needs doing: cropping, levels, effects, etc. Also what kind of camera are you using? My Nikon Coolpix can do a number of those things right in the camera. Oh hhah - just noticed the date of the OP - imagine the class is over now... GIMP is just like Photoshop...it's fantastic, there are tutorials online. Easier still is photobucket which has a clone stamp tool....an eraser. Tuxpi.com has neat picture frames....

I will second photoshop elements. And any of the Scott Kelby books to go with it. You can check at your local library and borrow the books so they won't cost anything.

I also say Photoshop Elements. Very easy to use. I'm still new to editing and did exactly what your talking about as my 3rd editing work. I think I did great for it only being one of my first things I did.

I use Photoshop CS2 exclusively now, waited for years for it. I bought 2, one for myself and one for my gdaughter for $299 each from Adobe, WACOM had a promo w/my tablet and I used my Elements that came w/my cam to give to my gdaughter so she could keep upgrading. But starting with Elements is good. They may have more specials when you want the full power of Photoshop and where you can upgrade at the cheaper price.

I started with Paint Shop Pro which is cheap, but Photoshop is what most of the pros use, the industry standard. I've read that Picasa isn't too bad, but somebody keeps sending me their photos from their website, and the quality is not too good, I don't know if it's because she doesn't know how to use the camera properly or Picasa resizes and compresses them too much.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 beta is out now and you can try if free by going to their site and downloading. I believe the beta version will work until it is released sometime this Summer. The downside is no help support.

you have to have CS2 to try the CS3 beta
