Need advice on a digital camera

I'm interested in using this for all occasions, but would really like something that I can take photos of hummingbirds.....I am really not at all savy on what all the numbers do/mean and what is most desirable.

how does this sound? This is a Kodak Easy Share Z1275 model

It depends on what you want in your humming bird shots. Is an artful, blurred wing ok or do you want to see the feather detail? Also, humming birds are nervous, darting little creatures. It takes a very fast response camera to capture a fleeting instant - no waiting around for the shutter to click after you press the button.

If you want to capture wing detail, you need very short exposure times on the order of 1/1000 of a second or faster. Slower exposure times can give a nice picture but with blurred wings. When hovering, a humming bird wing beat is on the order of 60 beats per second.

Just MHO, I wouldn't buy that camera for bird photos. Not if you think you might get serious about photography. Depending on your budget, consider Canon S3 IS or S5 IS (the S2 IS takes good photos also). Panasonic FZ20 or FZ50. The S3, S2 and FZ20 are older models that can be bought for around $250. The Canons work well with tele converters (you might want to get into photographing birds at greater distances. The Canons have 12X zoom lens and shutter speeds 1/3200 fast enough to capture the beat of hummer's wings. There is a learning curve with these cameras but study and practice will pay off with really nice photographs. When starting with a new camera, the thing is not to give up. There is no film to buy or processing fees so you can take a thousand practice photos for almost nothing.

Visit the bird watching forum and ask this same question mentioning hummingbird photos. Ask the folks which cameras they use and if they will show you a couple hummer photos. There is a thread now about new cameras. Happy hunting. Marnie

I have an Olympus C-765 UltraZoom digital camera. It takes great close ups. I have had several Olympus digital cameras and have been pleased with them all. Depending on your budget you can probably find several that take good close ups. If I had the money I would get the Canon Digital SLR. You might have better luck with answers on the regular forum or a forum that is for photography! good luck! There are tons to choose from!! P.S. this is a closeup picture taken of cicada bugs we caught last summer. This picture has been downsized tremendously and the details are still pretty clear. This was taken with the above camera. 24 photos? W/ flash? Plus using the LCD? Sounds like enough to eat the battery to me. My uncle had (has?) a Sony from a few years ago that uses AAs, and his had about the same performance. He's much happier with the rechargables. My Olympus E-20 can use 4 AA batteries or a Lithium Ion battery. The LiIon is much more powerful (you can tell with how fast the flash 're-sets'), but they're expensive. I have a couple of sets of AA rechargables for the camera and the external flash, and I can get off about 50 shots before I notice the flash start getting weaker. At max resolution, my memory cards only hold 52 shots, so I just take the oportunity to swap the batteries and memory card all at the same time. I think those rehargables are 1600 mAh, but as I've said, I've seen much higher capacities these days... Actually, I don't know how many digital cameras these days take AAs anymore (though I haven't looked, to be honest). Most that I've glanced at seem to come with some type of rechargable battery pack with a seperate charger or a cord/cradle to recharge a non-removable rechargable battery. I have decided to go with the Rebel XTi myself. The reviews on www.dpreview.com helped me, so I would check that site out, maybe it will make your decision easier. Bear in mind that the Rebel XSi is due out in a few months. I think it is $899 with what I understand to be a good kit lens. I had debated on waiting, but Im impatient, and its a little out of budget. Its going to have a live view LCD, which is good, 12mp, and a feature that the XTi lacks, Spot Metering...a very useful tool! Anyway, Hope that site helps....good luck!

Okay Its the camera that Iowagirl2006 said.It came with rechargeable batteries.We got it at walmart and the girl that waited on us said she had it and loved it.She said the batteries lasts along time since it was rechargeable.Also she has 2 weeks to take it back if she does not like it.She is going to day and take some flower pics and than go get her dogs and flower pics printed out to see how well they turn out.I was going to buy me a new digital one but am waiting to see how Ash's pics turn out.Thanks so so much for all who answer my post.I truly apprecaite your time.Also we got recharger.Also the lady said it was a step up from the one that was on display.Not sure what was on display other than it was a Kodak.Ashley was looking at them and asked if they had the one on display.The lady looked and said we do not have the camera on display no longer because we want be carrying it no longer.She than pulled this one out and said this is the next one,a step up from the one you wanted.It might have been on sale.The lady said it was a good price for the camera. I perfer Canon.I have a very good digital Canon Digital camera.Greg had gotten Ashley a good Canon flim Camera.he paid right at 800.00 for it.Ashley is very good in taking pics.She has made some great pics using the Canon Camera,blowed them up.I have several framed in my home of a Sunflower,old homes,lakes,birds,animals.She made a pic of a old barn and had it blowed up,gave to someone.They loved it.I have to brag even though she is my daughter but she is so good at this.She was going to go to school to study Photograph but she choice Grooming school.But greg told her she still could do pictures on the side.Someone asked her to take pics of a wedding.But she was not off.Hope I have answer some of the questions.I am not very smart about cameras.Sorry.
