have you sent slides off to be scanned?

I thought I posted this question, but it seems to have disappeared. I am about ready to send off hundreds of old family slides to digmypics...a place that was recommended, but I am nervous about doing it. Has anyone actually sent off slides to be printed? I would really appreciate knowing if it turned out okay. They are irreplaceable.

Maybe instead of sending hundreds, you could start with a smaller number? I think that's what I'd do in your situation. For my own project, I bought a Canon scanner that takes slides and various sizes of negatives.

Hi Susan, That is something I have been thinking about doing, but it is pretty pricey and the more you send the better the price. I have hundreds. I still might though. Does your Cannon scanner have the "ice" technology by chance? The ones I looked at that did were really expensive. We have done some on our scanner, but I think the outcome could be better. Do you have to do one at a time?

I would have a hard time tossing the scanned slides also - but understand your space limitations. I have an Epson flatbed V200 scanner that I scan slides with. LOVE IT! Love it even more with my new computer that runs so much faster (didn't have any trouble with it working on the new Windows 7 OS either) My Epson is no longer available, but the V500 is pretty much the same unit. I looked up both the Epson and the Cano Scan on Amazon. Looks like both will scan 4 slides at once. I have done large batches (hundreds - not thousands though). It take a while, but if you leave a stack, and just swap them out while you are on the computer, you can get a lot done! I like reading the reviews on Amazon - gives great reviews from people that have actually used the unit. Both the Epson and the Canon have lots of reviews. Price is very similar. I like the Epson flat bed personally. You can scan documents or photos. I find it super handy just to copy a paper when needed. It is NOT an all in one. Just a flat bed scanner. But if I need a copy of a paper, I can just hit "copy" and it will scan and send it to my printer. I scan at 600dpi - which is plenty. Unless you are going to print somthing wall size, you don't need to use the super high settings. It will just make a huge file and take a long time to scan. Make sure you have a couple back up sources for you scans if you are going to dispose of the slides. DVD's can go bad - hard drive fail... I would use at least 2 different backup methods. Here is a scan from a slide from the late 40's or early '50's. Slide had dust and a few scratches.....

Oh! sorry, brody! He diagnosed my cancer. He was right when all the other docs and radiologists thought I was crazy! lol Well, I'm here! So there wasn't anything really bad, or I figure I'd be in the hospital. I don't imagine that I will hear anything until Monday. So, I guess that IS good news! thanks for all the prayers! I suggest speaking to a conservator who specializes in photographs. They may be able to recommend a method or product to fix the slides. If the slides can not be fixed, you can scan them and then fix the scans with photo editing software. I know it will not save the slides, but at least you will have the photos. And whatever you do, get them scanned before you or anyone else starts trying to clean them. Which brings me to the scanning: If you have a lot of photos that need to be scanned, it may be more cost effective for you to buy a scanner and do it yourself. You can get a very good scanner relatively cheaply and they are easy to use. You can get free photo editing software (Gimp) that has all the necessary features you need in order to fix the inevitable colour shifts and scratches in the photos, or if money is not an issue, you can get Photoshop or similar software.

Some cards have a small sliding "lock" on the edge of the card. Make sure that is "unlocked". Beyond that, when viewing photos on the camera and zooming in and out, sometimes I'll "lock" a photo file. Select the locked photo, then rehit the lock button to unlock that file. Lazypup gives great advice. People seldom reformat their cards. With all the files that are created and deleted on a card, occasionally little bits of code can be left behind, or get jumbled. They can corrupt the card. So every once in a while, reformat the card. It wipes it clean and lets you start anew.

Below is a link to my scanner, Canon's 9950F. I don't know about the "ice" technology, but it was highly recommended by the folks at DPReview and others. I believe you can scan slides in batches. I think I paid around $350 for it.

The reason I know so little about it is that it's still in the box. I was living by myself when I ordered it, but since then my son and DIL have moved in temporarily, and I no longer have a place to set it up. That's my excuse, anyway. :-)

I see that Amazon no longer has it available. By the time I get it up and running, it will probably be outdated...

alisande, Thanks for that info. After looking at the reviews of your scanner, I am wondering if I should do them myself. It sounds impressive. You can do a batch of 35 at a time it says, btw.

If you do scan your slides you want to scan them at a very high resolution, do NOT use ICE if you have it - tends to cause pixelation when enlarging slide images for large prints, and be sure to use a slide holder and use a can of air to clean each slide before scanning.

This is part of my business that my hubby & I own and have learned alot of little tricks to getting the best quality prints from slides.

lynn, I saw your email after I did send off some slides. I decided to try a small batch first and see how they come out. It was confusing to me...I dont know that much about it. Had to choose dpi and I went with 2000 and they do use the Ice technology, so I will let you all know how they come back. They are putting them on a disc...discs. Several kinds. I tell you, I had to study that site for a while !! I just want to print 4x6 prints.

Just a note to be very careful when using canned air on anything. I love the stuff, but if you jostle the can you can end up with something other than air on the surface you're spraying.
