Washington again

This was across the Potomac at Gravelly Point, just north of National Airport. It was a good place to watch planes take off. The almost 2 megabyte picture of the Monument is so sharp. I wish someone would come up with a way to resize pictures and not lose the sharpness.

Gmom,
I see you are using photobucket. Try changing the upload options so the saved file will be larger. It wont solve the problem but it will help. The thumbnail size will not change at all, I like the 1MB size but you dont have to use that. Anything larger than the 492x369 dimensions your pictures are are displayed will at show more detail. Hope I could help.

Thanks, Joe, for the info. I thought all pictures had to be below 100kb to be posted on this site. This one I used Photobucket to resize and upload at 1 mb. It does look sharper, too. A lot of people have dial-up (thank goodness we have DSL now) so you really have to want to look at a picture to take the time for it to open. Now to see if the forum will accept the larger file. Gosh, it's huge.

some twigs dying is normal in Washington Navel. Considering the amount of work you did with the roots, really the tree looks to have very little shock. I would have expected more set back after that sort of transplanting. As to the flowers, it is also normal for there to be a big blossoms drop. Also normal is for there to be only a very small percentage of blossoms that make a fruit. From what I see, just keep watering daily and let is settle into it's new home. Light pruning of the brown twigs would be good, bot don't cut into the green. Just remove the dead wood. It would be nice if those lovely scented blossoms lasted longer wouldn't it?

Since when you include the hardiest cultivars the minimum temperature range tolerated expands significantly it clearly is not possible to assign a single hardiness zone to the entire species with any serious accuracy. However, it is possible that there is a zone that most individuals are hardy to, apart from exceptional forms. This would probably not be as low as USDA 6 or 7 because of the numbers of them that burned here in USDA 8 in 1990. It is probably, to a large extent a matter of how high (or low) an altitude the original seed source grew at in the native habitat. Or perhaps variation within closely related seedlings is possible, as occurs with gums (eucalypts), where seedlings coming out of the same pods appear to have 10F or more differences in cold tolerance.

Ok, we have possible snow in the forecast for tomorrow!!!! I started to harden off because the days have been warm and sunny but I'm afraid with all of the rain and/or snow in the forecast for this week they will get very very leggy. Should I put everything back under the lights when they can't get into the sun?

You should find clusters of eggs right against the edge of the deeper bodies of water...or if you wait a couple more weeks, you'll be able to scoop up lots of tadpoles! If your water is good, the frogs will show up on their own, either hopping, or more amazingly, as eggs on the feet of birds. I CAN"T STAND people who walk out with poison and spray. I'm putting in a large NWF habitat, and both my enighbors have agreed not to, (spray) and I agreed to mulch their beds by my house with newspaper and pine straw, (cheap, effective, and organic) whereas they would use weed spray. Some people are ignorant, in which they can be taught, others are just plain stupid, like your person. Glad you laid down the law. HOpe the frogs show up....they sure did in our new pool last year, I can't tell you how many I rescued and ran down the the creek or pond! Scoop the tadpoles with a bucket, and slowly pour the water out..they will mostly stay in your bucket. Remember not to shock them when you put them in your pond, same temparature etc.....and slowly mix the waters as the Ph etc could be different. You have to move quick as your oxygen supply will run low. PS ask the poison man if he would eat the stuff himself?!

No problem. When I am posting a picture that large I do try to remember to use a linked thumbnail though. I guess there are some dial-ups still here.

I see that the resized pic of the monument has way less dots per inch than the original...The resizer I use maintains the DPI and the picture loses no sharpness.
I took your original and resized it to your dimensions and got a sharper print.

Maybe try it.

Thanks, all. Joe, even when I use different upload options, the picture is more than 100 KB. But in checking the properties of some pictures that others post, I see that they are more than 100 KB.
Leslie, I am trying the program you suggest. So far, I haven't made much progress with it. But I'll keep experimenting. Thanks.
It will be nice when these forums are fast again.
