Hi,

I've never posted on this forum before, but it seems like a helpful place. I'm wondering if it is necessary to keep 35mm photo negatives these days. With all the new scanning technology, they sort of seem like a waste of space to me. Yet I'm a little hesitant to throw them all away. Thanks for any advice.

I keep old photographs and negatives, too. We have a scanner that scans and restores pictures and I have had some very pleasant surprises to see pictures that I haven't even known existed. I don't entirely trust the digital age and worry about archiving some of the pictures. Especially those of family, and babies that have grown up in the digital camera. It's just not the same as having a negative to fall back on. Having said that, I don't know if having your digital pictures printed by a photo shop would produce negatives, too.

Thanks for your response. After nearly throwing them all away, I retrieved them and put them in a separate box. I think I'll get a fire proof box to keep them in in case anything ever happens to the photos. I'm not much of a photographer, but this is 20 years worth of pictures of my kids, parents, etc.

Since the only picture you posted is that window -- and if that is your primary concern -- then before the next rain, you could act to at least temporarily block water into your basement via that window until you can resolve the greater issues. Ultimately you may need a window well and, as Jennifer Hogan suggested, a French drain. Also agree that if the problem is severe ... throughout the yard -- more than just this window -- a landscaper may be your best path. Just make it clear that your objective, at least for now, is only to resolve the water issues not "landscape" for looks, potentially creating more yard work than you have the time or energy or budget to maintain. Short term, if it is supposed to rain today/tonight where you live, you could invest in a plastic flower bed border to create a half circle around the window and cover that border and the window with some thick clear plastic covering the border and window.-- think table cloth plastic from the Walmart fabric department. If, in addition to duct tape, you have old curtain rods or broom handles, they might help you prop up and hold the plastic until you can have a few days of dry weather and a plan to fix the problem with a more permanent solution . Then you can use your flower bed border to create a flower bed.and/or redirect rainwater run off coming into your yard.

I would not like worrying about small items (and think about baby and toddler socks, which are even smaller) getting back behind the gasket (a/k/a boot) and in fromt of drain holes on a washer. Maybe a mesh laundry bag would be the best solution. IIRC, i used one for baby socks when our granddaughter was very young and I had to wash her entire outfit immediately :-p after a bad diaper leak on the days I kept her. FWIW, i just now Googled the problem and its not just SQ FLs. Lots of pics and solutions. Always socks. LOL . All my life i would hear people talk about washers "eating socks" when everyone had TLs. It never happened to us. I guess we were lucky.
