 o
neutered cat??

we just rescued a strange little kitty we've named Lenis.....and took him in for his neutering and some dental surgery.....and i swear, he's still got his....."junk".....it was two weeks ago, and i wondered at first if it was just swelling....but it hasn't gone down at all.....and he was on antibiotics for the dental work.....and he's not sore or anything...

i've had male cats my whole life, and even have 2 others in the house right now for comparison.....nobody is quite as well endowed as this boy is!!

i haven't been back to the vet just yet.....just thought i'd check in to see if anyone else out there has an altered boy who still appears to have a full set of testicles?? or did my vet rip me off? lol!!! ( i'm kidding.....i love my vet!!)

what a strange question!! :)

Was there stitching, redness or other indications of surgery in that area when you brought him home?

No harm in phoning the vet's office and having them double-check. Maybe there was some mis-communication. The cat's chart should indicate what was done.

That's an interesting question. Maybe Meghane will weigh in on this. I think there are 2 different ways of doing the procedure. I've known male cats who have been neutered while the vet kept their scrotum in tact...for cosmetic reasons, I guess. Other male cats I've had had the whole deal snipped...and looked like females from behind.

Maybe they forgot to neuter him.................

I adopted a cat who was 2 years old, and un-neutered. When he was neutered at 2, it took him a full month for the swelling to go down for him to "look" neutered, because he was neutered older than a kitten, and mature.

How old is your cat? If you are worried, pop into the vet's for a quick check.

Neutering a cat is just making small incisions in each side of the scrotum and taking out the testicles. The vessels and epididymis are tied together upon themselves and then you just cut of the testicles. There are no sutures, and the scrotal sac is left to heal on its own, albeit empty. In adult cats, it takes a long time for the sac to become reduced in size. In kittens everything shrinks down very quickly- more elasticity in the skin.

I've never seen a scrotal ablation in a cat, but I suppose it could be done.

see, i knew i would learn something today if i posted my question :)

that makes sense to me now, meghane.....i think most of us think the entire sac is removed because most of our cats were neutered as kittens.....Lenis is definitely an older boy.....he might even be in the 10 year old range we don't know since so many teeth were damamged or missing.....but we know for sure he's NO kitten :)

so i'll keep my eye on things.....so to speak....and i'll confirm with my vet the next time i see him

thanks everybody
lisa
