so frustrated with the vet!!!!

My 4 year old Cocker showed signs of severe pains two days ago. He was fine one minute and then he started shaking, whining, arched his back and collapsed, got up and ran under the bed. Panting, shaking and came to me bury his head in my arms. It's like he's trying to pass something through his rear that's very painful. I rushed him to the Vet.

They took X-Rays and blood tests found nothing wrong and sent me home with pain pills. That was two days ago. Brought him back this morning having had another episode. They are doing more tests, ultrasound, X-Rays and more blood work, still find nothing except he has a few discs in the back that are a little close together. They also found a bruise on his belly and asked me if we have rat poison anywhere in our house. NO! I have no poisons. They are checking his platelets now. I am so frustrated!!!!! It's Friday and no answers. I pick him up at 5:00. What if he has another episode over the weekend and I still have no answers??!!!

I've had dogs all my life but never have I witnessed something like this before. I'm at my wits end. I'm a basket case.

He hadn't had a bowel movement for two days. When he did this morning was normal and then the next one has runny. The Vet thinks maybe he's in pain from his back when he tries to pass stool but I don't think that's it. I know my dog and this is not back pain. This is a pain that comes from nowhere and his stomach tightens and he starts panting heavy. Almost like a seizer without having a seizure.

RE: so frustrated with the vet!!!!

Just picked him up from the Vet, again. He has a huge bruise on his stomach ... where did that come from??? He did not have a bruise last night. Vet asked if I had rat poison around NO NO NO!!! We do not use any poisons in my house ... not even bug spray! The Vet gave him a shot of vitamin K as a precautionary as the bruise may be bleeding through the skin from rat poison. Vet thinks he could of ate a mouse or rat that one of the cats brought home that may have been poisoned. Why would anyone use the horrible stuff on a creature. Anyway, the signs of secondary rat poison is bleeding through the skin so I have to keep a close eye on him.

He also may have a pinched nerve in his spine - we don't know. He's on anti-inflammatory just in case. X-Ray shows a few vertebrae that are close together which indicate a swollen disk. Have to keep him quiet for 5 days which is not an easy thing to do with a dog that was a mountain goat in his past life.

I've been seeing this Vet for over 25 years. The practice has grown so much and it's often hard to get in for an appointment. Vet's don't always know the reasons why an animal is sick. They don't make that much money considering all they do. If it was a human the prices would be so much higher. Most of the time they have to read a creatures mind. It's just frustrating when no answers can be found.

RE: so frustrated with the vet!!!!

I feel your frustration, and I can guarantee you that your vet may be as frustrated, but they need to keep a professional air.
Your first posting made me think that your dogs back went out. My dogs back goes out every now and then. I KNOW it by watching him carefully. He will quiver when laying down and will not raise his head very high when walking. First thing I do is give him so Rescue Remedy in order to calm him and keep him calm.
I have been fortunate in that his orthopedic surgeon has been a god send and is will to work outside the box in treatments. I give my dog a half a vicodin once every 4 hours or so, making certain he has a pepcid and some food in his tummy so the meds are not so hard on his stomach. It works wonders for his back and he rarely has to lay low for more than a day. If I could afford it, I would take him to a chiropractor who specilizes in adjusting dogs. My previous bone cruncher worked on dogs and had quite a following. Good luck with your pup, and until you find out just how bad your dogs back is, I recommend the Rescue Remedy in order to keep your dog calm and in a non suffering state. Good luck. And please remember, medicine, even veterinary medicine is called a practice - not all dog react to things the same way to the same things. If your vet has gotten too big and impersonal for you, then it may be time to go eleswhere. Please repost and let us know how your pup is doing...

RE: so frustrated with the vet!!!!

dances - what was the result of the platelet test? Dogs can have low platelets as a result of rat poisoning BUT ALSO for other reasons. I know this, unfortunately, because we lost a dog to thrombocytopenia, probably due to cancer. The fact that your vet kept asking about the rat poison makes me want to know the result of that test.

Otherwise, I am not much help. As I'm sure you know, dogs can be in pain for so very many reasons. Maybe the bruise was caused by his thrashing around in pain?

I am so sorry, I really hope you can get an answer. Is there an emergency vet or one that works weekends that you can go to if need be this weekend?

Sending all good thoughts your way.

A video of the behavior would also be of help to your Dr. It's often difficult to communicate exactly what is going on effectively. If the Dr can see for themselves it could help the diagnosis a bit. Have they suggested an ultrasound? I'm no expert but that would be a consideration as far as the mystery bruise.

RE: so frustrated with the vet!!!!

Most times, it is as frustrating for the Vet as it is for you. If dogs and cats could just tell us what hurts it would be easy, but they can't, so the Vet has to go on the physical and lab findings. I would ask about an ultrasound also for the belly bruising.

We also had a dog that had back and neck problems. Your original post sounds like what our old gal went through. With disc disease the pain does come and go suddenly. The pain involved is very intense. The first time she had problems, there was no doubt that surgery was our only option as she was just 8 y/o and she had ruptured. The surgery gave her another 7 pain free years.

Good luck,
Linda

sorry, just going by your title.

If the practice has grown so large that you have trouble getting the same vet, or the vet that you prefer, you might speak to someone about that.

RE: so frustrated with the vet!!!!

I thank you all so much for your responses. I checked everyday but didn't have the time to respond. You're all a knowledge and caring bunch that's why I posted in here.

I tell you, I was so freaked out. As I said, I've been through just about everything but not this. I think what bothered me the most was the vet giving me a prescription for pain pills without any sort of diagnosis. I just thought that was so odd.

His platelet count came back okay. They did do an ultrasound. No signs of anything funny in his bazillion blood tests. The vet has called everyday to check on him. So far he's acting normal. I took him off the pain pills but he's still on the anti-inflammatory. Today he was shaking his stuffed chicken like he wanted to rip it's head off so that's a good sign he's on the road to recovery.

I have a strong feeling he got up on the table to look out the window and fell off hurting his back and bruising his belly ... what else could it be? Anyway the table has been moved from the window and there are things on it to prevent his jumping on it.

Ruari is 4 years old and I pray it's not disc problems. If it is, we will cross that bridge hand in paw and I will be sure he gets the best treatment. I will be posting and asking for lots of advise should that be the case.

I wonder if there are dog chiropractors near by? Maybe that's something I should look into???

I do think it's time to shop around for a new vet. Mine has grown larger that they can accommodate and I believe the patient care is suffering because of it.

Again, thank you all so so much!!!

Edna

ps... you don't realize how much you love them until something like this happens.

>>>>...The Vet gave him a shot of vitamin K as a precautionary as the bruise may be bleeding through the skin from rat poison.

the vitamin K is going to help with blood clotting issues which could be related to a lot of differnt things. Did they do an ultra sound? And was the stomach/abdomen swollen?
Instead of me writing a bunch of stuff check out the link below. Disc pain can be horrible but the bruising on the belly makes me think it possibly may be something else

Here is a link that might be useful: possible reason for belly brusing

RE: so frustrated with the vet!!!!

I dont know but it sounds like the glands beside his anal is cloged , my dog did the same thing when hers were but my vet knew what to do hope i helped

RE: so frustrated with the vet!!!!

That is scary stuff, Cindyxeus. I hope it's not that. They found the bruise when they shaved his belly to do an ultrasound. Now I'm scratching my head with concern. I just checked and the bruise is completely gone. The vet did say his spleen was a little enlarged and yes his belly was swollen. He's fat too. I will call them and ask if it's possible he has that disease.

They checked his anal glands and they are okay.

The vet did check him head to toe. They ran every test available. So far he's doing really good and no more episodes ... knock on wood.

RE: so frustrated with the vet!!!!

todance... I hate sending scary stuff but just remember there were 2 sides of that link, one a disease process, and the other a toxin or trauma incident. Being your dog is doing well and your vet did all the right tests I wouldn't worry about the disease process kind unless you have another incident.

RE: so frustrated with the vet!!!!

Where is Dr. House when we need him?

 o
RE: so frustrated with the vet!!!!

Cindy, I'm grateful you attached the article. I love reading about things I've never heard of ... awareness is a good thing. What I read sounds exactly what he went through. Yes, he's doing great now ... it's been a week since the last incident. Maybe the VitK shot was a good thing, who knows? I guess we'll never know what happened.

I'm going to monitor his back closely as well.

Ruari thanks you all too.

he's adorable. You know, come to think of it certain mushrooms can cause coagulopathies, any chance he got into them?.

 o
RE: so frustrated with the vet!!!!

No, no mushrooms.
