Pee Problem

Here's the long version:

We got Tootsie in Nov of 2008. She came to us crate trained and other than a few accidents in the house, she acclimated herself to being house trained very well. In fact, after only a month or so with us, she would go to the rear door and let us know she needed to go out by giving us a little bark.

All was well for about 6 months. Then in late May/early June she peed in our bed (she sleeps with us) when we went to sleep. Since then she has peed at least two times in her day bed and another time in ours. Last night she was offered to go out at 2:45 am, she just stared at the open door and did not go out. At 3:02 am, she jumped out of our bed and I took her outside, she went out to the top of the rear steps and did not pee and went back in the house. At 3:09 am, when we had gone to bed, the pee did flow. She was banished to the crate after we changed the bedding. This was roughly the same behavior back in May/June.

Being that Toots had come to us crate trained and looked like she got house broken in no time at all, we are unsure as to how to correct this problem now. ESpecially since DH just checked her crate bedding and it looks like she peed in there as well.

Lately, she has also taken to going to the rear door and barking, but when it's opened for her to go out she just stands there uninterested in going out. She may be barking at a light or leaf movement in the yard, we can't know for sure. It is also the rainy season down here in Miami and she is not one to like going out when it's rainy or wet. So, perhaps she is holding it too long (just conjecture) or being stubborn (who'd have thought a bully would be stubborn).

All else seems well with her - she is not on any meds and does not seems to be drinking any more than usual. Do any of you limit your dogs water availability after a certain hour? Would that even be suggested? We are fairly certain that this is a behavioral problem not medical. She seems to be fine medically, she is not peeing excessively, just in the wrong place.

Any insight or help would be greatly welcomed.

RE: Pee Problem

How old is Tootsie? I once had a female puppy who just couldn't hold her urine until she was over a year old. Kind of like her bladder hadn't grown big enough. Good luck.

RE: Pee Problem

Has she been spayed?

Has there been a new source of stress or anxiety in her life?
new (human or other!)baby
new roommate/grown child moved back home
moved from one house to a new one

I once had a precious Rag Doll mix cat who wet her britches every time we moved the furniture.

finally figured it out, furniture stayed rooted in one spot til she passed away.

RE: Pee Problem

Don't give her the option of going out....TAKE her outside and wait until she pees.

Our dog will run out, do one job and forget the other if we allowed it. One of us always walks out with him and give the command for each 'business'. Then we go back in.
Teach your dog to 'do her business' or 'go tinkle' (my commands) on verbal command and life will be easier.

RE: Pee Problem

My first thought would be spay incontinence, but I do not know if she has been spayed. Is she awake when she pees or do you really know? A U/A at the Vet would also be a good idea.

Good luck,
Linda

Tootsie is over a year old. Shes actually one year and 7 months. She is spayed but she has been spayed since November. As for the anxiety it has been thundering alot, but she seems to be fine with it unless its really loud. We did leave her in June for about 9 days while we went on vacation. She stayed at a friends house who treated her very well. She is awake when she pees, no one new is our home, just DH and myself. I really think its just that she does not want to go out in the rain. My old bully hated the rain also, but she did not go pee in the house. The weird thing is that she has peed on the bed with us sleeping in it. I can't think of anything that would be stressing her out. She has not been getting her exercise outside because of all the rain. But I would expect that to make her energetic, not pee in her beds. She has peed in all three of her beds.

RE: Pee Problem

When my border collie gets nervous from the bad weather I have to take her out to pee or else she'll hold it till she pops.

I'd have the dog checked for a kidney or bladder infection first off and then if she checks out, I'd restart the crate training.

If she had any accidents while staying with the friend she may now think it's OK to do it in the house.

Let me make you laugh. I use to have a little chi who hated to walk in the grass. So she'd go in the yard, squat, pretend to go real quick, then come back in the house to pee. I just started taking her out and not letting her come in till she did her business and soon she was retrained. I'd praise her like crazy the minute she did her business. Praise her when she's done her business, even give her a treat. This good experience helps to enforce what you're trying to teach.

I'd keep her in her crate till she seems to have the idea down to a science.

RE: Pee Problem

It sounds like nothing has happened to upset her or make her mad at you, so I'd get the vet to check.

It might be a low-grade kidney or bladder infection that's not "hot" enough to make her run a fever.

My mother used to have a beautiful tortoiseshell & white cat who started peeing on the mop!

My mother thought it was kind of funny...
til Topaz started peeing in the bathtub!

turned out to be a low-grade infection, easily cured with anti-biotics.

I wish you all the best.

I ditto what sylvia says. It's time for an exam. Peeing in unusual places when the dog has been trained and good about it can be a symptom of either a physical or emotional problem. You have to rule out the physical problem first.

RE: Pee Problem

I think she needs to re trained. I really think shes peeing in the house because its too wet outside. I live in Florida and its rainy season. Everyday for two weeks it has been thunderstorms. And as she is peeing in the house sometimes right after going out....I think it is the training problem. But if she continues we will be taking her to the vet. Either way we are seeing the vet on the 19th. She does not like to get her feet wet. To the point where she will bark to go outside, see the rain and put the brakes on.

RE: Pee Problem

Sounds to me like this dog needs to be on a schedule. Instead of waiting for a dog to tell you it needs to go out (which is wonderful) you might want to start leash walking your dog at least 3 times a day. I dont know how big the dog is, but a good half an hour walk in the morning, one in the aternoon, and one in the evening before you all eat, then one quickie before bedtime would solve everything and leash walking is a great training tool. Not only does it stimulate your dogs bowels, keeps em from getting fat and unhealthy and it adds new scents and smells and opportunities for social interaction as well. Good luck

RE: Pee Problem

mazer walks sounds like a good idea...won't work where I live. I am in South Florida and my dog is an english bulldog. It is too hot and humid for her to be outside. Especially not three times a day. In the winter I used to walk her and she would still have problem breathing just going around the block. She is on kind of a schedule. She goes outside as soon as she wakes up, then again after she eats if she didn't go before. Then once again in the middle of the day. At night when she eats and then once more before bed. She is spoiled because I work from home and hubby is retired. So we never put her on a fixed schedule. Whenever she wanted to go we would take her.

Also walking in the neighborhood has her spooked a bit. None of the other dogs around here are very well trained and when she would walk every block they would start barking at us. She hates it. She even started giving us problems to just get her down the block. We had to get her a martingale collar to make her walk. Oh and she has been to the vet recently and has no problems, her weight is perfect at 46 lbs. She is just an english bull living in florida :-) I bought her a little basketball and we go out and play but only for a few minutes until she gets too hot.

RE: Pee Problem

Sounds like she needs some leash training. How do you know she is getting too hot or having trouble breathing? Bulldogs can be noisy breathers but it doesn't mean they're in pain or having trouble. In fact they are quite tough and enjoy a good amount of exercise. A well trained dog will walk with you even with other dogs barking and distracting her. You're probably projecting a lot of you own anxiety onto the dog during these walks.

RE: Pee Problem

My Bulldog (this is my second one, so I do have some experience), breathes well, she is not even a snorer. I can tell she is getting overheated because of the panting. In the winter I insisted on the walks, she had started stopping...meaning I would walk her and by the time we got to the end of my house she would put on the brakes, (sit down and refuse to move), at that point we had a harness on her because I was afraid of slipping out of a regular leash. I have since gotten her the martingale collar so now she walks, but I have to force her. With the heat down here right now she just can't do it. I had trained her not go pee on our walks though. She would go pee and poop in my yard and then we would go for her walks. The problem I see is with all the rain we've been having the grass is wet and is growing very quickly. She does not like the grass touching her behind. She is a weird dog I know. But you should see her trying to get away from the grass. She does however enjoy eating it every once in awhile.
