| My cat, Fred, (discussed in the Feline Asthma thread) is having issues. An X-ray taken a couple of months ago showed that she had white spots on the lungs -- the vet said it could be asthma or lung cancer. We chose to treat it as asthma (forgoing a biopsy, because it would be very traumatic, expensive, and if it did turn out to be lung cancer, there isn't much that could have been done for her). She's been on prednisolone for the past couple of months, and it did seem to help her...she was eating well, and relatively active. Her activity level has slowly been decreasing, but she was still interacting with us, begging for food, and occasionally fighting with our other cat. She's lost a little weight, but not as much as I had thought (just a couple of ounces).
Then, over this past weekend, there was a dramatic change -- she stopped eating, she's interacting with us much less than she used to, and she's been drooling like crazy. She basically just lies around, and has drool coming out of her mouth. So we took her to the vet, and they did X-rays and a blood panel. The X-rays showed that her lungs maybe looked a little worse, but that was it -- no huge tumors or anything that shouted "Here's the problem." I just called the vet's office, and had them tell me the lab results -- she showed as a little bit anemic, but nothing else was abnormal. When we took her in yesterday, the vet also put her under anesthesia and examined her mouth and throat closely, on the theory that it might be an oral problem -- she found nothing. So...what do we do at this point? She'll only eat a tiny bit (with coaxing), she's hardly interacting with us -- if we go up and pet her, she may purr, but most of the time she just sits there and looks sad. And then there's the drooling thing. No idea what that is about. She seems to be in pain, if you ask me -- sitting stiffly most of the time, angry eyes, moving stiffly, etc. I'm going to talk to my vet in more detail later today, so if anyone has run into something like this, I'd appreciate any insight you might have. One of my biggest concerns right now is that we're about to leave on a week's trip on Saturday -- family obligations that we can't get out of. My biggest concern right now is poor Fred, and having us be gone while she is sick. We can board her with the vet so she'd get great care if something were to happen, but what if she dies while we're gone? It seems so horrible. But I don't know at this point if she's "far gone" enough to put her to sleep. I just want to do what's best for her. Any advice greatly appreciated. |

| Sorry about your kitty. Don't take the following as 100% accurate (there are always exceptions), but on people, white spots on the lungs are of concern. If they have like a water spot appearance, as though you dropped a spot of water on the counter (meaning like a sunburst- a dot with jagged edges) it's usually cancer, or other lung desease. Maybe its different with cats. Prednisone masks a lot of problems. Of course it heals some things quickly IF they are treatable. Otherwise, Prednisone can speed up growths, or compromise the immune system. I had that with my dog. Don't mean to scare you because I really don't know about your kitty, but is there a cat scan (the xray) or something they can do to get a better diagnosis, so you know what you're dealing with? Good luck and let us know how you make out with your kitty. |

| You are probably correct that she is in pain. Can you talk to the vet about adding pain meds and appetite stimulants so that she might be more comfortable by the time you need to leave on your trip? I agree she would get good care at your vets, but most kitties will do much better at home with someone coming in a few times a day to feed and check, and the stay at the vets will likely stress her further. |

| Much as I would love to leave her at home, there's no way our cat sitter would be able to get the medication(s) into her. Fred's a fighter ;) She'll scratch, claw, or bite anyone (other than us) that even approaches her (we always have to scream "Don't touch her!" as people approach her with outstretched hand in our house. She's vicious) -- the vet can handle her, because they deal with crabby kitties all the time, but that's too much to ask of our cat sitter. I will talk to the vet about an appetite stimulant and pain meds tomorrow. |

| I am not Meghane (I know you were waiting for her to answer), but will try to help nevertheless. I am very sorry that Fred is going thorough this set back. Prednisolone on a long-term basis does cause side-effects (suppresses immune system) and has bad interactions with other drugs such as NSAIDS. Maybe your vet can wean Fred out of Prednisolone slowly. Be careful with pain meds. As I mentioned in your previous thread, those white 'spots' on her lungs may indicate metastasized cancer (from somewhere else)as you are well aware of. At any rate, I just hope she perks up before you leave or you may not have any peace of mind. Boarding her at the vet's would be best in her current condition, but ...I could not leave her! What a hard decision! My very best to your lady, Anne-Marie |

| Rivkar, What an awful dilemma. If your vet could give you any type of diagnoses, I'm sure you could make a decision. I also have to board my asthma kitty at the vet since no one can pill her, and it puts me at ease thats she's there. She goes on prednisone every spring until the first snow. Her lungs have shown the dark shaded area like Ann Marie said, but never white spots. She also gains weight from the prednisone. (hopefully your kitty is not on the Nutro food!) The drooling sounds like she's trying to avoid swallowing. I'm sure you know all this but I just want to say good luck to you, and whatever decision you make will be the right one.

| I think I'd go for a 2nd opinion before I did anything else. I wish you all the best. |

| I don't know what to advise but I will say I have had that dilemma quite a few times with my CRF cat who is no longer with us. I had to travel for work and over the last months I was really afraid he might die while I was gone. One night before I had to leave town he had a seizure - I hated to leave him. I had pet sitter that came three times a day and could reach me if needed. It was really stressful though. Sometimes I was planning in my mind when I'd take him in to be put to sleep before my next trip. But then I'd decide it wasn't time yet. Fortunately his time came when I was home - bad deal but I was so glad I was home to be with him. It's such a tough situation - I feel for you. |

| Just wanted to give an update on my cat Fred -- we ended up boarding her with the vet while we were gone on our trip. When we picked her up after we got home, it was obvious that things weren't so great with her -- she was obviously in a good deal of pain, not eating, etc. We spent the next day hugging her and crying a lot -- and then she had some sort of seizure/stroke -- was unable to use her left side to walk, and lay there crying pitifully. We realized it was time to put her to sleep, which we did a couple of days ago. The house and our hearts feel very empty without her. |

| Oh Rivkadr, I'm so sorry about Fred. It's absolutely awful to loose a pet. Remember all the happy times and love you gave her. There was nothing more you could do. I'm so sorry. |

| I'm sorry. I'm glad you got to say goodbye to Fred. Maybe she waited for you. |
