| We just got a 6 month old kitten.
The previous owner said it had kitten shots and 2 worming treatments when they got him, but had no papers to prove it. We want to get him fixed at one of the rescue places, but she said he need a record of his shots first. Can someone tell me what shots he needs and what he will need in the future. |

| I am sure one of our resident vets/techs will reply, but I can tell you that my adult cats get vaccinated every 3 years for distemper and every year for rabies (Purevax. sp?). Kittens first shots are spaced out over a period of weeks (months?). Rabies shots are required where we live, and having had a bat in the house once, a wise thing to do. We do the distemper shots because it is an airborne disease. I feel better knowing they are protected for those times when they need to spend part of the day in a kennel/cage at the vet's office (e.g. following a teeth cleaning or surgery). If a cat in a nearby cage has distemper and sneezes..... Also, I volunteer at an animal shelter, so don't want to bring that home and expose them without having them protected against it. Since our cats are indoor only, we skip vaccinations against FeLV since they must have direct contact (a bite for ex) to contract it. We lost an older cat to fibrosarcoma, which is suspected to be a vaccine associated cancer, after yrs of giving her the leukemia vaccine, so avoid having it administered to our current cats. HTH. |

| Here is a article that might help you. CAT VACCINATION SCHEDULE Distemper combination vaccine* Begin as early as 6 weeks of age and repeat every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks of age. Booster at 1 year after completion of initial series, then no more frequently than every 3 years. Feline Rabies *Distemper combination vaccine includes panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis and calicivirus. Consider inclusion of Chlamydophilia for cats at risk of exposure. |
