Meyer lemons - how many is too many?
Comments (37)I have had a Meyer lemon for about two years- I’m guessing it was 2-3 years when I got it. It is grafted into an unknown rootstock. I bought it from my tree guy at the farmers market. Right now it is very healthy. It is about five foot tall and has about 40 grape sized lemons on it. It is still trying to bloom again and has a few babies as well. It dropped at least half of its baby fruits on its own. It is in a large terra-cotta pot. My question is this.... if I don’t want my tree to grow any more, should I forego thinning and just let all of the lemons mature? Does a tree drop larger than grape sized fruit? It is outdoors and gets lots of sun here in 7b. Also- I seem to have some tiny white flies in the dirt around the base and some spiders spinning webs to catch some random bugs that are on it. I’m not a huge fan of insecticidal soap. Any other suggestions for me. My first two summers with this tree were disappointing. One year I had about 5 good sized lemons and huge storm blew the tree over and knocked odd most of them, and last year I ended up with one lemon that refused to ripped for a year. It was not tasty....See MoreHow Many Decorative Mirrors Are Too Many?
Comments (45)I tend to choose mirrors over art. I like the way they play with light in our little cottage and reflect the outside views. I can count art on one hand, but I can't the mirrors! Mustang, your wall reminds me of something we did in our daughter's room. I started with them different finishes, but I ended up painting them all the same shade of white. It bounced the light beautifully. (BTW, I love looking at pics but am scared to death when it comes to sharing. This has always been our "we'll only be here awhile" house, so I've decorated with whatever I can find for pennies instead of what I want. Read: hodgepodge!) In our living room I've actually lost track of how many different mirrors we've used for a little while then moved. That room has great morning light, and I just can't help but fill it with mirrors. This was taken before everything was in the room, but......See MoreHow many cats is too many for one household?
Comments (23)Five was way way too many. This was because two cats were dumped off at me when I already had three. The owners were friends who couldn't move into their new housing with their cats (they were foreclosed out of their house and had to move to an apartment that would work for their autistic daughter - but alas allowed no pets). I wanted to move the cats to a no-kill shelter, but there was a three plus month waiting list. So, I kept them. It was way too many because the first three and the second two did not REMOTELY get along. Ever. I tried everything. Okay, Serenity (my oldest cat at nearly 17.5 years) would, and still does, get along with everyone -- but the other four??? Naw. I had to keep some in the basement, some upstairs. We all hated this. At the moment, I have two cats. Three would be fine at a maximum, but they all have to at least tolerate each other!!!!...See MoreToo many cats on Spicebush?
Comments (3)They'll both be defoliated, and the caterpillars still won't get enough to eat, even if the leaves are big, like they might be in the shade. Do you know where some sassafras grows in your area? They use sassafras here, spicebush isn't native (well, except a rare type that grows in a few bogs) and when I feed sassafras to the caterpillars that I've found on my one little spicebush, they don't seem to know the difference. The two plants are closely related, and the chemical makeup of the leaves must be identical or nearly so. If you want to raise your caterpillars yourself, you could just feed them (washed) sassafras leaves from wild trees. Or, you could cut off the leaf the cats are on and attach it with a clothes pin to a sassafras tree. You could leave one caterpillar on one of the spicebushes. One caterpillar probably won't damage the bushes too much. Of course, if you leave any of them to raise itself, there's a strong possibility they'll be eaten by predators or used by a parasitic wasp. That's why I raise caterpillars myself. Good luck! Sherry...See Morespiritual_gardner
