Comments (5)Thank you, Mary. How thoughtful of you do put this quote up. It's a wonderful quote and so true. I don't think Scoop ever had a day she didn't like :) Or a meal she turned her nose up at, a trip in the car she didn't think was heaven. Never met a stick she didn't think was the perfect for retrieving and never met a body of water she thought was less than perfect for plunging into for a good swim. If it was possible to ask Scoop what she thought the best thing about life? She would answer "all of it."...See MoreThe Dog Whisperer
Comments (4)Ain't that the truth Brenda! I love cats, but would never say I understood them. I mean, I've learned alot about them, but really KNOW what they're thinking? lol! That's what makes them such wonderful creatures! Glad to hear about your success Jenny! Sounds like Apache needed someone to take Grieco's place in his world. I have had so many people say they like the show (I don't get get cable here). I'll have to make an effort to get someone to record it for me. Thanks! My golden retriever 'Emma' has some issues with 'Kate' my yellow lab. When there's too much action around - company, excited dogs, etc - Emma will attack Kate in a split second, and Kate now fights back. Nothing like a dog fight to add to an evening with friends! My current technique is separating the dogs (baby gate) until the excitement has passed (this works), but I would like to learn how to resolve this. I don't think I can ever learn enough about behavior and ways to modify it, so while remembering that ALL pets are individuals, I'm always willing to listen to someone with some experience and success....See MoreMe or the Dog TV show
Comments (40)The biggest problem many people have with understanding dogs is they simply insist on maintaining dogs have human characteristics. They actually believe dogs have some of the same atributes and skills that humans have. Dogs can learn amazing things. Now and then there arises an amazing dog---my son/DIL had one of those amazing dogs. He would sit and listen to you explain something, nodding at correct maments and wagging his tail appropriately. People swore he could understand English. Not so, he simply picked up on facial movements and body cues----what was said had not impact---I could speak gibberish and he responded the same way. Dogs react to very sublte body movements/voice inflections/posture---because their instinct tells them to do that with other dogs---that is their basic communication. Dogs simply have learned to transfer the same basic signs fom dogs to humans. I raised/trained horses for 20 years---I have heard stories of how horses could do amazing things---think like people/etc. Horses could learn---but they could not reason. I believe dogs can be changed much faster than most other domesticated animals---breed standards have changed for some in thirty years. That applies to cognative abilities as well. The average stray/loose dog today does often look both ways when crossing a street. That is not reasoning---it is selective instinct. Counrty dogs do not do that. Did you know city squirrels run across an open area differently than country squirrels? City squirrels run a more straight line---while country cousins run zig zag lines. Reason---selective breeding instincts---the squirrels in the city do not have hawks/foxes as preditors---requiring a zig zag path to evade capture. The straight runners do not get hit by cars as much. The current issue of National Geographic has an article about Darwins discoveries and the things scientists have learned about natural selection since his theory was published....See MoreNew Puppy
Comments (10)Thanks! Everyone wants to hold her from family and friends to strangers in the pet store, lol. Peanut is great fun! She's trying to engage the cats to play now that my brother reclaimed his dog. Dustin seems like he's interested, he made the stalking position and butt-wiggle he uses when he plays with Muffin and he was kinda swatting at her from a chair but I supervise all interactions to make sure its a positive experience for all. I'm not worried because the cats haven't stalked her or look at her like the birds or mice they see and when I play with my cats, even if I hand-wrestle a lil bit they never scratch me. Actually I'm surprised because with my first cat and even with ones I come into contact with I'd always have the odd scratch here and there but I have one now and not only can not remember where/how I got it but I can't remember the last scratch I got from them. If I do feel their claws a bit its because they need a trimming. I was kinda worried they'd be jealous since they had all my attention until now but I'm making a point to not treat them any different and give lots of love, play and scratches. Dustin even slept on the bed with me last night (Muffin never sleeps on the bed; she was a barn cat so she her lil spots she likes to nap in). I have to educate my mom not to treat Peanut like a baby but I can say that if Peanut was a Mastiff mom would still baby her. She said she's leaving the training and discipline to me but she'll try to help if she remembers. I'm more concerned about dad rough-housing with her. He used to play this rough style with his sheppards and there wasn't a problem but now she's nipping at my fingers and toes and I want her to know she can't play that way with everyone and when I say playtime is over, then its over. But I'll go gentle and keep reading up to raise her as best I can....See Morelilod
