What would you do?

I went to the bank today and in the corner from the overhang and the walls the builder left cracks that are about 2 inches high and a couple inches deep. It creates the perfect nesting space for little birds like sparrows. The renters went and put up chicken wire so now there are nests with baby birds caught inside this small space. I asked a couple of the businesses if they have the renters number and got "No, because we are chains, blah blah, just an employee" so I couldn't get a number. Now what? The birds are still being fed by their mother so they aren't starving - yet. Ugh, I'm not even a bird person but feel bad.

What would happen if you removed the chicken wire? If you don't know who put it up they wouldn't know who took it down.

It is a stripmall so I am assuming the rental agency put it up. You would need a ladder to get up to remove it and it probably is set up in sections of 100 ft. I called the Wild Bird Centre and they say since they aren't protected species as they are probably sparrows there is nothing they can do and could be looked upon as vandalism is anyone else attempts to remove it. Plus I am 8 months pregnant and not really up to climbing the ladder right now plus my phobia of heights - a bad combo. I am telling myself "that's just the way it is, I guess".

Oh boy ... that's definitely a loaded question, but thank heavens my husband doesn't read these forums! I'd had it all planned out (the shed, that is), but it was not cost effective. Oh all right - $2000.00 IS a bit ridiculous, I suppose. We modified the design and took a few shortcuts to significantly drop the cost, got a few things from friends ("free" works for me!), and ended up w/ a really cool shed, inside & out. It's large enough to hold all of my garden tools/accessories/books/etc. Plenty of space to move around, lots of counter space for various tasks ... I actually spend quite a bit of time out there on the weekends, even in cold temps (propane heater). BUT ... the number one thing that I would do different is the roof. While corrugated tin LOOKS absolutely fantastic, rustic, etc., it doesn't hold heat worth a darn! Of course, I can't possibly say anything about it at this point - the shed is built, and I'M the idiot that fell in love w/ the overall look of a tin roof! *heavy sigh* Guess I shot myself in the foot, so to speak!

After seeing your latest pics, ans re-reading your OP - I would say the following: 1. You PURCHASED the piece of stone for the Island - it was your property 2. THEY suggested that you wait on the island 2 1/2 years ago, and on THEIR insistance - took responsibility for the piece (still YOUR property) 3. What they are trying to give you as the island made from "your piece" (if the small sample in the pics is what the stone SHOULD look like...) does NOT match with the sample. Based on these three criteria - I would say you have a case, and that your Fabricator now has the responsibility to "deliver" - if he can't to your satisfaction, you'll need to work out fair compensation for loss and de-fault of contract. Hopefully it won't go there - I'm hoping that your guy will make things right and give you what you feel is acceptable... TO YOU !!!! I would hope that your Fabricator can find a stone with waaay more of a match to the sample, and then everyone wins. My guess is - they lost track of your "piece" AND either broke it or fabbed it (the original) for something else, or they just lost track of it and it's still there - burried in their scrap pile.... I work with shops all over the world in my business, and I cant tell you how many other fabricators are in this general group....... EVERYBODY makes mistakes now and then !!! LOL - But..... you gotta hols your guy's feet to the fire and have him fab up an island that YOU will be happy with. I don't have real compost but I do have leaf mulch that has really broken down over the couple of years it has been in a windrow out in my back yard. The town brought me 8 large trucks ( approximately 200 - 250 cubic yards) that had been vacuumed out of the gutters. I use it as mulch every time I plant something new in my gardens about 6-8" deep and my soil is easy to plant into now and the weeds are few and far between and easy to pull because they are only rooted in loose mulch. I like it so much that I'll probably e-mail the Superintendent of Public Works about November and ask for about 5 more truckloads to replace what I've used. I almost feel guilty about how easy it is.

On the plus side, your present layout of kitchen appliances is in a good working order (fridge, sink, prep space range) so you may be able to save $ by not moving any of those items or not moving them much. While I don't mind the older cabinets (I have an older, vintage style myself), there are not that many of them, and it may be within your budget to replace them. Without measurements, my thought would be a peninsula off the wall between the windows to increase counter space or possibly a small, movable island. I have the small island but it just fits and your space looks a tad smaller. There might not be room for a peninsula - why measurements would be helpful. You are correct that the style clash is not helping:) Realistically, a table that is the only eating area and part of the kitchen will probably need to be less formally dressed. If a peninsula wide enough to hold a couple of eating spaces fits, smaller meals and snacks could happen there, and then the dining table can be a bit formal. I think if you change out the cabinets, counters and backsplash to a less country style, you and your husband can find a style that is a better mix of your taste. If this was my space I would also consider at some point putting the same flooring throughout - for me that would be an ordinary solid hardwood.

Its pretty inhumane to trap live birds that way. I would probably go into the store closest to the trapped birds, point out the situation to them. Have them contact the building manager. Each business in the strip mall has to have a contact number for the building manager.... I would ask them to remove the screen just until the birds fledge from the nest....

I would also let the press know in some way. LOTS of people would be outraged by this and it would be bad advertising for the strip mall. Let the owner know that you plan on creating some waves if the wire isn't taken down.
If you stand up for this, you will have that good feeling that will go with you the rest of your life. And vice versa.

I have a bad feeling from something very small, like this, that I could have done 20 years ago but it was too inconvenient. I don't dwell on it, of course, but I do regret not doing the right thing.

I ended up calling The Humane Society, which they called back today, so I went down to see if the birds were still trapped as they said they may just look trapped. I started to second guess myself, went and someone cut a section for them to go when ready. I did bring it to the stores attention so it probably did bother them enough. I did make sure there no others and it turns out not all the stores have the chicken wire. Weird, I guess it's an individual stores choice. Thanks for the the input anyways. Yes, I am also a dweller so I'm glad it's done with.
