My cat is peeing everywhere, never in a box

My cat is nearing 15, she has always had a problem urinating on things from time to time, but now it's ALL the time and she also poops outside of the box. I have taken her to the vet several times before trying steroids and different medications but nothing has worked. She also has blood in her stool but she has been confined to a bathroom for a month because I have a 3year old and a brand new baby. I don't know what to do and I am thinking of putting her down even though this breaks my heart. HELP!!!

All I have are questions for you, which answers can help me and others to help you figure out what's happening. Here goes:

What tests has the vet performed? What is the vet looking for? What does the vet say that the problem is, based on tests performed? What does the vet say about the blood in her stool? When was the last time she went to the vet? Did the complete refusal to use the litterpan start before or after you shut her in the bathroom? Isn't it possible that either the toddler is bothering her (perfectly normal toddler activity, with supervision and intervention to protect the cat from unwelcome attention it's okay), or that she's reacting to the new baby's arrival? What are you using to clean the soiled places? have you recently changed her routine, her litter, her litterpan location?

She's 15 years old, so some physical things are bound to have changed and she may be quite uncomfortable. It could be a simple fix, like changing to a flat pan that's easier to get into and out of.

Whew. Lot of questions! If it helps at all, I have a cat who's but 11 who has begun to poo in one particular spot nearly every day. She's clear of any physiological problems except some stiffening of the old joints. I tried various things to make her littering easier but still find the poo a little too often. She was always fastidious, too. If that's the only problem I have with her I consider myself lucky. She's a sweet, gentle, daft cat but that pooing drives me batty. You're not alone. There are also medications (clomipramine, amitryptylline) to help kitty while you work out the problem. I had another cat on clomipramine for the same issue. In under three months I was able to wean her off the med. She hasn't poo'd inappropriately since. A little calm retraining works nicely if the cat's not upset. However, it's up to the vet to decide if she needs drug therapy.

if your cat is squatting to urinate, it is most likely due to bladder pain and not a 'bad habit' or 'bad' behavior. Cats that urinate due to anxiety or some other stressor tend to spray against vertical surfaces, such as walls or furniture (even female cats will do this). But squatting to pee, particularly if he persists despite your trying to actively scare him from doing it, are almost always signs of suffering from bladder discomfort. So you need to be taking him in ASAP to be sure he is indeed able to empty his bladder completely. As someone already said, blocked cats are emergencies- can be fatal if not attended to right away. Not sure what 'special diet' you are giving your cat now, but you can never go wrong with a fish-free canned food, and would recommend switch to that ASAP as well. If you are feeding a special dry, try to switch again to the same diet, but in canned form. I have been treating blocked cats and cats with painful bladders for over 20 years and nothing works better prevention-wise than canned food (and no fish if the urine shows any signs of struvite crystals). However UTIs (true bladder infections) are extremely rare in young cats (only seen maybe 4 in 20 years in otherwise healthy cats under the age of 10) compared to maybe 500 cases of FIC (feline inflammatory cystitis- a non infectious cause of bladder pain and bloody urine). So hopefully your vet will not just put your cat on antibiotics and hope that takes care of the problem.

Has he been checked for crystals? Infections are sort of scarce (I think 3-5% of cats presenting urinary issues) but inflammation and/or crystals are more common. Stress is a big player in cystitis so the move could have triggered this. homebodymom mentioned that a previous cat may have sprayed there so that would add to stress. Feliway may help with the stress, I have heard how great it is but have had no luck with it myself. I'd still try it, it's just that my cats are weird and ornery about the easy remedies. If it's stress-related, then suggestions include the Feliway (both plug-in and spray) increased entertainment, somehow increase his feeling of security (peeing on your bed can be a technique stating that "this human is MINE"). You will have to clean the pee spots so that the cat cannot smell his urine. We can clean so WE don't smell it, but the cat will nose out traces that elude us. Enzymatic cleansers formulated for this are easily available. It really sounds like stress to me but I am not a doctor. Working with stress and other psychological issues in cats is not easy but is definitely possible. Good luck and please follow up.

It could be a dominance thing. It could be an intimidation thing if Mika doesn't want to risk being cornered in a litterbox by Midnight. It could be a stress thing if Mika doesn't appreciate having Midnight in her territory. It could be an illness thing if Mika has developed a urinary tract infection, which can result from stress. Why would you even consider getting rid of Mika when you caused this problem by bringing Midnight into the household? Mika has to pay for your mistake? Take Mika to the vet to check for UTI and/or urinary crystals. Get another litterbox. Place the litterboxes in different rooms, NOT in corners where Mika may feel trapped if she tries to use one. Try both covered and open boxes. Buy some Feliway or Comfort Zone to use in your home to help calm your cats and hopefully help alleviate the inappropriate urination. Buy some Rescue Remedy and give it to Mika to help relieve her stress. Buy some Cat Attract and use it in your litterboxes. Give Mika LOTS of extra loving attention away from Midnight so that she knows she is not being displaced. Do NOT allow Midnight to intimidate or harrass her in any way. If the previous suggestions don't resolve the problem, you may want to discuss the possibility of putting Mika on an anti-anxiety drug as a last resort. Mika needs your love, reassurance, understanding, and patience. She is responding the way a cat under stress responds. It's your responsibility to do everything possible to alleviate her stress, and "getting rid of her" isn't the answer. Laurie

Yes, her cat was healthy otherwise...her vet had performed numerous tests and recommended many different things. That is when I insisted she at least call my vet. He tries very hard to not complicate problems with unnecessary treatments. The Depo shot was simply used as a counter measure against the existing male hormones... I should mention that her cat rarely lifted the tail and sprayed, he would squat pee on her child's doll clothes, plastic bags, company's open suitcases (aak!!), etc... The positive results of the Depo were almost immediate, but her cat was old...she was glad to have a few months of peace with him before he finally passed away.
