WWYD-sensitive subject - deciding when to put cat to sleep.
Comments (51)I'm so sorry for the grief and stress you've felt throughout this time. You've done a kindness -don't forget that. It was difficult, but you did it because you loved Keo and wanted her to stop hurting. I've had to do it a number of times, and it's always so incredibly difficult, and always followed by weeks of melancholy. But I've never regretted it. Right now I know of a kitty, about 17 years old, who weighs about 3 lbs., and is truly suffering every day from many ailments. Her owners believe they'll 'know' when the time is right to put her down, but to everyone else, it looks like the time is right here, right now, and we feel such sorrow and pity for this poor, frail, hurting kitty..... You did the right thing. I don't know whether you're familiar with this poem, or whether it will resonate with you, but I thought I'd pass it on... The Last Battle If it should be that I grow frail and weak And pain should keep me from my sleep, Then will you do what must be done, For this " the last battle" can't be won. You will be sad I understand, But don't let grief then stay your hand, For on this day, more than the rest, Your love and friendship must stand the test. We have had so many happy years, You wouldn't want me to suffer so. When the time comes, please, let me go. Take me to where to my needs they'll tend, Only, stay with me till the end And hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time you will agree It is a kindness you do to me. Although my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I have been saved. Don't grieve that it must be you Who has to decide this thing to do; We've been so close "we two" these years, Don't let your heart hold any tears. - Unknown...See MoreMy cat is peeing everywhere, never in a box
Comments (1)All I have are questions for you, which answers can help me and others to help you figure out what's happening. Here goes: What tests has the vet performed? What is the vet looking for? What does the vet say that the problem is, based on tests performed? What does the vet say about the blood in her stool? When was the last time she went to the vet? Did the complete refusal to use the litterpan start before or after you shut her in the bathroom? Isn't it possible that either the toddler is bothering her (perfectly normal toddler activity, with supervision and intervention to protect the cat from unwelcome attention it's okay), or that she's reacting to the new baby's arrival? What are you using to clean the soiled places? have you recently changed her routine, her litter, her litterpan location? She's 15 years old, so some physical things are bound to have changed and she may be quite uncomfortable. It could be a simple fix, like changing to a flat pan that's easier to get into and out of. Whew. Lot of questions! If it helps at all, I have a cat who's but 11 who has begun to poo in one particular spot nearly every day. She's clear of any physiological problems except some stiffening of the old joints. I tried various things to make her littering easier but still find the poo a little too often. She was always fastidious, too. If that's the only problem I have with her I consider myself lucky. She's a sweet, gentle, daft cat but that pooing drives me batty. You're not alone. There are also medications (clomipramine, amitryptylline) to help kitty while you work out the problem. I had another cat on clomipramine for the same issue. In under three months I was able to wean her off the med. She hasn't poo'd inappropriately since. A little calm retraining works nicely if the cat's not upset. However, it's up to the vet to decide if she needs drug therapy....See More13 year old Siamese peeing on bed/outside litter box
Comments (4)If you truly want to find her a new home, contact your local rescue groups. If she's healthy, a Siamese cat shouldn't have problems finding a new home. I don't think it's fair to even consider putting her down since she only reacting to the stress of another cat, new home & location, being locked in a basement and then locked in the bedroom. Plus, she probably doesn't see you as much as she used to. On top of all that, she now has the additional stress of your response to her accidents. If you really want to keep her and intend to move as soon as you find a place, then I'd suggest finding a pet boarding facility that houses only cats. My local Cat Clinic boards cats......and they each get a nice room with a large viewing window. I think it'll be less costly in the long run....See MoreCats suddenly peeing outside litter box sometimes- LONG!
Comments (6)Well I can tell you from experience the cats are probably mad about the puppy. But I'm not sure how to fix it! My experience was I brought home a new baby! A real newborn baby. And my cat of 12 years threw a fit. He too started peeing everywhere that I cared about. He would do it in my favorite seat, on top of my pillow, and even once on me and baby as I was feeding her! I would call a pet trainer. The ones at PetSmart comes to mind. Im not real sure how your gonna have to deal with it. For sure make sure the cats feel loved. I would spend extra time with them. Im not sure if you should go about punishing them when you catch them doing it, or reward for using the litter box. I think thats where the trainer could help you best. Goodluck!
