Allergic to cats but not dogs?
Comments (11)I am a person who has been tested for allergies. I am allergic to cat dander but not to dogs. I had to give away my kitten, thus no more ear infections, sore throats, or eye infections and finally landing in hospital. I am now the proud owner of a dog. I am a very happy camper now. Do not know the difference in cat dander or dog dander but there is a difference, as I have had my dog for awhile now and no problemos. When I had my kitten, I was sick constantly,(ALL THE TIME) thus my Dr. suggested I have some allergy tests done to find out what was going on with me, came back it was my kitty. I was in denial even after test came back until I ended up in hospital with an ear and throat infection so bad it set up a bacterial infection. I had to have my house professional cleaned twice before I could move back in, I was so sick from the kitten. I understand your daughter. I avoid cats and will not even go in a house where there is one....See MoreWhat advice to give to someone who has never owned a cat?
Comments (14)Stress the benefits of wet food -- too many people avoid it because of the expense and smell. An acquaintance of mine (never owned a cat before) just adopted two adorable kittens and had them declawed so they wouldn't "claw my face while I sleep." If you are going to encourage her not to declaw you had better help her learn to trim nails and advise her to get plenty of scratching surfaces for the cat. You wouldn't want the cat coming back because it scratched the couch since it had no appropriate place to scratch....See Moresince we're talking about cats
Comments (48)When I moved to a house on a well, without a water softener, all my kitties wanted to drink was the well water (would sit in sink & tub just waiting for drips). Because of the high iron content, I did not want them drinking it. So I tried bottled water, which they did not like, and decided that I did not want them drinking that because it was not chlorinated and would be sitting in their bowl for 24-hours, and knowing they dip their paws in the bowl after having those same paws in the litterbox. Final solution - fill gallon bottles of water at my sisters house, as she has chlorinated municipal tap water. They were OK with that water. Knowing how critical water is to kitties, I bought 2 different types of fountains; they never used them and were a PITA to clean. Also add water (~1-2 ounces daily) to canned food to promote adequate hydration, dilute urine and help prevent obesity/diabetes and FLUTD....See MoreAre you allergic to anything?
Comments (46)I grew up with asthma and eczema due to environmental allergies. Also have a serious allergy to peanuts, one of my first memories is refusing to eat a peanut butter sandwich because it gave me a tummy ache. Still have environmental allergies and peanut allergy and have added allergies to tree nuts, melons and avocado. If I eat a lot then it's bad, if I eat a trace then I have a mild stomach ache that lasts for weeks. It mimics hunger pangs so I eat and eat. Awful. Terribly allergic to cats but if I give the dogs a bath every few weeks I'm fine with them. Apparently I'm reacting to the pollens and such that get into their fur more than the dander as their licking annoys me but doesn't cause any problem. A couple times a kiss from a large dog has caused a reaction though. When I was commuting to college by bicycle I could ride through a mild asthma attack, that was wonderful. Sometimes I can walk through one nowadays. There's a Ukrainian physiologist who developed breathing patterns to correct the panicked pattern that asthmatics do, suspect that is what was going on when I rode or walked through a mild attack. It isn't supposed to work but it does for me....See Morejunebug1961
