Tell me about Leapfrog products.

My son just married a gal with a three year old daughter whom I just adore. She turned three in Sept. It has been a long time since I've been around little ones. I have shopped and purchased the starter LeapFrog program for her for Christmas. Now I am not sure that I should have bought the Leapfrog Adventure one. I really don't know enough about this product to make a sane decision. She seems to be a bright child wanting to learn new things all the time. I know that you can buy books to build on to this program. Should I take the starter one back and exchange it for a more advanced one? I'd appreciate help from someone who knows more about this product than I do/ Thanks for your help. Out of Date Grandma

My MIL bought a Leap pad for my daughter for Christmas too! She also turned three in Sept. My thoughts would be to stick with the one you have. I think my daughter is well above average compaired to other kids her age (what mother doesn't?) Anyway, I think for my DD, she needs to learn the basics of reading first. If she doesn't learn phonics first, she won't be very successsful at reading. She may pick up on it really quickly and be ready for the next level soon but I still think it's best to build a strong foundation first.

Poli, Thanks for the good advice. I think I will keep it and give it to her. Besides, I know that they plan to have more kids. She can always pass it down to a younger brother or sister when she "graduates" to the next level. Well, now I am finished with my Christmas shopping. Sure feels good. Happy Holidays to you, Anne

Donn, I'm one of those few NOT in the business. Like you, I just love flowers. I enjoy the peace I find working in my garden (when the weather is more temperate), and I especially enjoy arranging flowers. I do it for myself, for friends and school colleagues, as hostess gifts, and for competition. Last week I took a design into the nurses who give me my allergy shots. (I used a clean spaghetti sauce can, covered with foil for potted plants, purchased at the florist, and wet foam.) I belong to a garden club, though I can only attend one or two summer meetings because they have daytime meetings. (Most of them seem to be retired.) I've learned a great deal from those members at shows in the last five years, as they've helped me see weaknesses in my designs and showed me what's good. I'm doing better. Last month I won a blue ribbon for a crescent design at the state show, and the next week I took 15 entries to our local show. All won ribbons (though not automatic), and five won blues. One of those received the Designer's Choice ribbon for best of 4 classes. (OK--I didn't mean to brag, but it shows that anyone can learn how to design, given time, effort, and guidance.) We live on a grain farm and I have two curvy perennial beds, a hedge of peonies, a small terrace area next to the garage driveway, a raised triangle shade bed, and out back, a cutting garden about 50' x 14'. I grow a few veggies--some asparagus, 8 tomatoes, and 8 peppers, but the rest is flowers, grown in rows for easy harvest. Most are annuals, but some are glads, and this year I have 3 dahlias. The cutting garden is just really beginning, with 3 14' rows of zinnias, some snaps, annual baby's breath, and celosia blooming now. I'm still waiting for the larkspur in that garden, the Bells of Ireland, the cosmos, the asters, the glads, and the dahlias. I admire the discipline of market growers. If it's too hot, I stay inside, or limit my outdoor time to early morning. I thought I was going crazy creating and transporting 15 different designs for our local show. How little that is compared to what these growers do for every market, some twice weekly. I don't see myself ever going into business, as I don't want my hobby to become work. I visited Clink's (Cathy L.) cut-your-own garden last year. Wow! She's gracious, knowledgeable, and determined, and she had beautiful flowers (with better weather last year.) I lurk a lot on this site for all that I can learn from these growers. Thanks to all of you for sharing your knowledge.

kate- I actually do not have direct experience with boracare, but I know a little bit after working in environmental regulation for many years. I try to use as few pesticides as possible, but I have needed them a few times, and I've decided that my family would be better protected from unnecessary exposures if I did it myself. You just need to be informed and used the right protective gear. As far as your comments regarding mixing different products together, I would generally try to avoid that. Most of the time it would be ok, but, on rare occasion, you could also get an unanticipated reaction between chemicals in the mixing bottle which might be hazardous (toxic gas emission, etc.), or the mixing could diminish the effectiveness of one of the products. It would be better to do separate applications of different products unless you knew from the manufacturers that it was ok. And you might not need to be spraying in all the same locations for different pests, so you would be wasting product and possibly creating unnecessary exposures. That gets back to my point about making your own informed choices rather than having the exterminator come in and spray away.

I've had 2 Roombas in the past but they died too quickly for what I paid for them. Recently there was a deal recommended on tv for an off brand robot vac... I think I paid $89 for it. Can't think of the name. Anyhow, I hate it! Don't waste your money on a cheapie because this thing has no memory and it constantly goes in the same places and gets stuck. And then it just spins and keeps trying to move forward. I have to constantly check to see where it is because it doesn't beep if stuck. Last year I purchased a robot mop due to our late dog's health issues that caused her to leak lymphatic fluid all over. It's an iRobot Braava mop and it's wonderful on hard surfaces. It rarely gets stuck and if it does it will beep till you find it. It dry and wet mops and I love it. I wish it vacuumed!

Thank you so much everyone, thank you. I guess no point trying to grow it outside. At the moment I have the herb called 'Italian Oregano' Origanum majoricum. Although, the plant I bought just said 'Italian Oregano' and did not have the Latin name on the label. This herb looks, smells and tastes distinct from the Greek Oregano plant I have. I dont have any marjoram growing now side by side and cannot compare the two directly, Do you think Italian Oregano is kind of like marjoram? Could I substitute in a pinch? Thanks again.

I hope you got the two detailed websites I sent to you about Leapfrog (Please no one write me about them I have deleted them from my favorites now). I tired to put them on this forum but after putting all the information needed I was cut off.
So...I didn't try again, just sent the 2 website on hyperlinks to you. The second one showed lots of pictures and explained alot about the product. I know that can never be as good as hearing from someone who's child has used this product.

My son is 5 and my MIL got him a LeapPad. She got him 3 books. I don't see this as a toddler toy. We have lots of the LeapFrog products that ARE great for toddlers but I do not think this one is meant for the little ones.

My son knows his letter and sounds and is reading simple, predictable books. I can't imagine that a 3 year old would find this interesting at all. If they have books that are more toddler oriented (with songs, ABC's, numbers, etc.) it might be ok for a toddler. The way Zack got it, it is more geared toward a child that already knows his letters and sounds, and is beginning to read.

Just a note, I was reading by the time I entered Kindergarten, actually my ABC books by the time I was 4 (so I'm told anyway! lol). I think that was attributed to the information being presented to me. I certainly think it's an OK gift for a 3 year old if they're interested in learing more :)

My son got the Leapfrog book pad with three books for his third birthday (or third Christmas, can't remember, but they're two months apart). Anyway, he is now 4.5 and he doesn't really use them for the stories yet. HOWEVER, he does love the one that has extra things in the back like the U.S. map, musical instruments, the human body, etc. He can name about half of the U.S. states just by looking at a map now because of this book, not to mention various bones of the body and musical instruments.

So, just because they're not reading or using it yet to learn to read, doesn't mean there's no value to them. I'm sure she'll do just fine with it.

there are several levels of books from prereaders to chapter books. I think 3 1/2 and up would be a good age for the leap pad. My 4 yr DD is getting one for Christmas. She goes straight to the display at every store we go to and plays with it until I drag her away.

I LOVE Leapfrog products!! We have the Baby Tad soft electronic dolls, misc other toys--they are WONDERFUL! My littlest sister-w/learning disabilities uses the leap pad and all it's accessories with great success!
