Comments (10)I would like to have put up an 8' fence, but I couldn't get ahold of it locally and I didn't want to deal with such tall supports. I guess I could have made two levels of 4' fencing. But instead I got a 330' roll of 78" tall "game fencing" and supported in with 8' T-posts driven two feet into the ground. It seems to have worked pretty good. Although lately from time to time they were getting in. It turns out, I think, their coming in from the street side right by my house which I didn't think they'd do, and didn't fence off. They come in the morning and since I'm now working at home I have confronted them a couple of times. It was a doe and either another smaller doe or a large fawn. Both times they could not leap over the 78" game fence. Even with a full run up to the fence with no obstructions. Going full bore they still crashed into the fence trying to leap over, not fun to watch. I was surprised they couldn't do it. I think they're fat and happy from browsing home owners' gardens and orchards....See MoreHow can I keep the raccoons away from my apple tree?
Comments (9)I use wire fencing to keep critters away from certain plants. I collect throwaway rolls of wire fencing with a 2 x 4 inch grid. I like it a little rusty, because it's nearly invisible in the garden. I cut pieces, usually about 2 feet high, and encircle the plants to keep out critters like woodchucks. Woodchucks can dig under and climb over a fence that high, except that I cut the fencing so that pokey wire ends stick out of the top and bottom. They are very sharp, so nothing has tried to climb over it. I have to watch out not to skewer myself in the garden, and it's probably not the best method to use if you have little children running around. Maybe something like that would work around your apple tree?...See MoreHow do you keep Christmas tree longer?
Comments (6)Ours was purchased and set up in the house on December 11th and it's still doing well today on Epiphany. The lower tier of branches are dry, but not at all brown or dropping needles on their own. The rest of the tree... you can grab the needles and pull and they won't come off. We cut a good three inches off the base and I sprayed the cut immediately with water so it would stay wet while we got it positioned in the stand. We've found that using a hand saw (as opposed to something like a chainsaw or reciprocating saw) coincided with longer life for our trees. I wonder if too much friction sometimes seals off the base. We've had the best results using distilled water with our trees (usually Frasier Firs). Using various sugary solutions or that special liquid additive never worked for us. Also, we run a humidifier in the living room while the tree is up. The tree brings up the humidity a little, but our house is sooo dry that it needs a little help. We've also got an automatic tree waterer from Lee Valley, the kind where you fill an old 2-litre pop bottle and plop it upside down in a base that has a tube running to the tree stand. Those things are awesome. We're going to pick up a second one. Our tree this year drank 6 litres in it's first 24 hours and we're often having to set an alarm for the middle of the night to check on it (you can't take the bottle off to top it up before bed; it has to be empty). Photo is from Christmas morning, but it looks the same today. :)...See MoreChristmas Trees -- How many do you have?
Comments (63)We have a ridiculously large live one every year in our foyer. Ridiculous in that wrangling a live tree that large onto the car and into the stand and into the house is just a special kind of stupid. Sigh. But I can’t, no I WON’T give up doing it. It’s so pretty from both outside and inside that I suffer through the placement and removal days each year. I will say that the Bowling’s Last Stand that we took out a mortgage to buy (lol) a few years ago has almost completely eased my PTSD of a couple of horrific tree fallings in previous years and negated the need for all of the complex fishing wire engineering dh had to fashion before we encountered the wonder of BLS! Here’s this year’s bad boy: (And I have a little lighted table top tree in the study bc it is front facing & also looks good from the street. I am toying with the idea of doing one on the table in the dining room bc it is also a front facing room but, ugh. More stuff to get & store.) edit: you have to click on the pic to get the full effect...apparently tree too big to be contained by Houzz photo elves, lol.)...See Moreslweber_gate_net
