Another potty training mystery...

My 2 y/o DS is completely potty trained when it comes to peeing -- he will run to his potty chair and use it, but has never pooped in the chair. But recently (since the birth of DD three weeks ago!) he will not let us change his poopy diaper. He throws the BIGGEST temper fit if we go near him with a dirty diaper. We've tried bribing, trying to get him to want to take a bath, everything. If we leave his diaper off, he will literally hold it in until he has a diaper on... I don't want to fight him, because I know it's an adjustment time for him with the new baby, but keeping him in a poopy diaper for hours just doesn't seem right either. Help! TIA

I don't have personal experience yet DD is only 6 mos, but do have a friend who was trying to potty train her DD and ran into the same problem...pee pee went into the potty, but poopy sure didn't! One day, her DD 'accidentally' went poopoo in the potty (it all came at the same time) and ever since then, she's not had a problem...maybe this is something you can 'wait out'?

Oh....do I know where you're coming from. My littel girl will pee but no poop. Just like you said...she will hold it in. I'm almost thinking she is embarrassed cause if I know she has to poop i'll put her on the potty..and....are you ready for it....she will cover her head with her blanket!!! She hides when she has to go as well. I too am trying not to make a big deal of it but boy...it sure is trying somedays!!! I keep waiting for the accidental poop in the potty...I pray for it!!! ~laffs~

For some reason, she felt empowered.....and didn't need to control you with the potty issue. For a lot of years, kids learned not to soil their pants well before the age that is the norm these days....do you suppose we have suddenly evolved into a species of creatures with late maturing bladders? Do you suppose your great-great grandmother washed on a washboard the diapers and other clothing, or her children for 4 years?...2 or 3 at a time?....and stoked the fire and made her bread etc? I know my children pottied themselves by 2 years.....and I know my brother and I did.....and I know that my grandmother said her children were trained before 2 ( my brother is 10 years younger....and my grandmother lived with us...so she expressed her opinion.....a lot!) It seems that Freud started the whole "anal retentive" thing. We used to put a child on the potty at 6 months for a little while at a "certain time" each day. If by chance, they performed....the bells and whistles all went off! But...it got them used to the potty....and I used that time to put on my face, brush my teeth and curl my hair. Now it seems we are afraid of scarring a child's psyche by putting them on the potty too young.....but not afraid to give them Karate lessons at 3. A child that has never worn a disposable, nor a pair of waterproof pants will be very uncomfortable when wet. And you'd be surprised at how fast they catch on to how nice it is to always have a warm, dry bottom. I think that after...or about...age 2 it becomes a control issue.....the child is using the potty issue to have some control. I belive it's the same sort of thing that sometimes leads teen age girls with parents who are perfectionists to become anorexic. It's the one area of their life over which they have total control.....when to eat and when to poop. I suggest finding another area of her life to control....like total choice on what to wear.... But....please don't misunderstand.....I wouldn't want to return to the cloth diaper, wash board days for anything!! Linda C

I have another story! This happened yesterday and while it didn't seem funny at first it did after I cleaned the mess up! LOL We laid DS down for a nap and his father put a diaper on him so he wouldn't end up with a wet bed. He told DS that just because he had a diaper on did not mean that if he had to pee or poop he couldn't take it off and go. DS said, "Okay, Daddy." We then went back to our room and watched Trading Spaces and thought about taking naps ourselves. After a while we hear DS coming to our room. He's holding his blankies and when he puts them down, my fiance' sees something on him. He then realizes DS has poop on himself and he asks where his diaper is. I started seeing pictures of the times he pooped and ripped his diaper off and smeared it everywhere. I jump up and dash to his room and scan for a mess. I don't see or smell anything. Then I see the door to the 1/2 bath off of his room is open. I look in there and there is poop on his stool, on the toilet seat in two places and the handle on the toilet and also some in the sink. He had the used some toilet paper to clean up some of the mess and looked in the soap dispenser for some soap but it was out. I start questioning him on where his diaper is and ask about the garbage and he says, "Yes." But there are no dirty diapers in the garbage so were searching for a diaper again. Then we realize that DS realized he had to poop so he went to the bathroom. He took the diaper off and threw it in the garbage and then crawled up on the toilet and held himself on it. He must have sat back pretty far so that's how the poop got on the back of the seat. Then when he went to slide off his butt would have rubbed on the front part where there was more poop. He then must have gotten the toilet paper and wiped himself and gotten some poop on his hand from trying to do that himself, which he then got on the handle when he tried to flush and then in the sink when he tried to wash off. He even demonstrated what he did on the other toilet and it all adds up. He was so proud of himself! I hated having a mess but it has to be a good thing when a almost 3 year old is willing to go and clean up his own mess! LOL I also knew a little boy who thought you could pee anywhere. My father, his girlfriend, my brother and I and the gf's three younger boys were at a local fireman's carnival. We all got on a ride except for the 3 year old. While the rest of us were on the ride, Brett decided he had to pee. He told his Mom and my Dad and her were looking for a porta potty or something. Meanwhile she looks down and there he is peeing right in the middle of the crowd. We don't think anyone saw him though. ~Leslie~

If her won't use one stool to stand on....get another...or use 2 bricks...or a couple of slabs of wood....I't doesn't have to be very tall to get his working parts over the rim of the toilet... And get a seat that fits over the big toilet. Also try sprinkling a bit of confetty into the toilet....so he can sink it....then flush it away. I never could understand why parents bought an extra potty chair when eventually the child has to learn to use the real facilities?...What do you do when you are out? Take a potty chair every where? You don't need to be "louder and nastier", but you do need to be quicker and stricter. Keep a lease on the dog and keep the leash tied to you. That way she won't get a chance to go around the island *g*. If you see her START to squat, immediately give a sharp NO (doesn't have to be loud or mean, but it needs to convey that the behavior is inappropriate) and give her the bum's rush to the door. Once outside, give her the cue word and wait until she goes. I don't allow my dogs to roam all over the place looking for the perfect spot - go potty means go potty right now. When she goes, throw a little party. Having some accidents in the house is a good thing IF you catch her in the act. You get a chance to reinforce that in the house is not a good thing and she learns that much quicker. On the other hand, absolutely do not do anything if you don't catch her ( and nope, seeing her walk away is not catching her). Dogs just don't get it, no matter how many owners insist that "he knew he did wrong" Yeah, sure, they are going to look guilty and hang their heads if you discover them standing next to a mess. Because they are exceptionally good at reading you - they know you are annoyed, even before you open your mouth. They KNOW. And they are not pleased that YOU are not pleased. And don't "offer" to take her out. If you think she needs to go, take her out and give the cue. Don't move until she's produced a dribble or a splat and then throw a potty party again. The combination of crating, scheduled breaks and strict supervision really does produce amazing results

hilarious posts! My grandson, after turning 2.5, refused to poop in the toilet also ; I didnt know where he was and he was in my bathroom sitting on the floor keeping the door from closing completely; it was open an inch. He was embarrassed he'd pooped in his diaper and would only peek out at me.
Very shortly he was totally trained. Loved that blanket over the head story. LOL!

My daughter (2.5) likes to go in her bedroom in the closet and poop. She will go in the potty if her tummy is hurting but other than that, no poop in the potty. She is even more difficult because when she is at school she will do wonderful all day going on the potty, but when she gets home - forget it. She'd rather go in her pants. Never wants to take the time to go on the potty, and screams and cries when I make her. Of course once she goes peepee in the potty, she's all happy saying, "I did it." She even goes so far as telling me and daddy "good job" when we go on the potty.

a friend of mine started to read her daughter her favorite book to get her to poop in the potty. Work like a charm. It also made me laugh. Now I know why many adults use this time for some light reading :)

my niece would poop in the potty - but only after sitting there for ages! her auntie was a favorite companion - lucky me - when we were at family gatherings. personally, i like the I Spy book series for poopy potty times! lol

My son was very easy to train for some reason, maybe it was the way I did it so I will share with you some of the things I tried. This may sound gross, but he thought it was cool to see that mommy or daddy had pooped, and he wanted to do it to. Not at all times but I would show him how big mommy was when she did it, and make a really big deal out of it and celebrate, we would clap our hands and sing. He thought it was the greatest and wanted to do it, too. When he did it he would get a snack or sometype of reward. Of course he grew out of it and started to do it all on his own. I would show him that even our cat does it too, but in the litter box. I guess it just kind of cought on.
