Halloween party for 2 year olds

My daughter-in-law is hosting a Halloween party for 5 2 year olds. She would like ideas on what they can play, or any special crafts they could do.
Any ideas appreciated?

2 year olds rarely play together....they do parallel play....so games at that age are useless, as are most planned activities.
I would have out things for them to play with, maybe small pumpkins for them to paint with washable markers.....and lots of adult supervision.....feed them some pumpkin cookies and orange juice and send them home for a nap.
Sounds to me like your daughter in law needs another baby!

When I had a halloween party for my kids when my youngest was 2 I found that the 2 year olds played just fine together. As long as I kept the games simple. Pin the nose on the pumpkin went over well as did bobbing for apples in a shallow container with just enough water for the apples to barely float. Too much and they can't get ahold of them and they'll get a nose full of water lol. Also make sure that the apples have decent stems so they are easily bitten. Some other games we did were a version of duck duck goose (replacing it with pum pum pumpkin!) and simon says.
I also printed out some halloween themed coloring pages from the net to fill in that time when the games are over but the parents aren't quite there yet.

Have fun and enjoy them while they're little!

Hi Guys...thanks for ALL your great and helpful suggestions. We had our party yesterday. The weather was Sunny and 'nippy'...but just right!! The kids enjoyed the 'haunted' shed and the outdoor graveyard in the field. We even gave them 'hay rides' in my husband's tractor cart that was filled w/hay. We set up benches and a iron chiminea and they toasted marshmallows. I had a pumpkin hunt, hid 48 of them while my friend read Halloween Stories to them. The candy corn jar was a hit. The adults were really competitive with the guessing, as well as the voting for the Best Carved Pumpkin. The first prize in the kids group,was a 3 1/2 yr old. SHE actually painted a cute face on her pumpkin, and was so proud. We didn't get to play any other games, because they were having too much fun doing different things. So, all in all, it went really well. I had made goodie bages for all the kids, and also for the adults. I had collected some vines from my yard, and made small wreaths (15) and hot glued some small autumn fruits and berries and orange organze ribbon (from Michaels),and placed them over - glass votive holders that were 3 for $1, w/pumpkin spice votives..and that was their gift. The adult prizes went pretty well. (3)...the fall centerpiece in small clay flowerpot. two mugs - a dollar each with,two - a dollar each fall plaid napkins and some cocoa packets, and then a small ceramic pumpkin w/4 Halloween Napkins...I let the first place winner choose first, then the second and third. It went over really well, and everyone kept saying how much fun they all had and that the kids had the best time. Even got some calls back this morning to express what a great time they had!! So, thanks again. Oh! also we did a Pot Luck, and EVERYONE outdid themselves...all wanting each others receipes!! Whew...I'm just so relieved it went well, and now I can RELAX...til Christmas!!! LOL

Also a dungeon is really easy to create. Take Refrigerator boxes open them up and paint large rocks with grey spraypaint. Use a zigzag cardboard to paint around. Then all you need is an old table some rats,glow lights in different old lanterns etc. You can wear black and have scary faces or raggedy clothes. Real fun to keep the room dark and the cardboard works great for walls. Hang webbing down from the ceiling along with pieces of rope so when kids rub into it they get scared!!Sound effects and you ve got a great scary dungeon. Use old chain etc. This is a good one because you can find everything inexpensively.Have Fun!!

I teach 2 year olds at a preschool, and also have four kids of my own, with my third being 2. A few things that 2's love: Cover a table or two with craft paper and let them decorate it with markers or crayons Shaving cream sculptures (just let them play with it on a table, great for doing right after a messy craft or messy cupcakes) have a bucket of water nearby to rinse off hands in afterwards. Dance on bubble wrap (amazingly fun to pop by jumping and dancing, does not have to be haloween music) Make popup finger puppets by putting a halloween sticker onto the top of a popsicle stick, then cut a little slit into the bottom of a dixie cup, and insert the stick into the hole so that the sticker part is inside the cup, and the stick is coming out of the bottom like a handle. The child can hold the cup and the stck and make the sticker popup and say "Boo!" This can keep them busy for soooooooo long!!!!!!!!!! It is one of my favorite crafts for this age. my oldest is six and STILL gets a kick out of it! I cannot tell you what a big hit this has been with every child I have tried it with! (We make them for evry holiday: a groundhog in Feb, flowers in Spring, santa in a chimney, family photos anytime.......) Another great fave, this will keep them busy for quite a while: buy or make cupcake with plain icing and let the kids decorate their own cupcake with sprinkles and candy, etc. WATCH FOR CHOKING HAZARDS!!!!!!!! Make ghosts out of lollipops with tissues and rubber bands. draw on eyes, etc. make sure you have mirrors out, if possible-- at this age seeing themselves in costume is great entertainment as well!!! Good luck!!! I would be tempted to skip the pinata and the trick-or-treating, or at least do them minimally. Everyone gets so much candy at this time of year!

I'd suggest having it at home also. Once you get started on these toddler parties, you end up being invited to every one and you have to buy a present too. It gets expensive very quickly. Could you possibly temporarily remove furniture from maybe the living room, dining room or child's bedroom to make more room? I think an indoor camping theme might be fun (without the sleepover). You could make tents out of sheets and blankets and have the kids play in there. Any other theme you might have going, like bugs or Elmo could be worked into it too. You could have hot chocolate and other appropriate foods. Fake foliage and stuffed animals could be used to dress up the area. I'm suggesting this because someone gave my two boys a play tent for Christmas and they love it. They'll take toys in there sometimes and play instead of running around the house. Have fun with whatever you do.

I've been searching for Halloween crafts for my son that just turned 2. We made salt dough (1c flour, 1c salt, 1/2 c water - just stir and squish) yesterday in various Halloween colored. I squeezed the black and green through a garlic press. He enjoyed squishing the "worms" back together. I left some of the dough white and any odd shaped white thing could be stood up and eyes added to look like a ghost.
I cut an orange circle out and various yellow shapes out of construction paper for him to make a jack-o-lantern. I helped a bit with the glue stick, and let him decide where the eyes and such would go. You would laugh out loud if you saw the awkward pumpkin that was created, it's just too cute.
We used traces of his feet for ghosts w/ the toes at the bottom and his hand prints for bat wings and spider legs. All out of constuction paper w/ different shapes cut for the bodies and heads.

The Family Fun website has lots of ideas w/ an option of searching with the "craft finder" for a holiday and age of the crafter.
Next we are going to try egg carton pumpkins and spiders (with legs made from pipe cleaners). Have fun!
