Jon, I finally clicked on the web address under your original post. At those prices at HD these are packs of 6 or 9 individual bare-root hostas. That's why they are so expensive. Each plant might be $3 to $4. Our HD had better garden prices than Lowe's and Walmart. A 3 lb bottle of Ortho Bug-Geta Plus anti-slug pellets was costing $9.45 two years ago. But now they have only a 2 lb bag for the same price at my store. But on the internet you can buy the 3 lb bottle for $10.97 from HD with free delivery to their store, but it is out of stock online now. Others offer the 3 lb bottle for $9.99 plus delivery, but my order got messed up.

You know, rob, it worked out well: We also lived on a corner, at the first traffic light the big truck rigs encountered when they reached town after driving fast on the highway for who-knows-how-long. They'd see that light, try to make it, & if they didn't, they braked hard, & the truck bounced on the pavement, making the windows vibrate & rattle & the window weights (told you it was an old house) would bang around against the inside of the window frame. After a lot of long nights of that, followed by the church people slamming doors & hollering, & after I rolled up a little rug & stuffed it under the door to keep the north wind from blowing out the flame in the gas heater, & the wind blew the rug across the floor... my husband decided the rational thing to do was to buy a house. & we did!

A couple of years ago when we had our windows, doors and out side trim painted. The contractor told us before quoting that she would need lead tests performed before here guys could start sanding etc. I asked her if she was ok with us doing a DIY test and she responded that that's what she was going to recommend we do. So I bought a home lead testing kit designed for painted surfaces. The kit contained several tests and a control that made sure the tests were working properly, thusly assured, we tested all windows and doors. The doors had several coats of paint, so we chipped some off to reach all paint layers and tested all of them. Luckily, we didn't find any lead. But all the old paint was white and I believe that lead was more commonly added to dark colors, as lead intensifies their colors. I don't remember how much I paid for the test kit, but I don't think I paid more than $30.- I subsequently tested a hand painted vintage advertising sign, the test turned dark purple (positive) in a hurry.
