Munkos... Thank you for your story! I have never heard of another boxer doing that. Its ALWAYS the best to here about the same breed because they do act alike in alot of ways!! I have an adult boxer and this pup. One thing I have not really done is let him play outside (because its cold, and) somebody else told me that one he goes outside to go potty ONLY let him go potty, NO PLAYING!! So, I only have let him play inside or on walks. But, yes everytime when we ask him to go outside, we always say "Do you have to go potty?" that's what we say. It doesn't seem to fase him but I know in the back of his mind it has to be. Its just crazy though, I never remember having these issues with my adult boxer. I got her when she was 5 weeks also. Maybe its my mind blocking it out!!! lol :-) No, she's my whole life! SG... Your right! Gosh you are always right!! I have never thought of it like its mine and my husbands fault but it is!! Another thing we have not done, is kept him on a leash at all times outside his kennel. Doesn't your pup get tangled and upset with the leash then? Thank you for asking your vet about my situation. I'm not that close to my vet to do that. So his age is perfect for training?? That makes me soo happy!! And last but not least... when you crate your puppy (in the beginning) like when you leave, does he/she cry?? I work right next to my house and I can hear him over there crying and howling his head off. We did put a sheet over his crate and put treats hid in there but it didn't seem to help. At nighttime he got totally better with sleeping!! I took all the suggestions I got here and used them all and they worked! We put him in the crate with not alot of attention right before, put his sheet over his crate and he knows its time for bed. If he wines in the middle of the night (and we know its just to play) we slightly tap on his crate and say "shhhhhh". Very lightly. It puts him RIGHT to sleep!! But in the middle of the day when I leave for work, how do I make him comfortable enough to stop crying?? Thanks again everyone for your imput. Please keep the stories coming!! Thanks, Elycia

Dachshunds can be more difficult to house train and require a little more patience than some other breeds, so this may be why the PO's left him in the park. Beagles fall into this same category so if you've been able to house train yours I feel sure you can house train the dachshund. It's frustrating to bring a new pet into the house that isn't as well behaved (in house training) as your other pets, so I fully understand how you're feeling! My advise is to pretend this is a young puppy and start house training from scratch. I would start by taking him out, without the beagle, in the yard and stay with him until he goes. Keep him moving, don't play with him and don't talk until you see him go. The instance you see him either pee or poop, give a command you want to use from now on, then give him lots of praise. I always say 'go tinkle' and 'do your business' to my dog and he will now go on command......or at least try! :~) There is much info online regarding house training a dog so I'd advise you to read some of the articles. gpwuster-Let me ask you a question and I don't mean this in a hateful way.Can YOU "hold it" for 9 hours? To answer your question,yes,you are expecting too much of him to hold the poop and pee that long! First of all,Monty is still a puppy.I think it is unfair to the dog to keep him crated for 9 hours without a break. That's just my opinion.Could you possibly have someone come in during the day and let him out or maybe you or DH could come home for lunch and let him out? Also,small dogs should not be going 9 hours without food because of blood sugar issues.They need to eat several small meals during the day. Another solution would be closing off an area with a puppy gate (not a closed door).Maybe a laundry room,bathroom or some other small uncarpeted area in the house for him during the day.Place the opened crate,(prop the door open with something heavy) food,water,a few favorite toys and a puppy pad in the enclosed area.I know there is a lot of negative advice about the puppy pads,but when the choice is for the puppy to be locked in a crate for 9 hours a day as opposed to being in a secured area with a puppy pad,in my opinion the puppy pad is better.If he can hold it all night and has never peed/pooped in the crate at night I don't think he will start.I know that all dogs are not the same but I have a 13 year old female Chi that potties on puppy pads when we are not home but when we are she runs to the door and bounces around when she needs to go out.She doesn't pee anywhere else in the house.She doesn't use the puppy pad when someone is here to let her out so that kinda debunks the theory that they will think it is ok to pee in the house if they are pad trained!LOL I am at this moment training a tiny 7 week old Chi-weenie (less than 1 1/2 lbs) to go on the puppy pad.I have had her 3 days and she is already going to the pad by herself to pee.We are still working on the poop thing but she is learning fast.We also take her outside and she does her jobs as well.I am disabled and can't take her outside.She only goes out when DH is here to take her,so pad training is the only other option.She is crated only at night and when we are going to be out for a few hours during the day.She has never peed or pooped in her crate.I'm not saying this is the greatest solution or that I won't be here tomorrow with the same problems others are experiencing.Just that this is what is working for me,so far!LOL

DGS learned this faster by imitating his father. He still wasn't paying attention to his body until wanting to get out of the 'Baby' class in preschool provided a motivation. He was three. Our DS was very slow to learn this. I've wonderded if that had something to do with his high *pain* tolerance -- which I didn't discover until later. Perhaps the connections between nerves and brain aren't as strong. (DS drove from Springfield to Chicago with appendicitis, dismissing it as indigestion. It nearly ruptured by the time I got him into the hospital. He's walked on a broken ankle before recognizing there was a problem.) My grandmother claimed that she potty trained me to pee in a teacup before I was a year old. Uh-huh, sure. We know who was 'trained'. I took courage from the knowledge that our DS would not be attending high school in a diaper. LOL It'll 'take' eventually!
