Extremely picky eater

My son is 3 years old and he's all of a sudden starting going through, what I want to call a stage, where, when I fix our meals, he says he's not hungry, he's tired....and he absolutely refuses to eat. I don't HOW many meals that I've thrown into the trash because he hasn't eaten them.

I know that I, myself, was also an extremely picky eater as a child, but at least I ate. There have been days where quite literally ALL he survives on are the Pediasure drinks. I've tried making a "home cooked" meal and he ABSOLUTELY refuses to even try a bite. Even if I put a taste in his mouth, he will turn around and spit it out. I've heard people say to fix "what they like" and I have, but I feel I'm starting to run out of options.

That's all I do is cook around what I know he WILL and WON'T eat, but now, for some strange reason, he's not wanting to eat ANYTHING. I'm just about it hit my wit's end and I certainly don't want to be mean and hateful about him eating his meals, but what do I do???? I really need some kind of advice or help??? ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE ABSOLUTELY & GRATEFULLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take away the Pediasure and don't feed him between meals unless it's a healthy snack at a regular snack time. If he learns that mama won't cater, he'll start eating when the food is there.

I have a picky eater also. I've found that if I offer less options and don't cater to him, he eats better and will try new things. He is still a plain food eater, but now I have more options. If he trys to eat what the rest of us have, I go easier on him. If he doesn't eat, he may go hungry for a while.

I agree, get rid of the Pediasure, it's filling him up. It's not necessary, despite the guilt-laden advertising, it should only be used when your child is ill.

Just give him small (even tiny) meals. He won't starve. Six meals a day are just as good as three meals a day. Let him graze with a few finger food choices. Give him a hug after he eats, but don't overdo it with either negative or positive reinforcment.

Don't make a big deal, he's learning to push your buttons. Mealtime needs to be pleasant, turning it into a battle is one you won't win. Put some food out for him to eat while you are puttering around in the kitchen, but leave him alone. If he eats some, great, if not, he'll eat next time. He won't starve.

He'll get hungry and start eating. Don't even allow supplements (Pediasure) into the house, it's taking the place of good nutrition for him.

I am a picky eater. DH is not. My kids -- well, two out of three of them -- eat a wide range of foods. But because I am picky and I am Head Chef, my family only gets adventurous foods (my term) when they eat elsewhere! It's become a joke with people who know us. "Can we go to this restaurant? Can you find anything on the menu that you'll eat?" I'm not THAT bad but I am a baby and won't try ethnic foods like Indian, Moroccan, etc... I do eat Chinese food and Thai and Mexican. I can't stand dishes that mix meat and fruit. It just makes me want to gag. I won't eat hummus. I don't get it. Blecch. But it's always in the fridge because my family likes it. I balk at eating casseroles when I can't identify the ingredients. I don't like certain foods to "run together" on the plate -- I got that one from my father. Certain things are okay, but OMG, if I have a cold salad on a plate and it's running into something hot on the plate? IWWWW. Raw oysters or clams? Grosss. But I love lobster and shrimp. I am fully aware that I am a baby and perhaps a little bit crazy in this regard!

Annie, I actually don't have a problem with Sebastian choosing to socialize rather then eat, well not with Sebastian anyway. I feel that part of why he is going to school is for the social part. I hate the way the schools devalue eating and socialization. The other problem is the cafeteria, actually it is a cafe-gym-atorium and it is loud and awful. All the kids prefer it when they have lunch in their classroom, at least according to my informal poll. lol, I have often had much with them in the cafeteria and once in the classroom. They were much better at eating while socializing in the classroom. The problem is lunch is when the teachers get a break. I would like teachers to eat with them and have their break during recess. My felling about food is make sure to feel good about everything you serve so it does not matter what they make a meal of. I told a friend of mine when we had 1 year olds, serve them good food and don't pay attention to what is on the floor or still on the tray. So long as you served it it counts. I don't even make my kids take a bite. I tried that once and the gaging etc was not worth it. Plus he had built up that he would not like it. I have told them if it is on their plate and they don't want it, don't talk about it. If they say something is disgusting I will require a bite, ignore it and I am fine. I just hate to have my food insulted ;-) Also they will need these manners for other peoples homes. My kids can have problems in the house of some peers as they are used to a certain level of food. They will not eat frozen pizza, super market rotisserie chicken ... We have friends who eat frozen pizza, when we go over to their house for pizza we bring dough, sauce etc. -Robin

My daughter would make the following bars and send them to me in care packages while I was riding my bicycle across the US. Such a sweetie!!! Lori's granola bars I heard there were a few requests for my granola bar recipe that I've been using when sending my mom supplies. Here it is. The "*"'s are recent additions to the original recipe. Granola Bars 2 c golden grahams cereal or other non sugar-based cereal (meaning no fruit loops) 4 graham crackers 2 c oatmeal (I do not use the quick oats) 1 c raisins 1/2 c honey 1/4 c light corn syrup 1 c peanut butter In a medium bowl, crumble cereal into tiny and small pieces. Add graham crackers... crumble more. Add oatmeal and raisins... mix. In a separate bowl mix honey, corn syrup, and peanut butter. Add this to the dry mixture. This will be difficult to mix, but adding more liquid will make them sticky, and too gooey. **If you happen to have a Kitchen Aid mixer, I've found mine works well for this. I don't even pre-mix the gooey ingredients anymore. I have a mini loaf pan that has 8 small slots. I've used this, also a mini muffin pan, I've also simply hand formed the mixture into several granola bars. Putting it all into one dish works too, but it does not cut well after cooking. Advice is to find a way to make separate bars. Form and pack them well, so they don't fall apart while eating. **I also now hand pack individual bars and place on a stoneware pizza pan covered in aluminum foil, and the bottoms no longer get too brown this way. Place into a preheated oven of 250 degrees for 15 minutes. Once done, let cool, and store in an airtight container. ** Note there is no actual granola in the original recipe. I have since found granola at health stores, and substitute granola for some of the cereal... about 1 cup. If you've added to much dry ingredients simply add more liquid stuff so you can get them to hold together. Vice versa if it's too sticky. ** You can also substitute dried apples or other such fruit for the raisins. I've also made them with mini chocolate chips and mini marshmallows. happy eating, -Lori

When I rescued my first shih tzu, she was 1-1/2 and I tried everything to get her to eat (different foods). I was fostering other dogs, and she took to the Nutro Lamb and Rice, so we ate that for a while. I used Biljac after that, and for years now I have used Solid Gold/Lamb and Rice (hundenflocken), having added 2 more shih tzus to our family. They all eat it and love it, but look for people food. I tend to put a little chicken, rice, or pumpkin (or other veggies such as peas if I have them) on top, just to add a variety and make it a little more enticing to them...I agree that eating the same kibble year after year seems kind of boring to me. I think several points were made and yes, your shih tzu will eat if not offered something "better" and they are hungry. I would recommend just using a really good quality food, and mine eat twice a day. My first shih tzu is now 15 and in great health except for her eyes which are getting cataracts and some stiff joints (hey, she's old! My joints are stiff too! LOL!) I know you probably worry, but if you consistently try and stick with the food and see if he will eat it. A few days of pickiness might wear off when he realizes that is what is being offered. I've also heard cottage cheese is a wonderful additive (the rescue I was with for years added some to the dogs food). It doesnt have to be time consuming to add a little dollop of something to kibble, and my dogs seems to think it's a real "treat". IMHO

I'm going to add (after watching my granddaughter), watch what he's drinking at meals, she'll dring all her milk first, then be full...she's filling her stomach up with liquid, and not with nutrition, so they have to limit her milk to after she's eaten 1/2 her supper.

Try making the food fun to eat. I had a picky eater, so I got her a little apron, and put food in the pockets for her as her afternoon snack. A couple of grapes in one, some Cheerios in another, etc. Someone else suggested using as teh serving plate the baking pan for several muffins. Put just a little of something in the bottom of each muffin cup, and put that on his high chair tray. Slice one or two grapes into quarters, 10 Quaker Puffed rice in another, two rasins in another, etc. Not a whole lot of food so that it is overwhelming, a cooked carrot coin or two, just a taste of good foods only, no sweets.
