my 3 yr old daughter will not mind

Please help! My 3 year old daughter is going through a stage where you can tell her no and she acts as though she understands (and I do believe she does) and as soon as I turn my back she does it anyway, and is very sneaky about it. She gets into everything, again, sneaky. It wouldn't be that big of a deal if she wasn't drawn to the things that could ultimately hurt her.

We've tried time outs to no avail. We've tried spanking, but she would be getting one constantly throughout the day and that just won't do. Right now we are trying collecting smiley faces towards a reward.

She is just so different from my 10 year old. The 10 year old was content with the mention of discipline.

Any ideas that might work?

DS#2 is almost 4 yo. He can be a challenge because he has some of those "sneaky" traits also. I get the most cooperation from putting favorite items in time out. DS didn't want to go to bed the other night so the Darth Vader cape went into time out where he didn't know where it was and he couldn't push up a chair to get it back. THe next night all I had to do was mention the timeout possibilites again and I got cooperation.

Adella's method also worked for me. I put the favorite toy of the day in the top of the closet. Then to connect the dots, I would say "Elmo is going in timeout in the closet because you did x y z". She would cry and cry.

After about two toy timeouts, the behavior would usually be nipped in the bud for the time being. It would usually crop up a few weeks later if another kid at preschool was doing the same thing she'd start again. We would repeat the toy timeout using whatever the current fave toy was.

(oddly, putting HER in age appropriate timeout - i.e. 1 minute for every year of age - never seemed to work with her).

YOU MUST FOLLOW THESE STEPS EXACTLY. 1. Put her to bed as using normal bed time routine. 2. When she gets up out of bed, tell her, "No, it's bed time", and put her back to bed. 3. When she gets up, tell her "Bed time" put her back to bed. 4. When she gets up...just put her back to bed. Repeat step 4 until she goes to sleep. SHE WILL GO TO SLEEP EVENTUALLY. You may have to repeat step 4 for a couple of hours. Do not let her wear you down or it will take even longer. Here is where you have to be more stubborn than her. You see, what she has learned in that short period of time is that "If I make a big enough fuss, Mom and Dad will give in to me, I will get my way". To show you that this will work, keep a journal. On night #1 write down what time you started, make a tick mark for every time you put him back to bed, and write down the time she fell asleep. Repeat nightly until you can just put her to bed and she stays there (remember, it doesn't matter if she falls asleep right away, really it matters that she stays in bed quietly, she can talk and sing to herself as much as she wants until she falls asleep..no books or movies, just her and her favorite sleeping toy). The reason to do this is when you're frustrated on day 3 or 4, you will see that it really is taking less time than it did on day one. Usually by day 3 or 4 they are good to go, but it may take 2 weeks..but it is only 2 weeks then you will have her sleeping fine!!! Serioulsly 2 weeks MAX!!! Vickey-MN

Do not be too quick to dismiss your previous plumber for suggesting a AAV (Air Admittance Valve, "studor vent") for your kitchen island. Although the Uniform Plumbing code(UPC) & International Residential Code(IRC)have radically differing views on how a kitchen island vent is to be constructed, nonetheless, both the IRC & UPC do allow an AAV for kitchen island venting. Under the IRC all structures are required to have one "Main Vent",which must run undiminished in size from the structure "Main Drain" through the roof. After that we are permitted to install an unlimited number of AAV's. Under the UPC they do not require a "Main Vent" but all fixture vents are required to be sized by the total DFU (Drainage fixture unit) load of all fixtures served by that vent. Under the UPC a structure is only permitted a maximum of one AAV, with the expressed written consent of the local inspecting authority, and in most cases a kitchen island is the only location where they will grant the exception. Now what is the difference between the kitchen drain and your bathroom drain you ask? When we have a sink on an island it is generally the only fixture attached to that line. As the water drains from the sink it pushes the air ahead of the water in the pipe. Under some circumstances this can result in a slight vacuum in the pipe behind the moving water. This partial vacuum would then result in the standing water in the trap being sucked into the pipe by siphon action and once the water has passed on down the trap is left dry, allowing sewer gas to enter the structure. In this case we install an AAV, which would permit air to enter the pipe behind the liquid flow, thus negating the suction effect. There is a slim chance that you might resolve your problem by installing an AAV on the lavatory drain line, an when you consider the cost of installing an AAV as opposed to opening walls it might be well worth your time to try it, however I suspect you have a different problem in your bathroom. You state that you hear a gurgling sound in the tub or lavatory when another drain is used. It is possible that the water in the gurgling trap is being sucked out, and in that case an AAV might resolve the problem, but I suspect you problem is not a result of negative pressure (the partial vacuum) but rather it result from positive pressure. As the water from one fixture flows through the pipe it pushes the air ahead, causing a slight positive air pressure. Normally that positive pressure would be pushed up and out a roof vent however if your system does not have the required roof vent as one fixture is draining it will push that air up through one of the adjacent fixture drains and out through the trap. Keep in mind that the air in the line contains sewer gas so as that air & sewer gas mix is pushed out you get the odor. The odor may seem greater at some times than others. That does not mean the sewer gas is not leaking because not all the component of sewer gas are odorous. In fact, one of the main gases that comprise sewer gas is totally odorless.

I can relate. I have a adult SD now 26 years old, however, when she was 17-18 years old she sounds pretty much the same as your BF 16 year old daughter. I too felt she was not learning responsibilty and that she thought money grew on trees. She often threw money away on non necessary items and daddy picked up the bill, paying her credit card bills. DH over the last 7 years has been slowly weaning SD off daddy's pocket book. SD keeps attempted to get money from daddy but lately daddy says he can lend it to her but she has to pay it back. It seems to be working. Remember she is now 26 years old. It takes time and it has been a hard 7 years for me (and DH) watching these stepkids continuely attempt to get money from daddy to pay for their fun spending. DH admits it is his fault for always just giving in and paying for everything even when he knew it was wrong or not in their best interest. I think the OP had it right when she mentioned the divorce guilt and just wanting to he a good Dad by giving out money. About the hanging on BF. Yes, my SD did the same thing and even gave DH a picture of her hanging on him for a Christmas present. I just blew it off and it has decreased over the years. SD occassionally does it now but I have noticed DH is not as comfortable with it as when she was younger. He too feels she is getting to old for this kind of behavior. DH gives her a hello or goodby hugs but the hanging on daddy has decreased. Hope this helps. Just remember you have a few years to go with this. It will not go away if you marry. I know in our pre-marriage counceling the councelor asked DH (fiance at the time) when he planned to stop financial support for SD. The councelor said I had a right to know this. DH responded after 4 years of college. I occassionally reminded DH of this. Maybe some counceling or asking BF future plans for financial support of his daughter may help you decide if you want to stay in this relationship. Good luck.

If my kid smoked pot occasionally, I would not be too concerned, but not sure why this devolved into the pros and cons of pot, since the OP posted that it was much more than that!! Smoking pot, hanging out with a controlling boyfriend, and not being very motivated in school could be a temporary bad spell as a person adjusts to being on their own, or it could be signs of depression and a downward spiral. I teach college, and that combo would indicate depression to me. Each sign on their own, probably not, but all together, perhaps. What to do about it is another story. I have a friend who had a son who was in an abusive and inappropriate relationship for years, and also had trouble finishing college. It took him a long time. They kept communication open, had to stomach a lot of heartache as he made bad choices and suffered the consequences, had to set clear boundaries, tried to get him any help he would accept and use. He kicked around for quite a while but did graduate and eventually got out of the relationship. Some kids just take a little more time than others, their path is not as straight forward. Try to accept that this may be a more difficult path for your child, and steel yourself for being there however you can. There may be no quick fix, it may be a case for stoicism. But keep communicating and keep looking for openings for helpful suggestions, while keeping boundary issues and realism in mind. Kind of a middle road that is difficult to follow. Oh, another one of my students went through almost this exact thing. She eventually dropped out of school for a while, but I got a nice note from her several years later that she had graduated from another school that she transferred to and got a job. So try and keep that perspective in mind, there is not always one ideal path that all kids need to go on, some take detours but get there in the end. They go through a rough patch, but find their way out!

Just wanted to say that this is a very common phase for kids this age. I always say that the 3's are way worse than the 2's because at 2, they are just curious and don't always get why they can't do things but at 3, they like to do it anyway just to push your buttons it seems!

Time outs work the best for us. It doesn't have to be for a long time either!

The one minute, per age thing isn't correct. You should actually have them sit there until they calm down and seem okay. Then you can reason with them and tell them why they were put there.

Why didn't I think of the toy time out? I have a 4yr. old girl. She usually...85% of the time is really good, but some days....is a challenge and ends up in time out herself. I'm kind of a no nonsense kind of parent...there is a time for fun and a time to behave, she knows the difference. Time out for her works for as long as she is in it, as soon as she is out, the mouth comes in and lands her back in time out. Maybe next time I'll take "blankie" and put it in time out till she can hold the attitude & the mouth.

My daughter will be 3 in September she is the most impossible child to get along with she is spoiled i believe and that is caused by my mother which makes it hard on me. Anyways i have tried everything to get her to listen to me and it doesnt work she is too smart so threats only last so long. She knew her ABC's by 2 and she knew her 1,2,3's by 1 1/2. I can't seem to do anything right by her even if something will hurt her or her 1 yr old sister i take it away she throws a hour and 1/2 fit. I am at my wits end. I have tried putting her in time out in 3 diffrent places, i have tried spanking no deal, smacking hand, threat with the belt (but never using it) tried locking myself in my room to ignore it, tried talking to her but kinda hard to do when she is screaming in my face or throwing herself on the ground trying to kick or hit me. I think i need nanny 911.....HELP!!!!!

Threats NEVER work with kids, ACTIONS work. Children of 3 are pretty stubborn, but #1 they are NOT smarter than the parent, and #2 they are not in charge, YOU are (You are the parent after all.

You tell the child to do something once (ONE command, not ..pick up your room, make your bed and get dressed, they won't "hear" all of that), and it has to be "fairly" simple, and the expectations on your part have to be fairly simple. Get dressed. When you're dressed we will have breakfast. Now follow through. Temper tantrum. So what, go on with your life, but NO BREAKFAST until she's dressed.

Do NOT hit your sister or you WILL sit on the naughty spot for 3 minutes. You hit your sister, you will now sit in the naughty spot for 3 minutes (and you keep putting her on it and re-starting the timer until she is on for 3 minutes), Yes the first 3-5 times will he hell, but it will get better when she realizes YOU are in charge, not her.

I can completely relate to you.. my 3 year old is sneaky, takes things off dressers and hides them, runs around at the speed of lightning counting on the fact that I cant chase him fast (due to being 7months pregnant), tells us No, does things after we tell him not to, hides and writes on the walls, even put his hand quickly in the toilet after having a bm and stuck his hand straight in his mouth... im so disturbed by his unabandoned ferrell behavior, its almost as if hes a stranger in our own home. He enjoys being outside andgoing out to play, but being pregnant in Florida in the heat of August and September, you basically will faint if outside to long, its awful, so I could see how some of his behavior is in part to our minimal time outside recently. Ive asked my mother to play with him outside when she keeps him, but she has No tolerance for my child, to the point that I dont allow him over there.

My daughter will be 4 in March and she will not mind us and she repeats everything at least 10 times. She is also sneaky and always does the things we tell her not to. It has became very overwhelming since we just had another baby 2 weeks ago. I have tried every punishment I can think of from time out and spanking to taking away her toys and the things she likes. I do not know what else to do. I thought maybe it was for attention so I have tried spending more time with her but nothing has changed any ideas on what I can do?
