Best place for 2 yr old B-day party

Ok Parents....gather around and help this tired ole SAHM! My son's 2yr birthday is coming up and I dont know where to take him.

Im wanting a place that is indoors where he & his friends can run around and not get hurt (or into things). Are there any places that are just for kids and this situation? Someone suggested Chuck E Cheese....but he is only 2 and I doubt he would be interested in the big boys toys. I have checked out some science museums with hands on exhibts, but it was too expensive to accomadate everyone.

Any suggestions? Cant have it at our place cause we have no fence and nothing to entertain the kids outside. (its January here and the weather is sooo unpredictable).

Is this a big family party? If not, I would have a simple party at home with only a few age-mates. A party for a 2-year-old only needs to last an hour or two, and doesn't need to be fancy. You don't need to have a lot of space for the kids to play, either. A living room or family room with some toys is enough.

My niece lives with me, and for her two-year-old party we invited four age-mates, a few older kids, and parents. We ate cake and ice cream, opened gifts, played, and then ended. It was wonderful!

I have been to two large parties for 2-year-olds where the birthday boy or girl just fell apart from the unusual stimulation.

I hate to say this but I agree. At 1, 2 and 3 I just did simple at home parties where they had no more than 3 little friends over for a 'play date', then got to dive into some cake and chow down.

Believe me, the $ adds up and I see you are a SAHM...so save the bucks for 4 and up! You'll need it then! :-)

My DD is a December baby so the weather never cooperates. I just set up toys in the house for them to play with and have fun. With only 3 or so kids it was just exactly right.

The Easter freeze plus any thin new growth from the previous growing season has spelled out a problem for lots of our local CMS. Earlier in the spring many of them that had about one inch thick trunks even had to be pruned all the way down to almost ground level. In those situations, the CMs reprouted and have regrown to a point where they are now able to be pruned back again, leaving the strongest growing main leader trunks to continue growing and hardening off. Those newly grown trunks are now only about a quarter of an inch thick, and we are very concerned for their need to at least double in thickness and hardened off again so they will have a chance for survival this coming winter. For that reason we do not plan on dead heading the spent flowers to force new growth and more freqent than normal reblooming. If your Acoma CM is not struggling as much as what I just described has happened to many of our locally Grown CMs, then it must be a very good CM Cultivar. It is good that you are going to fertilize it. While you are doing that make certain that the root flare of your Acoma is just at ground level, and that any mulch, which may be covering the rootball, is pulled back at least 4 inches away from the rootflare. If you can not find the root flare when you pull back a little bit of the soil around the trunks of you CM, that could be indicating, you CM may now be situated too deeply into the soil. If that is the case continue removing the soil until you do find the root flare (that topmost place where the roots begin to grow out of the trunk) and slightly taper the soil. Then cover the entire planting bed with mulch, but like mentioned above, Keep the mulch at least 4 inches away from the trunk. When you reported that your Acoma has grown some, did you mean that you have seen new growth this spring and early summer? Is it fully leafed out? Have you avoided doing the "crape myrtle murder" pruning on it, except where the trunks and branches may have frozen already from winter and Easter freeze kill? If your Acoma has been "CM murder" pruned it could take even longer for your CM to recover, just like it slowes the CM down from forming the bloom buds, if you have not pruned back, to the first set of three leaves, the freeze killed dead ends of the branches. At any rate do not give up on your Acoma just yet. The trunk, foliage, and root developing that it has been and is currently doing should make it a much more resiliant shrub or small tree, once it finally does begin to put forth large amounts of its energy for blooming.

When my mother turned 70, we gave her a surprise party and wrote and performed a little musical of her life. She definitely loved that! But our family is into stuff like that. Yours may be more into art, writing, etc. For my 50th birthday, my husband contacted everyone he could think of and asked them to contribute a little anecdote for an album. He put photos in the back. I adore it. I recently did a "this is your life" slide show for a party honoring someone. Her family gave me photos. But in addition to the real photos from her life, we put in lots of downloaded photos with her face photoshopped in (always the same photo of her face, and always just a little too large). For example, when the narration was about her meeting and marrying her husband, there were a few of the two of them together, and then her with Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Homer Simpson, King Kong ... etc. It was really funny to think of things; she is a VERY refined and elegant lady, and we had her getting a tattoo, pole dancing, in a motorcycle gang, on a Tabloid cover, in the Sopranos -- like that. What made it funny was that we kept the narration perfectly straight and played very formal music behind it. It was very well received, and the guest of honor loved it. Do you think your mom might like something like one of these ideas? I, too, think I would prefer something like that to making the guests play games. I think it is so nice of you to make a party for your mother. You don't need to "program" every minute with games, though -- your mom's friends will enjoy socializing with each other.

I presume there's a reason why this child is in fulltime daycare? You and your husband both work? Any chance one of you could change their schedule so the need for putting your child in daycare would be reduced? I'm all for children socializing with others, but truly, NO ONE teaches or cares for a child like a parent does. You're seeing that now. Children of that age do need a lot of time with their parents. As to naptime--your child must need the sleep or he wouldn't be napping so long. You say bedtime is a challenge. As a parent, and a family living teacher, I have to ask--do you know what the most common reason for difficult bedtimes is? It's that the child is OVERtired. what a lot of young parents don't understand is how a child's body works. When we get tired, we wind down and get sleepy. When toddlers get tired, their bodies release loads and loads of extra adrenalin--hence you have a hyper child who is too wired to go to sleep. There has even been a very reputable study that shows that many (not all, mind you, but about half) the cases of ADHD in children are NOT legitimate ADHD, but simply lack of adequate sleep. Does your child get a full 12 hours of sleep daily (adding up the naptime and bedtime?) Even if he is, it's possible he's one of those who truly does need a little more sleep than 'average'. However, what you're describing about the daycare is totally unacceptable. You're describing a facility where the workers don't care about the child or parents, where they're there just putting in time to collect a paycheck, where they're happy doing as little as possible (a sleeping child is one they don't have to: care for, amuse, watch, etc). The problems you've noticed all come down to the same thing--the daycare workers DO NOT WANT to do their job. I wouldn't allow someone with that attitude to dogsit my pet, let alone care for the most precious thing in my life. It may be time to look into other alternatives--as I suggested, perhaps a schedule change at work. Or maybe there's a family member you trust who would be glad to watch your child for the same $$$ you're paying the daycare. Or you may have to go further afield and find a different daycare center (even if you have to drive some to get there) or a retired person in your neighborhood who is more responsible than the place you're currently using. Good luck! You mentioned your husband--if you are both working, I urge you to sit down and crunch the numbers. Unless you're a really high-end executive, or in some other high paying job, you may find, when you do the math, that you're going to work for just a few cents an hour. Add up: the cost of daycare, the higher taxes you pay, the cost of transportation, the cost of going to work (clothes, union dues, buying lunches out, work parties, gifts for coworkers, etc), the cost of being out of the house hours a day (buying more takeout/prepared foods, hiring others to do stuff around the house like yard work, painting, repairs, etc). When I got pregnant, we did the calculations--and we figured that I'd be going to work for $2000/year or less. Add to that, the fact that you're turning the care and raising of your child over to strangers--it wasn't worth it to us. It made sense financially for me to stay home. It made even more sense to use for me to be the one caring for our daughter, teaching her academically, being the one to educate her in morals and ethics--no one does all that like a fulltime mom. There's a reason why this country is having a lot of the problems it is (crime, irresponsibility, unwed parents, abusive relationships), and IMO, a big part of that is that children are NOT being raised by their parents, the way they have been in the past. So, if I understand correctly, he's been doing this for a year now? My guess is something is really stressing him within the new home. Are there any other pets inside or outside the home? Are there any strays hanging around outside your bedroom? He's had a lot of changes thrown at him and I suggest you find a food he likes to eat (not what you think is good for him) and a litter that he'll use. With the litter, start with a clumping clay litter that is unscented (Petco bulk is a good one). If he's never eaten canned then you may have to transition him from dry to canned, but if he was doing well on a particular dry food, and prefers it, then give him that. It just sounds like you have an unhappy, stressed cat and the pooping on the bed is just a symptom. I think the first thing you have to do is put up some type of barrier and keep him out of the room so that he can't continue the behavior. It's just like the routine he had of going in the bathroom sink......preventing access is crucial in breaking the pattern of what is becoming a habit. Carefully observe everything in your home to try to determine what could be upsetting your cat. It seems something changed during the 6 months after your move since he apparently had no problems before the move. Check below for info re: transition from dry to canned food. What about gymboree or some other indoor place that has kids gym or music classes? There is also a place near us that's a large warehouse that sells playground equipment. They have a few different "rooms" that are their showrooms and they parties as well.

Is it warm where you are? Could everyone just meet at a local park for the party. Playground parties are loads of fun. There's a new handicaped accessible park near my home that is a very popular place for parties since some of the equipment is novel.

I'd suggest having it at home also. Once you get started on these toddler parties, you end up being invited to every one and you have to buy a present too. It gets expensive very quickly.

Could you possibly temporarily remove furniture from maybe the living room, dining room or child's bedroom to make more room? I think an indoor camping theme might be fun (without the sleepover). You could make tents out of sheets and blankets and have the kids play in there. Any other theme you might have going, like bugs or Elmo could be worked into it too. You could have hot chocolate and other appropriate foods. Fake foliage and stuffed animals could be used to dress up the area.

I'm suggesting this because someone gave my two boys a play tent for Christmas and they love it. They'll take toys in there sometimes and play instead of running around the house.

Personally, I gave my 2 year old a relatively big party. We used the tiled conference room of our complex (easy clean-up and didn't have to worry about breakage). But I did have to put together a whole theme. One Mom I know used the same theme for the 2nd and 3rd birthday--a soft, gymboree like room. Only the expense isn't there, because it's in the county rec center. She rented one of the rooms for cake and ice cream, and the soft room for an hour of running and jumping fun. It was really good for "cross ages" (2-7 year olds) since development wasn't an issue (and it was very much an issue in my own theme party). Good luck!

I agree with the other posters about the merits of a simple small-scale at-home or playground party and save the money now because as your little one gets older the parties will get more elaborate and more expensive. But I can totally understand wanting to have it elsewhere with no mess and no fuss.

Gymboree and The Little Gym are good options for 2-year olds. Another option is checking into local gymnastics schools. If they offer recreational Mommy-me classes for 2-year olds, they might handle parties for kids that age too.

Another idea, although I agreee with keeping it small and at home as ideal. But as a preschool teacher for young two-year-olds (meaning the just-turned twos, since obviously ALL 2yos are YOUNG!) I think you can't go wrong with wither moving out the furniture and making it a pretend campout, or as another possibility, do you have a Tumblebus or other mobile gymbus? Or could you rent a big jumpoline for the day?

I'm sure by now you've had your party. I disagree with at home parties being easier. I think they are much more work & you have to clean up before & after & ther is allot of planning & space issues to content with & possibly weather issues. I think after food & papergoods & loot bags & games & prizes, etc. the price isn't all that much different, especially if you are going to have some sort of entertainment at home (had Clifford come for her 1st bdy). I had my 2 yr old bdy party at a petting zoo, which did pony rides & let them hold baby animals & it was awesome for the kids - that age & older & the parents too.
