A question about Learning disorders.. Long.. Sorry

My four year old son, was born 6 weeks early. We have been through 3 sets of PE tubes, and at one point for about 8 months he couldn't hear so he signed. He now hears on a normal level, thank goodness. He is in pre-school and he what the daycare says is showing signs of Austim, or maybe ADD or is it ADH ? BTY I am a working mom so he goes to the local school for Pre-K and then is bused to a Day Care until I get off work. He had a rough week at Pre-K, would only play by his self, cried a lot for no reason, "zoning out" and turning in circles, or running in circles. He calls all the adults Teacher because he really doesn't seem to understand they have a name. He has never been able to tell me the names of any of the children in any class he has been in. He can count to 10 but yet if you give him ten pennies he can't count them. This has been the way he has acted from day one, but the note from his teacher said it was 10 worse than normal. He can't tell you what he has done in school or daycare. For example what he had for lunch. I found out by accident. He knows the Pledge, that they say every morning by heart. But Friday at day care, she asked all the children to pick up, and he fell to the floor screaming and hitting his self. She said it was far more than just a child being upset and it scared her so bad at how he was hitting himself that she almost called 911. He has done this 3 other times, not quite as bad. Before this I just assumed it was my child "throwing a fit" as my grandmother would say. But now I am worry, I have left messages for his Pre-K teacher to call me at work or home and she won't return my calls. So, who do you call or where do I start to find out if he in just normal or needs help.
Thank for your time and any advice you can give

Sherry

I would hesitate to call his behavior entirely normal. It is the degree of behavior that is troublesome. As his teacher stated..."it is more than just a child being upset" She has seen that normal type of "upset" and can tell the difference. You need to confer with his pediatrician, and then ask for some sort of testing program. It may be that with the trouble that he has had in the past, that his hearing is defective in some manner making him frustrated.

Don't wait. the sooner you get a handle on the problem, the sooner you will be able to help him
Good luck

From what you describe, his behavior does not seem to be normal. I would take this seriously, since the school mentioned he is showing signs of autism- once you have been around autistic children it is pretty easy to see the signs. You could go to your pediatrician and get a referral for an evaluation. You could also go through your local school system but I don't recommend that. The earlier kids with these sorts of problems get treatment the better the treatment works. Good Luck!

My three year old son has some similar problems and it turns out he has Sensory Integration Disorder, which is similar to autism. It is a central nervous system disorder that affects the way he processes sensory input.

I live in Texas and Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) diagnosed him with DSI about a year ago. You might read the book "The Out-of-Sync Child" to see if some of the symptoms are similar to what your child is experiencing.

My son has been getting occupational therapy and has made AMAZING Progress!

Good Luck! Beth

Do you have some type of program like Beth suggested in your area? My son was born 8 weeks premature and the dr's got me in touch with the Infant Evaluation Program in our area. A lady came to our house once a month until Shane was about 4 months old. She measured differnt things he was doing and making sure he was on track with other kids. If he wasn't, she tried to teach me things to do to get him to do them. In most instances he'd start doing the things a week later with no help and that was fine since most kids aren't right with the chart. I know this program was also for older children and they had more to it, like counselors who could do a whole evaluation of your child and tell you where they were on the charts and what needed to be worked on and developed in more detail. This type of program might be able to help you with your son. It's hard for a teacher to really pay attention to all those kids and they can't really diagnose things because they aren't a doctor. Good luck.
