Put a booster seat on Layaway~too early?

We were at Wal-Mart on Saturday and saw that they had a booster seat that was marked for $30 and put it on layaway. The box says for 22-80 lbs. DS weighs about 35lbs or more (not positive right now) He'll be 3 in April. He fits in his car seat but we figured if he's getting to be big enough for a booster and all that, why not move up. The thing is that I stood there starring at this seat thinking it wasn't enough, that it only uses the regualr seat belt. Am I crazy? Am I just worrying because I'm used the the seat with all the belts and straps and bars? I found the seat on the Wal-Mart site and it's made by Cosco. I think I remember seeing Voyager on the box but I could be wrong because the W-M ad doesn't tell you which model it is. Are we crazy to buy this? We could get it now because it's a good deal and not use it for a few months. Anyone have any advice?

At that age, he is getting too big for the baby seat. So if you don't put him on the booster seat, what are you going to do? Do you have any other choice besides just the regular seat belt? Some parents just put the child on a pillow with the regular seat belt. It works. All the booster does is raise the child so that she can see out the window better. I don't know if it is supposed to be safer or not. They may come with additional belting but I doubt it.

I think maybe I'm just scared, or worried or can't believe he's already for a booster and that's all! I guess I also just expected that there was more to the booster seats than there is. I do like the newer high back ones better than the older ones and I think he'll love his new big boy seat! ~Leslie~

Leslie- A friend of mine was just shopping for a booster seat- she was able to find one, I believe made by Graco or evenflo (?) that does have built in restraints. personally, I wouldn't feel like something that was just a 'booster' was enough either. my DS is just turning 3 in the end of Jan and is about 35 lbs, like your son. I think those seats are made for larger, taller kids. Also, I've heard that since they just 'sit' on your car seat (of course, buckled in over the top) they seem much more likely to slip if they're sitting on a carseat that's not really compatable (bench vs bucket, etc.) might be something to look into, since it won't be sinched down and will only be really held in place by your sons weight.

DD is 4 and 38 pounds, and uses booster seat, but she uses the one with the 3-point harness (it can be converted to the one you show in the pic when she gets big enough).

I think he will be fine...But just don't move him into it, until he has completely grown out of his "convertible" seat. It has the seat belt guides on it, to assure proper fit. You might also want to look into those seat belt adjusters, that just fit on the seat belt. That should snug it down a bit more, so that he won't decide to "slip" out on his own. |
