Big Toddler need a new car seat.....HELP!!!!!

My son is 3 and looks like a 5 year old he wears size 5 clothes and has a 12 double wide foot but is not a chunky kid....NY law says he must be in a car seat yet I am basically fighting with the 5 point harness to clip it in and it at its last extension...he and I are not happy campers. I went to babies r us and the only one the sales boy had was 250 plus dollars!!! Is anyone aware of a BIG TODDLER CAR SEAT??? All I find is booster type where you use your own car belt. I called my local police and they said a booster is technically NOT acceptable. Suggestions please TIA

Babies R Us is usually way over priced for this kind of stuff or only offer the more expensive ones. Do you have a Target, Walmart, K-Mart something similar you can check out? May even look at Amazon.

What about a booster car seat. A lot of those look like a infant/toddler car seat, but are bigger.

This one even has a 5 point harness.

Thanks everyone for your insights. Over the last 29 years, between DH & I, we've had 10 Fords. Every one has lasted 10+ years and the lowest mileage one we had when traded was 135,000. I think this 2002 Taurus is just a "dud" but I've had 3 other Taurus' since 1986 & had excellent records. I had a 1989 Ford Explorer that ran over 200K miles & 13 years. I sold it for $2,000 when I bought the current Taurus and some college kid is probably still delivering pizzas in it! And the love of my life was my 1983 red Thunderbird - DH and I traded it back and forth for 13 years, until our 2nd son was born and the back seat was way too small for 2 car seats. My mechanic gave me a good insight on the "gas guzzler" Crown Vic when I discussed with him what he would buy if he were looking for a used car and had less than $10K to spend. He said he'd go for a full size sedan becuase they still get around 20 mpg, and cost around &8 to $10K. If I kept the car for 6 years, and gas even went back to $4 a gallon, I'd still spend way less total than buying a small car for $14K or more. Plus with 3 unusually tall boys, a small car just won't fit us. He said his top pic for a used sedan would be a Nissan Maxima but it's just not big enough for us. I am very hard on cars - I only live 3 miles from work and most days drive 10 miles or less of 'stop at every corner' type driving. That's really hard on a car, so if my Fords have lasted 135,000 or miles or more, it's like double that in highway miles. I will most likely buy another Ford, mostly because of my good experience up to now, and also because Ford is in better financial condition and will be around to honor any warranty. I know intellectually that I should get rid of this car before it blows, but emotionally I'm just not sure I am ready to spend the $$ on a "new" car. Every time I say I'm going to look at cars, I come up with an excuse not to. I just took 2 weeks off work and had several days with no plans, but never managed to make it to look at cars. I live right in the city & near a major business corridor with 5 or 6 dealerships in a 5 mile stretch, but still can't seem to make it over there!

No great words of wisdom for you, but a couple of thoughts. For my older boys we bought the older one a subaru wrx and middle one a used saab 9-3. While they both have been amazingly trouble free, when they do need work the things that are wrong need to go the dealer and it's been expensive. In particular with the Saab - they don't sell them anymore so parts are pricey and hard to come by - some impossible. That said, son #3 now has his temps and I've decided he can only buy American or Honda or Toyota. Looking at a several year old Ford Escape with AWD - not real sexy, but safe and functional. I personally love a new car, and have leased my last two vehicles. I drive them three years and take them back! My DH is a drive to the ground guy, actually takes pride in how many miles he can get out of a car. I believe BMW includes all the maintenance on their cars so you have to factor in those fees you'll also have to pay on a different car that probably will need some work. I'd keep the BMW, cancel the collision insurance on the Jeep since it's so old, and buy the girls a decent enough car that it will last at least 6 years. I think the 2010+ Fords are all good quality, and reasonably priced. I like the Ford Fusion. I also am a huge fan of Honda Accords and Civics. You should be able to find a fairly decent one for under $10,000. Goodluck, teen drivers are not for the faint of heart.

I agree with those who say that this is just a normal stage. For some bizarre reason, in this country we expect our children to grow up and be independent at a ridiculously early age when in reality they still need quite a bit for the first several years of their life. I have found that understanding that something is normal and OK is the first step to coping with it and even ENJOYING it. New moms (and I still consider myself a "new mom" with a 17 month old, everything he does that is new is new to me too!) are constantly bombarded with advice and images of the way things SHOULD be - and of course if they are NOT that way, then you don't have a "good baby" - and if you don't have a "good baby" then who is to blame but mommy??? And 14 months may be a "toddler" officially, but he's still just a baby, who cannot express his needs any other way but by crying and clinging to who he wants - and I do believe that the emotional need of closeness to mommy is a need like any other physical need. I believe it goes back to birth and who the baby bonded with stronger - and assuming mom is the one who took maternity leave and was home longer with him, that's going to be mom. So rather than trying to explain away his behavior as something that must be "gotten over" I would advise your DIL to love every cuddle - to not worry if she can't get the housework done or whatever. Soon enough he will push her away when she wants a hug because he will not want to be taken away from whatever he's doing and she will be wondering where her affectionate little boy went. As far as what to say to Dad - that's always a tough one, especially with newer generations of dads who take a much more active involvement in their kids at a younger age than previous generations did as a whole. It sounds like Henry is not opposed to being with dad, just has a strong preference for mom when both are around. My little guy is like that lately too and what I tend to do is sit down with all three of us doing an activity and then when he is really interested in what he is doing, get up and leave. I don't sneak away but I don't make a big production over leaving either. Sometimes I just leave the house entirely and go spend an hour or two BY MYSELF (ah heaven). It usually takes him a couple of hours to notice I am even gone and go looking for me and then another hour or so after that to start to get cranky that I haven't come back yet - but if I am around it's "MOMMY MOMMY MOMMY" (he is starting to talk now and it's his new favorite word ;) - which is nice after 16 months of "Daddy" for everything!) But above all your son should not take it personally. By natural design for the sake of survival, babies and young children are totally self absorbed and can only deal with what THEY need. He is not behaving this way to hurt dad, he is behaving this way because he needs mom. It doesn't mean he doesn't love daddy, it just means that daddy does not meet that particular need at that moment in time. And tell him not to even think about what other kids are doing. It doesn't matter one bit to your child, so why should it matter to him? Kids do things at their own pace and on their own schedule - at least mine does. He does not do anything on millisecond before he is ready - but when he finally is ready, watch out world! DH is an extremely loving and involved father and I'm sure it bugs him when my son pushes away from him and wants me but he understands and doesn't take it personally. Sometimes he does get into a funk about it but we just talk about it and work through it. And as with all other things involving kids "this too shall pass."

well, I tried to use my new skinny key this weekend, for the first time--and it doesn't work. Apparently there's some sort of passive security ignition cut-off in the electronic key that tells the car it's OK to turn on. I will * have* to use the big key, I think. Now I'm going to really have to think about this. My car-key situation is probably VERY different from most of yours. We own a car, but we do NOT use it daily. *I* only use it once a week. On Sundays, coming home from church, usually (not even going there). So that's ONE TRIP in which I actually use my key. About one other time a week, I *ride* in the car, so it would be useful to have my key w/ me in case we need to switch drivers. So carrying the key w/ me all the time, as I've done in the past, seems like an a pain in the neck now that it's so huge. However, if I keep the key separately, it'll be much more likely to get lost, or for me to forget to bring it with me. And it'll be two objects to keep track of. Maybe I can try out the idea of leaving it in the bottom of my purse, under my wallet. If it's flat enough. Then it'll be with me (I might go out back in the garden of our apt. complex w/o my wallet, but I'd never go in the car, to the store, etc., without it). I used to keep my loose change int he bottom of my purse, but w/ this purse, there's a little side pocket, and I put my change in there. (I honestly think this key would be too big for that side pocket, it's so huge!) I agree, Chris--they have deficient design teams. But I'd think the GUYS would be the ones complaining about a too-huge key because they're the ones who put it in their pockets, and would be ripping their pockets out w/ these huge things.

I think the boosters are generally made for 4 yrs old and up... and even when 4, my doctor recommends the other seats with 5 point harnesses are used instead of just boosters for safety. What's bad is, that it's sometimes hard to find a seat that fits a kid over 40 lbs. that's not a booster or where the 5 point harness can be worn comfortably on a bigger kid.

I personally would not put a three year old in just a booster seat even if the law provides for it with weight limits, unless you really can not find anything else. Plus, it sounds like in New York maybe it's not even legal if you're still three. Here a think a kid can use a booster if he's 4 OR 40 lbs, but like I said my Dr. thinks the other seats are way safer.

A booster seat is out of question (Laws) as I need a 5 harness and all that I come across hes to tall for so you can snap it between the crotch area. I see that Walmart is to soon carry one online but they have no info as too when.

I know you're dealing with more of a a height problem, but I'm having a hard time finding a 5 point harness for kids that weigh over 40 lbs. It seems like most of the convertible seats stop using them at that weight limit. I'm actually beginning to wonder if my doctor knew what he was talking about. He seemed shocked when I told him my 5 point harness seat only goes up to 40 lbs. and thought mine was more of a baby seat -- which it is not.

If you see any ones that can use the 5 point harness over 40 lbs will you let me know? Thanks.

I found a car seat!!! The brand is COSCO sold at Target for 49.99 has a 5 point harness and holds up to I think 80 pounds...bought it a he fits in it beautifully!!!

Glad that you found one. Hopefully, they'll have it at my Target. You don't know the specific name of the Cosco seat by chance? like Cosco Seanna or Cosco Literra, etc... Thanks

That's this carseat. Looks good for a big toddler. It's probably the Cosco Juvenile.

But that one's just really a booster seat after 40 lbs. -- you can even tell by the name description. You can only wear the 5 point harness up to 40 lbs.-- since it's convertible it just becomes a booster seat then. I'm looking for one where the harness can be worn over 40 lbs. My doctor swears they exist... I am beginning to think he's crazy. All I'm finding are those convertible booster types like you noted. I'm not sure what people are supposed to do with heavy 3 yr olds in the states when they aren't allowed in boosters legally until they're 4. I can legally put my kid in a booster, but I would prefer the 5 point harness thing if they exist... Thanks anyway.

This one has a 5 point harness that seems to fit up to 65 pounds. It's not cheap, but it looks like it does what you need. Good luck

Thanks, it sounds like that is the kind my doctor must be talking about!!! So, he's not totally crazy! I did find a different one that fits at Amazon for $300... so this one is way better priced than that. I just hope they have that one in stock at my store. I guess I can always do an in store order with WalMart. Thanks again for finding it; I wasn't having much luck.

Glad to help. My daughter and I were looking for booster seats with a 5 point harness this weekend when I was visiting. My grandson is very tall and she'll be having a problem soon. She wanted some options now, before the new baby comes in a few months.

That Graco looks like the one I bought at Target I got rid of the box but they have it on display in the baby dept its blue if that helps..and works great

The Graco Nautilus is a great seat--it will be the last one you need to buy. There is also the Sunshine Kids Radian65 but it is not as versatile as the Graco model--it is great if you have limited car space because I believe it is narrower.

Good luck finding the new Nautilus.

I highly recommend the Graco Nautilus. It has a 5 point harness for up to 60 pounds. Also you can raise the head rest (very easily ) as your child gets taller. I think it's around $150-200 but it's well worth it. Hope this helps!
