diapers/wipes?

I bought a package of Pampers' "Newborn Swaddlers" for a shower gift for a friend. They were really cute - even had the cut out for the umbilical cord - until I noticed the diapers themselves (not the wipes) had alcohol in them! Has anyone noticed this? I took them back, thinking surely that isn't good for little baby's bottom! Much less the umbilical cord area. In the end I bought some alcohol-free wipes and thought I'd let the mother decide on diapers.

I tried to find something else in exchange but found that all major brands, with the exception of Huggies, have alcohol in them. There is another ingredient in Huggies that I have never heard of - perhaps it's a substitute for alcohol. No wonder babies get rashes and dry skin - these companies are probably out to get more of your money through their additional products!

Has anyone's child reacted adversely from this? Or is it just a trace ingredient?

My DD has very sensitive skin (food allergies, but when she was newborn we had no idea what it was). We used generics when she was breast-fed/formula only, and they worked fine. But after food was introduced, and the messes got messier, they were no longer adequate, and she would get such a rash. I tried all the brands, and at the time, Pampers Premium was the only one that didn't irritate her little bottom. I never noticed alcohol because I never thought of diapers as having 'ingredients'. I was going to email them and ask, but their web page Q&A wants too much personal info and I don't need to get on any more mailing lists LOL

I think most wipes have things in them that people aren't aware of. Also, they tend to give you wipe things to wipe the umbilical cord and I believe they are alcohol wipes. Babies are all different. What may bother one may not bother another. I know MIL said that her one son was allergic to all disposible diapers so they had to use cloth. My DS could never use the generics as a baby because he got a rash so we stuck with Huggies because we liked the velcro. My nephew is 3 months old and Luv's give him a rash. Same can go with wipes. Some bother kids, others don't. So really anything you may buy for a baby, whether it be diapers or bottles or pacifiers or clothing, may be something the kid doesn't like or can't handle. You don't know until you try it...

BTW~alcohol in the wipes may be what makes them so great to clean up messes with! We've found that they remove pen, marker and even crayon from walls and other places...

My son has a similar rash from time to time. Now that he's a little older, he'll communicate that he has a "boo boo" on his tooshie. When this happens, instead of irritating it and using diaper wipes, I'll give him a bath with a little baking soda in the water. After the bath, we found a product called Bordeaux's Butt Paste, we slather that on and add a little baby power on top of that, and amazingly the rash will diappear within the next couple of diaper changes. I have tried to track exactly what's causing the rash and it seems to appear when he drinks fruit juices. He doesn't seem to have any issues wuth fresh fruit, so I know it must be something that's being added to the juice.

Thank you all so much for your kind comments and advice!! We have picked a name but aren't sharing it until the baby boy is here. I don't know anything about birth annoucements. When do you send them out and all that good stuff? I noticed most of the ones online are photo announcements, but that means I can't pre-order/address them until the baby is here, right? We still need to find some stuff for the walls in the baby's room. We painted the letters of his name for the shelf above the changing table. Other than that, the walls are currently bare, but we don't want to be hooked into the turtle theme forever, so I'm looking for more abstract/versatile stuff. :) Thanks to all again for the advice!!

Got Keisha's "Princess" quilt finished-YEAH! Will try to post a pic sometime this week. Also got Candace's top finished but there's a problem. The top won't stay flat. It was okay before I added the borders. Thanks for keeping me on track, suellen. Now, as someone else once said on one of these posts--if only I could get on track with other non-quilting areas. You might search through some of the Facebook pages for schools and churches if you are inclined to donate, but want the money to where it can do the most good. My area had several shelters. Our area wasn't hit as hard so there were more donations and volunteers than the shelters could handle. We're not religious and don't attend church. The churches are organized as gathering spots to help. My son and his friends went where they could help. They volunteered at both a Catholic and a Baptist church. They were able to go into several people's houses and help bring out stuff and dump it on the curb. The church had three meals a day that they served. The church does have a kitchen they maintain. I know I saw breakfast burritos and fruit one day. The kids said someone brought them 'really good' bbq sandwiches one day. Another day it was a sack lunch with a sandwich, fruit cup chips and a dessert. Another day a local restaurant provided lunch. They didn't eat the breakfast or the supper meal. The kids spent a couple of days helping with carrying in donations and sorting them. One of the kids helped people shop and take food and other supplies to the cars. The donations are being used in a productive way to get help the people who need help. Even if you aren't religious, a specific church fund would be a good way to help. The kids went back to school yesterday. There are about 20,000 displaced children and teachers in the district. Each area has their own district. My kids each had at least one or two teachers who were flooded. The district has asked for donations of money to be used at their discretion to fill the needs of these people. You might look for affected school districts in Florida because they will know who needs help the most. They can help these kids get back packs, schools supplies, food for at home or proper shoes. Today I saw a request for homecoming dresses. I've seen more requests for food the last couple of days. I've also seen requests for mops, buckets, cleaning supplies, bleach, masks, gloves, rubber boots, and tarps. People need boxes and plastic tubs for whatever they can salvage. I don't know if someone in your area is taking a trailer full of goods down. These appear to be what the people need as they get back to their homes and start cleaning up the mess and they appear to be in shorter supply.

They're making alcohol-free wipes now, I've noticed. I did buy some of those. If those ingredients are harsh to our skin, I can't imagine what they'd do to some poor kid. But I never figured the diapers themselves would have it. Since Huggies doesn't, maybe that's why your baby's skin didn't react?

Actually, I think it has more to do with everything that goes into the diapers and wipes and how they're meant to work. It doesn't just mean that he was allergic to the alcohol in the diapers or whatever...it could be any number of things. Not all products are made the same and honestly, I never read what went into diapers to make them...just used them. It could also have been because some diapers are made to asorb more and others don't that caused his problems. And honestly, it could have just been a fluke but I quit using those diapers after that just because I wasn't going to risk spending money on something he couldn't use.
