Baby Shower Help

I am in need of some assistance. My brother's S.O. is expecting twins in Sept and they have asked me to host the shower. She has a son from a prior relationship and they have a daughter that just had her 1st birthday. I have never hosted a shower before and this is only the 2nd I will have attended (their daughter's being the first one)

My questions are numerous. I know that I want to have it in the afternoon, but from there I am clueless. They seem to have about everything from Trevr's and Kalli's showers. Also, they live 3 hrs from me but are close to her family so our family will be traveling from distances of at least 3 hrs (me) to 7 hrs (our parents). What would anyone suggest?

If they already have essential items like clothes and beds, you could have either have a diaper shower or a food shower. For the food shower, everyone brings a casserole dish to be frozen until after the baby, gives a coupon to be redeemed for a home cooked meal, or a gift certificate for take-out food.

You might also check to see if there are baby items that need to be replaced. For instance, the baby swing may not work anymore or the couple may need new car seats or at least a second one for the two babies.

Another idea I saw on tv was for people to bring their good hand-me-downs. It was sort of a recycle party where people pass on baby clothes or the bouncy chair to someone who needs it. The couple in this particular tv episode had given away all of their baby stuff because they hadn't planned on another child.

Since it sounds like family members are attending, I'm assuming you'll have guys and gals there. You have several possibilities - I think a cookout would be a fun idea, but a pot-luck with other family members might be more economical for you. Another idea would be to have some sort of cake and dessert party or high tea. Since this is for family members, I don't think it'd be wrong to ask other close family members (yours or the other side) to bring a dish. Definitly, ask other family members in the more immediate area for help.

My first thougth was...if they have a child together, why does she need another shower? Usually a shower is given for the first baby, or if there is quite an age difference between babies.

Other than that I have no suggestions.

I just had a baby shower for my daughter. We passed around ribbon and each guest cut one as long as they thought they needed to go around my daughter's tummy. Was fun to actually measure them and we saved the pieces of ribbon that they cut. Each person signed their piece of ribbon too and we saved them for her babybook! I made some premade scrapbooking pages that would include pieces of advice from each person attending. When I sent out the invites, I included the small cards for them to think of something to write to the baby or my daughter...advice for them! Something that my daughter and her daughter can look over whenever they want. A great way to include the guests/friends into her baby scrapbook! I bought some "babies" made out of blankets and sleepers on Ebay and they were adorable. The theme was Sugar and Spice, everything nice.....and it was worked into the menu.....lots of sweet(small cakes, molded mints, etc) and even some spicey appetizers! And almost everything was PINK! Just was fun! And of course...........LOTS of pictures! Just a wonderful memory made.......and expressions of support for my daughter! I hope you had fun.......and that YOU had time to enjoy it all! There's no trick to it. It firms up on its own as it cools. I've had success by nuking frosting at 50% in 5 second increments until it's just barely just liquified. I test by stirring. It only needs to be warm enough to be dip-able. In my mind, (your mileage may vary) warming the frosting in a shallow, flat-bottomed container, barely bigger than your cubes, would be less messy than pouring... you could dip one side at a time, and if you worked quickly, your finger marks in the frozen cake would fall out as it cooled. I learned this trick from an awesome book I bought my niece and nephew for Christmas. They describe the technique on pages 18 & 19, which you can see by clicking on the "search inside this book" link, entering the work "microwave" in the search pane, selecting the second search result, and turning to page 19 with the right hand arrow. (For the record, the book is way fun!) I tried this dipping technique with cupcake frosting and the results were so flawless that the ladies I served them to assumed I'd done something very difficult and fancy. The punchline was that it took less time to dip (from scratch) cupcakes into warmed white Duncan Heinz frosting (with a bit of yellow food coloring and lemon extract added) than it would have taken to frost by the traditional method. The frosting firmed up a bit and they looked beautiful. This book also demonstrates a stupid-simple technique of drawing a design on a paper template, slipping the template on wax paper, melting some colored wafers, spooning them into a ziploc, cutting a tiny hole in the corner, and drawing on the wax paper. My DIL is blessing me with my first grandchild in early June. Her mom is in England and I am hosting the shower(s). First thing I did was split the guest list in 2--one for my family and my husband's (complete families, not just women) and the other my friends, DIL friends and DIL very small family (4 women). About 50 at each event. It's in my backyard and I've rented a tent, tables and chairs that will stay up for the two consecutive weekends. For the family shower the food will be a combination of appetizers and hot food in chafing dishes. People on both sides have volunteered to bring dishes so there isn't too much work involved. For the Friends shower, the food will be finger foods, salads and wraps. Depending on the amount of gifts involved, I'll organize it like her bridal shower--she'll open about 1/3, then we'll break for the meal. Then 1/3 more and break for dessert. Then the rest. I don't expect the men to watch the gift opening, they'll probably wander around with the kids during that time. We did a cute thing at the bridal shower you may want to consider. I found a poem on the internet that told a story of young love using lots of product names (. . . their FUTURE was BRITE . . .). As the poem was read, the person who had that product sitting at their seat stood up, introduced themself to the group (I'm Carol, Danny's favorite aunt, I'm Danielle, Alicia's best friend from kindergarden), and gave the product to the bride who collected them in a big laundry basket. At the wedding, people had an idea of who was who and which side of the couple they were on. You could do something like that with baby products.

I know a few really fun games. 1)Guess that baby food. Use a disposible plate that you can write on. Section it off in however many flavors you want to use and number each section, one plate is prepared for each guest. Put spoonful of babyfood on each section and have your guests try and name that flavor. You can have guests write it down on paper/with corresponing number. ie: 1)bananna, 2)pear... and then have someone announce the flavors to see how many people guessed right. Its really funny! 2)You can do this casually during party. Pass around a ball of string/cord. Just cotton/or kite string or whatever you have that works. Have each guest cut off a length that they think will fit around moms belly. Whoever gets the closest wins. You do have to have mom stand there while each person sees if their string comes the closest to the correct circumference. You do need a good sense of humor for this one!

I just want to say, when people want to GIVE a shower, or to give presents, it's perfectly OK for the guests of honor to participate.

In some families, it's just a nice way to welcome the second or third kid! You'll have to gauge your own family's reaction to yet another baby shower. There are people who'll feel they way Vickey_MN does--that another shower seems greedy, or presumptuous; that they've already given a gift, enough already.

Other families will response generously. Or they'll respond in a more lighthearted, less expensive way.

And also note, this is TWINS! There are families who would be so cognizant of the increased need that having TWO babies at once brings, that they'd leap and the chance to provide extra baby clothes, extra strollers/car-seat combos, etc.
