| My sister told me that when she had her first child she received a most unusual gift from a much older neighbor woman. This woman had mothered 6 children and had been very supportive of my sister with all her 'new mom' questions and emotional ups and downs during pregnancy. But she wasn't quite sure how to respond when she received this gift. Then two months after the birth as things began to settle down into a routine she found the gift to be the most valuable she'd received.
I've linked to it below if you'd like a peek. It is a hammock-like sling that can be used indoors that cradles both mom and baby like a cocoon. The gentle swinging motion and weightlessness was the perfect antidote for the months my sister had carried all that weight around. The only thing better was the sensation of weightlessness when floating in water. She would lie in the sling and fall into a deep sleep. She would lounge in with the baby when it was time to breast feed. She and the baby would sit in it for naps and bedtime letting the gentle swinging lull them to sleep.
Her child is now a three year old toddler who begs to take her naps in the "sing" (sling). The feeling is like being cradled or embraced. And often Mommy or Daddy will join her and 'sing-song' (sing songs), read books, share stories from their day, etc. It is THE soft place to fall. Surely it has made for some fond memories.
And from this idea grew the idea to purchase an outdoor stretchy-type hammock chair that is also like a cocoon where they have spent many hours under a shady tree. That one as a swivel and the kids love to get in it and be twirled around!
Anyway, I was talking with her the other day and she mentioned the swing and what a great gift it had been. And it has kept on giving. So I thought I'd plant that idea here.
