ugh! Cole's fussiness the past few days is crazy! He's not wanting to nap longer than 20-30 minutes every couple of hours, and is cranky/tooty the rest of the time (gas drops don't help). Gotta be either the inability to sleep on his back or the addition of cereal to his diet this week (Dr. said he needs the iron/is too pale).

He's now 4 1/2 months old. When we started solids (pureed vegetable) a couple of weeks ago, his poopies decreased, but his mood didn't change too much. Then, about the same time, he started rolling over from tummy to back. He sleeps on his tummy, so he's unhappy/not a good sleeper on his back. Sometimes, he'll stay on his side and sleep a good hour or two.

I'm just wondering if any of you have experiences in this area. . . Please share!

Hi Tyra & Cole!!

Did you start first with rice cereal? That is what we are doing right now w/ Logan and he loves it. I haven't tried baby food yet, but I wonder if Cole is having an allergy/reaction to the food you are giving him. Logan is the same and will NOT sleep on his back! He has been rolling from back to stomach for quite a while, but in the past few days has started rolling from stomach to back. Once I went in b/c he was screaming during his afternoon nap and he had rolled onto his back and couldn't fall back asleep!

Maybe he is starting to teeth and the pain from his gums is waking him up. Sounds like his fussiness might be b/c he is tired b/c he is not getting enough sleep. That also happened w/ Logan (these two have a lot in common!) and we would apply a little baby orajel and it would many times calm him enough to fall back asleep. Also, sometimes before bed I would give him a small dose of children's Tylenol and that would help him sleep. About 2 weeks ago, Logan started waking up every 1-2 hours throughout the middle of the night, and I had just started back to work part time. I was going crazy! Well, I decided to let him cry himself to sleep after the advice of many other mommies and literally after 2 days he was sleeping soooo much better! I used to have to rock him to sleep standing up before every nap and at bedtime, sometimes taking up to an hour. It was so tiring. Now, he goes to bed about 8pm and I just put him in his crib after he eats and he looks around and whines for about 10-15 minutes, never really cries, and then he is out for the night. Sometimes he will wake in the middle of the night and stir, and I just let him. I think that he has gotten used to the idea of falling asleep on his own and it has made mommy, daddy and baby all much happier!

Sorry if I got off on another subject, but I just wanted to let you know of my experiences since our babies are so close(I mean exact!) in age.

Tyra,

You may want to try a different kind of cereal like the baby oatmeal. It should have the same amount of iron, but it will keep him more regular. He may be having some tummy troubles from the rice cereal.

As far as him rolling onto his back and then not being able to sleep, our DD kinda went through that too, only it was the opposite for her. She would roll onto her tummy and then get mad. Anyway, it did affect her sleep for a week or two until she kinda got used to the feeling of being where she did not want to be.

If he is really cranky too, I would definitely check for teeth coming in. He is prime age for them to start popping in. If you can see anything you may want to try some Tylenol. That really helped our DD rest and just not be such a crab when her teeth were bothering her.

Hang in there. Keep us posted if anything new comes up or you figure out the mystery fussiness. ;-)

***"Contaminants and moisture should already be entrained in the oil, shouldn't it?"*** To a degree, yes. Contaminants will be entrained during operation of the engine and circulation of the lube oil. Moisture is a "transient" contaminant with a short life span. Even though the H2O is "transient", some of the moisture will re-combine with other components of combustion even while still in the combustion chamber (prior to being "blown-by". These compounds are NOT TRANSIENT and will remain in solution in the oil where they will become acid and attack the oil and engine surfaces. Actual moisture is introduced to the crankcase lube oil in 2 ways. Most of the moisture gets into the crankcase as a component in the blow-by gasses during cold start up. The water is one by product of the combustion process. The other, and "lesser" way is from the natural humidity of the inducted air. The "inducted air" moisture gets to the crankcase lube oil as a component of blow-by, but also in the air that is "fed" to the engine to ventilate the crankcase (PCV system). The moisture is only able to mix with the lube oil when the engine surfaces and the oil mass are cold. After the engine and oil mass heat up, most of the moisture is "driven out" of the oil. The evaporated moisture will be drawn out of the crankcase by the PCV system and be sent back through the induction system again where it can be expelled out the exhaust. High temps are the determining factor in keeping the moisture "out of solution" or "out of emulsion" in the lube oil. Even though the contaminants are in suspension during operation of the engine, as soon as the engine stops and the majority of the oil drains to the sump, STRATIFICATION of the liquid begins to happen. During stratification, the heavy, solid particles settle to the bottom of the sump first. After that, the liquid components of the oil begin to separate into distinct layers, or "strata", according to the specific gravity of each component of the blend. The longer the time at rest, the more complete will be the settling process. The "more used" or older the oil is, the faster the solids will settle too. ***"Sludge is another thing, and again I doubt you'll get much more of that by running the motor. The oil pump isn't going to pull it off the bottom of the pan (at least you'll hope not) and you'll pretty much have to remove the pan to clean it out....or run some solvent thru your motor first."*** The sludge is formed ONLY WHEN the oil in the crankcase has remained in service for too long. Oil that has been in service too long, has lost most of its additive package to heat and contamination from blow-by. When good oil is fresh or new, hardly any settling or stratification occurs (unless the engine is 'off" for a very long time). During the time after fresh new oil is put in an engine, practically everything the oil has "picked up", remains in suspension. If the engine has always had "timely" oil changes, and has always been run long enough after cold starts to drive off moisture, there will be very little (if any) "sludge" in the pan or elsewhere in the engine. As the oil ages and degrades, stratification begins to occur during periods the engine is not running. During this "phase" of the oil's life cycle, any particles that settle (sludge keystones) will be "scrubbed" and swirled back into suspension by the detergent additives in the oil's formula. As these additives grow weaker and thinner with continued use of oil that is degraded (and really no longer fit for service), the "sludge" that forms during "off periods", is more difficult to "remix" in subsequent run periods. So, consider the oil additives as though they are "continuous solvents" that scrub and clean the engine whenever the engine is running. Oil change is good. Fresh oil is good. Vibrant additive package, good. In my opinion.....there is a definite benefit to changing the oil WHILE STILL HOT from a long run time. The "perfect time" to change the oil would be at the end of a 12 hour period of use, immediately after the engine was turned off. Obviously, this is not practcal, so we must try to do the next best thing.

Breathtaking lot and lake. No wonder you bought it. We recently went through the purchase of an ugly duckling too. A younger duckling than yours, from 1987. My kitchen is linked below. We (my DD actually) painted the cabinets, and we added tile counters. Makes a great difference. We also painted all of the bathroom cabinets very similar in style to yours the same color. I have the shell sinks too! We used the new SW alkyd cabinet and door paint, after priming with SW primer first. 1 coat primer 2 coats paint. Laid on with a a brush and rolled off with a small foam roller. (of course need to sand and TSP wash before priming). Turned out great. SW Kestral white is a great wall color to merge beiges, whites, off whites, gray, and almonds together. So that is on the walls in our bathrooms to blend the tub (almond), counters (beige cultured marble) toilet is white, and sheet vinyl in a gray (where it was carpeted too. EWW!) You mentioned your home only has electric baseboard and a single window unit. How is your home constructed? Is there a basement or crawlspace for a forced air gas furnace? Is natural gas available, or propane? An attic for an electric heat air handler? I assume your house has no hvac ductwork and that would need to be added if you modified the heat to forced air. (I work in HVAC). This would mean that you would have some tearup into walls to do this, so definitely do the HVAC before painting any walls, This may give you a good opportunity to add insulation and a vapor barrier to some walls at the same time. And you may need to add some electrical capacity to add AC. I would evaluate this before flooring or walls as the HVAC work may get into the walls or flooring and you would want to do that messy work first. Anything you can do to get off electric heat would most likely be money well spent, as electric heat can be quite expensive to run (of course this depends much on your utility rates.) Adding a nice mid-tier heat pump, with either furnace or air handler and electric heat would be a very good solution for your climate. And improving insulation above ceiling and in walls will make your home more comfortable and lower utility bills too. Onto the decor questions. I would only keep the green tub if you absolutely adore it. If not, I would consider getting it re-glazed if it appears to be a good quality tub. They don't make them as good as they used to IMHO. For the kitchen, I would work on the best layout possible with the constraints of re-using what makes sense. I would paint the cabinets in the kitchen and consider some modifications to get the layout you want. If you paint the cabinets, you would have the option to maybe rip out some if necessary and infill with some shelving or other unfitted pieces. We for example took out a cooktop on the island and put in butcher block. And if you paint your cabinets and need to infill with some from habitat restore or other standard new ones, the paint can make them work together better. #1 advice is to buy a nice new gas grill and get a nice patio set for your deck. When you are happy and can cook dinner and have a cold drink and relax it seems less overwhelming to think about all the other projects. Thanks all....for the compliments on the house and the well wishes. I'm trying to take it slowly (n'dank & n'dank in Wolof) but that's not easy for me :-). In regards to the house, all of the pics were taken prior to my purchase. So the owner's belongings and their love of teal green is apparent. What is not so apparent was the amount of crap (both literally and figuratively) they had stored away. When this house first came on the market, I said to myself, "There is no way you can afford it. It's already a bit past my price range, and it's so cute, it will go in a bidding war" (also because the neighborhood school is one of the best in the state). That's when my RE agent called and told me about the broker open house and the zoo that was the basement and DR. And, so, 8 months later, the house is empty, the kitchen and bath are down to the studs, and I'm planning its rebirth. Marti-Thanks for the compliments. The teal is the previous owner's favorite color...which will go away, along with the white paint on the trim, sometime in the foreseeable future. And yes, I have a 6 month expiration on the trailer. First snow is usually around early December here in New England, so I figure by then, I need to be somewhere with thicker (and insulated) walls. Particularly since my current electric bill (with the trailer running off it) is approx. $200 a month...can't imagine those utilities with a trailer heated by electric. And isn't it amazing what people will live with? The PO's son lived in a ramshackle basement room, with the bunny rabbit cage right outside his door, with unimaginable smells and mold. Unbelievable. Scott-Thanks for your offer. My Dad was up here during the first month of recovery to finish off my half-baked projects, and I'm hoping my cousin (who is a contractor is Saint Croix) will come up, since he's slow right now. But hey, I'll keep you in the Rolodex! In regards to financing, I hate to think about taking out a second or personal to finance the repairs....particuraly since I'm financially exhausted, having to carry both the house & condo for 8 months. My lender, who is very good, just contacted me about a refi, which I might do, then take the extra $$ per month and sock it away for repairs. I'd rather take it slow, and live in a half finished house, then worry about more debt. Oh, and Navi comes from an previous company, although my Dad is a sailor and my brother was in the Navy. Maybe it's karma talking. And I completely understand about the smoke...my friend just bought a certified pre owned Audi A4, and I could tell within seconds that the previous owner was a smoker. How I lived 18 years with 2 smoking parents is beyond me. Sandy: Thank you for such kind words and good advice about pet cleanup. One of the first post-construction tasks is to get a dog, and I want to keep dog hair to a minimum. Good to know there are things out there to battle the smell on a regular basis :-) Chris, Steph, Retire: Thanks, but the clean is yet to come. I lost my camera in the move and pre-surgery hysteria. I'm buying one today, and will post pictures of the demolition site that is my current house. Writers: I hear what you are saying...thank you. I stop now at the first twinge of discomfort and sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Heck, I had to sit down between cutting my 4 shrubs and raking up the shrub-kill. Hard transition from someone who worked 12 hour weekend days doing demo. But hey, I'm not going anywhere, it's the house I could to grow old in, and I keep trying to remind myself the GW & Old House Forum Motto of "not letting the house demolish your life". Hi. Joining this long thread a little late. My name is Lisa. I'm 35 and currently a SAHM to two boys, ages 6 1/2 and 4. I finished a post-doc in Clinical Psychology 2 1/2 years ago, before moving from Chicago to the Philly area. I plan to go back to work part-time some day but haven't taken steps in that direction yet. I've been married for 10 years to my dh Scott who is a Neurologist specializing in Epilepsy. This is our 2nd house. We've lived here for 2 1/2 years. It's a new construction house, though we didn't design it (when we purchased it, it was 95% finished). It's (to our mind) not particularly attractive on the outside, but it is very spacious inside and didn't need renovation. That was key for us, as we moved here with very small kids and had just worked hard renovating parts our old house in the suburbs of Chicago. New construction is an anomoly in our neighborhood. The builder had torn down one house, split the lot, and built two houses on it, facing the other direction. So what we have is a big house on a small lot and a funny shaped (long and narrow) back yard. No one has big yards in our neighborhood, and the neighborhood has an "urban light" feel to it, with side walks and homes built close together. We actually like this--we like knowing our neighbors and being able to walk, ride bikes, etc. on the sidewalks. We walk our oldest to 1st grade, which is wonderful as well. I like decorating but feel I am a complete novice at it. I am one of those people who know what I like when I see it but can't always imagine it in my head. Strange for me, since I consider myself a fairly creative person. I guess this is a art unto itself. We have a lot of white walls that need painting rooms that need tweaking. Thanks guys! You have given me some great clues. I think his fussiness was due to many factors, including: tummy adjustment to the rice ceral (I think he does better with oatmeal), inability to sleep well on his back, teething (drooling and chewing a lot), his 4 mo. shots were this week, and also (mainly, I think) he had some redness/irritation around his wee (we hadn't been cleaning the area where he's been circumcised well enough). :-(

That's great, Andrea. We also have 8pm bedtime, just after a story. I still feed him (nurse) one more time (before I go to bed - around 10pm) and he sleeps until 6am -- sometimes earlier, but he stays in the crib playing/talking/fussing/whatever until 6am. This has helped him to entertain himself so well. Nice to wake up to a cooing rather than crying baby! Still likes to fuss at naptimes, though. Guess he needs to wind down. Does Logan need a nap/get cranky after just a couple hours of waketime, too?

Yes, Karla, I think the rice is not so good on his tummy. Maybe I can use it mixed with fruits/applesauce later on, since I do have a BIG box to use! I sure wish Cole could sleep on his back better. I have been letting him fuss some to get used to the idea. If he's extra tired, he won't even roll over, anyway. I also wish he could sleep better out in public places/other people's homes. I go to playgroups/church meetings/stores where naptime comes and he fights it. Guess he prefers his warm crib with the fan going (white noise - drowns out the neighbors dog). He will sleep in the car, now, and has fallen asleep in his bouncy and during story time, but not without a little fussing. I don't go out too much, I try to plan things during his waketime (is this a bad idea?). Then, days where I can't, his nap schedule is interrupted -- is there a way to get him to 'sleep anywhere'? I've seen other babies do it and I'm in shock!!

I am guessing as his tummy gets more used to regular foods, that you could use that rice cereal at a later date mixed with fruits or something.

When DD was younger I was always planning our outings around her wake times. I too would see babies that could sleep anywhere. (I always *guessed* that most of those babies were not on much of a routine, so sleeping anytime anywhere would not be disturbing to them. Again, just a guess.) Anyway, I think there were two factors that played a role for us. One, DD was very into her routine in that she always knew what to expect. That was a good thing, except when I would be out and instead of her being able to take a nap anywhere, she knew that was not where she was supposed to be to sleep! (LOL) Second, I think age played a part of it. While DD is still very much into her routines, we have found that she is more flexible at this age as far as where she will sleep, etc. So, to make a long story short, I think the big things are to try and keep the rountine for the most part, but also have your DS used to being out and doing things. Sounds like you guys are already making a good start with that. I think the more exposure they have to being somewhere else when it is nap time, they get used to it.

I love Cole's page by the way. Lots of cute pics. He is adorable! (But of course, you already knew that!!) ;-)

sorry, Tyra...I just attempted to send you a super long post and something happened and it completely erased it. I am too frustrated to re-write it so I will tomorrow. Just know that Cole is so adorable that I just want to 'eat him up' and I am glad to be able to chat w/ you b/c I think we have a lot in common. Where do you live? I am in Arizona. I will make an effort to re-think everything that I have just said in my erased post and post again tomorrow. It is finally great to put a face with the name, you know?
