Taking long trip with baby, can you help me? :)

My husband and I are considering taking a vacation with some friends this May, probably a 7-10 day trip sometime during the last two weeks of May. My baby, Logan, will be six months old on May 7th. We will be driving from NE to San Antonio, and then on to Corpus Christi TX. The distance in hours from here to San Antonio is about 14 hours. We may stop in Oklahoma City to visit the memorial and maybe stay there. The details aren't definite. My friends have a minivan that seats 7. There would be seven of us...4 adults, our baby, and their two daughters. We have all ridden in there together before so I know we fit. However, I was thinking that due to space maybe my husband and I would drive separately so we all have more room. We can take turns riding wherever. For a while the guys can have the car while us ladies and the kids/baby ride in the van. Not sure. Tell me what you think about that part..one car or two? My real question is just about traveling with a baby that age. I know many people have done it, my cousin had a baby the day before me and when he was 7 weeks she drove from Kentucky to Nebraska, stayed here for a while, then drove to Arizona, and then back to Kentucky...in a car also with her husband and 19 month old daughter. So I know it can be done, but I just don't want to lose my mind doing it. Have any of you traveled with a six month old? What are they doing at that age? Will he be okay in the car seat that long? I mean I know for the sake of him, and the other little girls (ages 4 and 5) we will need frequent breaks. Will it be a huge hassle? Is it worth it? We really want this vacation, but we also want it to be enjoyable? Also for any of you in TX is the heat unbearable in May? I have been there many times, but always in October or March. Please give me ANY suggestions and advice that you think might help us make some important decisions about this trip. Thanks so much.

I would do 2 cars b/c with 7 people for that long, you're going to have a lot of luggage plus stroller, carseat, etc. I took DD on plane at 2 months but have no idea how well a long car ride for 6 mo. would be. Seems easier when they're younger as they sleep more. My DD is 7 mo. and no longer enjoys even short car rides.

Having an extra car gives a lot more options. It may or may not be 'needed' but it can still give people a sense of relief if that is ever needed. If not relief exactly, it's sometimes nice to break the monotony of long rides/drives by switching vehicles too.

6 month olds usually require some adult attention. They'll need some talking to or singing to, and some familiarity to orient themselves. They might or might not get carsick (usually those kinds of problems show up later though if they occur). If they get pushed past their personal point of endurance though, they will cry and need more intensive soothing. Some of that can be avoided by having an assigned adult sort of monitor the baby's apparent stress level.

Basics would be some way to isolate and travel with (if necessary) dirty diapers until the next stop. Teething, and basic infant pain relief supplies. Sunscreens for infants or extremely sensitive skin, and hats and/or baby sunglasses or sun shades. Also, for the adults take at least one special comfort indulgence. That can help extend the adult's endurance if that's needed. It is sometimes hard for 4 and 5 year old verbal developing children on long car trips and they will need to be verbal and probably to take play breaks (they should have activity-related toys like frisbees or jump ropes or balls; anything that will help them to get a little physical exercise --the adults might be able to benefit from their own exercise too if possible).

It's more of a hassle than travelling as a single adult probably, and maybe even than travelling as a couple of adults sharing a relationship, but it's probably worth it. The trick to not losing one's mind is to recognize the symptoms of impending problems and to act proactively to take relaxation steps or to improve the problematic situation. (Allow everyone to be at the age and stage they are, and to have the personalities, thoughts and feelings they all have naturally (including yourself). Then, try to work with everyone as they are, and not how they 'should' be and things should be enjoyable.)

If you have a 5 gallon bucket and know how large the area is that needs to be watered, it's not too hard to get a time that will accomplish your goals. First, time how long it takes for your hose to fill up a 5 gallon bucket. This gives you the rate at which your irrigation system puts out water. Then, do the math contained in #1 and you're all set. "How Much Water - If nature has not supplied water as rain applying approximately 1 inch of water is a general rule of thumb. This will give deep penetration of the soil to a depth of six to eight inches. One inch of water or rain is equivalent to 623 gallons per 1000 sq. ft. Water should be applied no faster than the soil is able to absorb it. If water begins to run off before one inch is applied, stop sprinkling until it is absorbed and then resume. How long will applying 1 inch of water take? This depends on the size hose, pressure and type of sprinkler being used. There are several methods for determining how much your are applying. 1. Do The Math - Find the gallons per minute (GPM) flow rate of the sprinkler being used from the package of the manufacturer. Multiply the square footage to be watered by .62 gallons or 1 inch of water per square foot. Example: 1000 sq. ft. x .62 gal. = 620 gallons. This tells you how many gallons of water you need to apply to the lawn. Divide that number the GPM of your sprinkler and you can figure how many minutes to water. 2. Collect The Water - Place a cup or glass in the middle of the area covered by your sprinkler, turn water on and watch the time. Measure water in the cup until 1 inch is collected. This is the time you need to sprinkle. The best accuracy is obtained if you use several containers at different places in the sprinklerÃ¯Â¿Â½s coverage pattern and average the results. 3. Buy A Flow Timer - Often called water timers, these units actually measure water flow. They are calibrated in 100 gallons and can be set from 100 to 1500 gallons to give you the water necessary for the square footage covered by the sprinkler. Use the formula in #1 to figure the gallons needed. 4. Test Soil - Test the soil 6" or more below the surface to make sure it is dry. Turn on your sprinkler and periodically test the soil 6" down until the water has penetrated to that depth. Keep track of how long it took and use that as the time you need to water. I can only wish you luck...I've been having great results, 1st mouse ears popped up 1 month after I planted my last batch of leaves (over 100 leaves), it's now almost 8 weeks after I planted them and over 90% have babies, I suspect the slowpokes were older leaves (got them on ebay). I use 1/1/1 mix and water a lot! Keep em moist is my mantra I do not however bag them, they always rotted when I did that and seemed to take forever. My lights are on from 7am till 10pm I think more light helps IMO. Oh, and I also use a modified Texas method (3 holes burned in the bottom of a 3 oz solo cup, 4 holes burned about 1" up the side of the cup, pearlite in the bottom 1" of cup followed by the 1/1/1 to fill the rest of the cup).

still thinking, here... If you're starting in Ft Worth, maybe you've already visited the Ft Worth Botanic Gardens/Japanese Gardens/Rose Gardens? & there's a restaurant in there called, I think, The Greenhouse or something similar. In the large building (forget what it's called, but it houses the Conservatory, a big glassed-in tropical garden), there are a couple of meeting rooms that sometimes have something going on: plant show, herb show, daylily sale, orchid show/sale, etc. & often there's a speaker in the auditorium. It's just off I-30, parallel to & north of 20. It seems like I google FWBG to find the info. In the same area are the Omni Theater, the museum district, including the Kimball & the FW Museum of Science & History, Will Rogers Complex (there's always *something* going on there, I sometimes google for it, & sometimes I just drive over!). There's an antique mall at the corner of 30 & Montgomery, & it has a tearoom. Tyler has extensive rose gardens, too- but I don't know the geography! The American Rose Society, in Shreveport, has beautiful gardens. That's all I can think of right now.

My husband and I have taken our God-daughter with us on 4 vacations, 2 in the U.S. and 2 to foreign countries. You want to write a letter expressing that both parents (and give your names) give full consent for your daughter (give her full birth certificate name and her age) to travel with her maternal grandmother (give her full name) to and from (destination) and any areas that this vacation may need to take them. You also want to include that in the event of an emergency that both parents are giving her grandmother full authority to make any medical decisions for your child. You need to also include how you can be contacted if the grandmother becomes incapacitated (include a copy of your itinerary with dates you will be there, hotels and phone numbers). If your daughter has any known medical problems or allergies to medications include this also in the letter. With this information included, verification can be made if there is ever any question. The letter does not need to be notorized. Do NOT take any original documentation of a birth certificate. Take only a copy, if it is lost, you will have nothing to send to replace it. Giving your mother this opportunity to take your child with her will be something she will cherish and remember the rest of her life.

Wherever I go my bag has the following - changing stuff, fresh clothes, food and spoons, cartons milk - if you're not breastfeeding, bottles and a sip-cup, bottle of water for sip cup, bibs, toys, pain relief, teethers.

We went on an 8 hour trip when mine was about 7 or 8 months old and it was fine.

Take a stop every couple of hours unless they're asleep when you can just keep driving :). It's good for them to get out of the child seat to stretch their legs and have a wander.

Take some music with you and have singalongs.

I agree with the others as well - 2 cars would be best.
