Breat Feeding New Born?

I am just asking you young mothers this. I have had 7 children and breast feed 5 of them, My new daughter-in-law is from Russia. Her baby is just 10 days old.

I do not think she has enough breast milk. She says she does. Her breasts do not skrurt out with milk. She has to give him one breast and then the other at each feeding. To me it seems like he is just using like a passafier. He does sleep well but, sometimes wakes up and you have to give him a passafier till the next feeding. He does not really cry. He seem to be a good baby. He wets his diaper well..... I am concerned.

If he's having several wet and poopy diapers a day, he's probably getting enough to drink. I think 12 diapers a day is the magic number. If you're really concerned you can call the pediatrician's office. They'll usually let you bring the baby in to be weighed to make sure it's gaining weight.

Not everyone squirts out lots of milk. I breastfeed my child and I have to use nursing pads all the time to keep my clothes dry. My step-sister is breastfeeding her child also, but doesn't have a problem with leakage and hasn't had to use nursing pads. I've talked to other mothers who also said they didn't need to use nursing pads. Every woman is different.

Thank you so much! I am so relieved. The Russian culture and the American is so different. I know she was concerned too, but did not want me to know. I always had lots of milk. Her breasts do not squirt out like mine did. So this worried me. I will not worry quite as much. Back in my day over 50 years ago:-)...things were done different. I do not want to cause any problems between me and my daughter-in-law.

I never fertilize seedlings, and the whole concept doesn't make much sense to me. Seedlings carry the energy and nutrients that they need for their early life in their seed leaves. The most mine ever get is a small amount of time-release fertilizer that I mix in when I make my soil mixture. If your seedlings damped off, I'd assume you were watering too much. How do you determine your watering schedule? Also, what sort of soil are you growing them in? I'd be more concerned with fungus residing in your soil than on your seeds. I'm curious -- was the damping off in seedlings that were watered with peroxide or not?

I am so sorry to hear about your father's health problems. Medicare does not have limits on lifetime rehab to my knowledge. There is a per diagnosis limit, but as far as I know, there is no lifetime limit; this is worth looking into. Medicare does limit the number of days at Skilled Nursing Facilities to a certain number of days per calendar year. Care at an intermediate care facility (ICF or ECF) is never covered by Medicare or health insurance except for Medicaid; this is considered a place to live in lieu of home and not rehab. Medicaid DOES have lifetime limits for number of visits or days in some states, but not Medicare which is federally regulated, although there are regional variations in how the rules are applied. Rehab at either a SNF (skilled nursing facility) or inpatient rehab facility is limited both by need and time. E.g. if your policy has (for example) 60 days of acute inpatient rehab, you don't automatically get 60 days unless that's what you need based on your progress and your goals; same for SNF care. But if you have a stroke the week after being discharged from acute rehab for injuries from a fall, rehab should be covered IF YOU MEET THE CRITERIA for inpt rehab (SNF-level rehab may not be if you've exhausted the # of days per calendar year). Talk to the social worker or discharge planner assigned to your dad for clarification of what level of care he needs and what Medicare will or won't cover. He may or may not also qualify for some social security or other benefits. If your parents will both need long term care, you/they may have to sell or liquidate home/assets to fund long term care until your parents are Medicaid eligible. Unfortunately, without longterm care insurance, costs for home health aides and unskilled care are not covered, and of course, neither are your mother's. Medicare will pay for rehab in the home if you are homebound, but rehab is "skilled" care (something requiring a license). A physical or occupational therapist comes in for a short therapy session once or more a week. It doesn't include bathing, 24 hour care, overnight care, household tasks, etc. Medicare/insurance pays for a licensed someone to come rehabilitate you or teach your family or caregiver to provide care you need, not to take care of you, if that makes sense. I agree that it's worth talking to an attorney for a consultation. Huge numbers of patients do acquire infections in the hospital every year which causes deaths and disability, but just because the infection was acquired in the hospital, it isn't automatically a preventable complication. You have to prove negligence or lack of adherence to policies and procedures as well as damages to get a win in a suit.

When I was a child Dad bought me three rabbits, a buck and two does. We put them in the chicken coop. In a year we had 119 bunnies, and that didn't count the ones we ate, we gave away, etc. I never did manage to sell one, no one here wants a bunny. You literally cannot give them away, then or now. Dad finally opened that door and let them go. When the boys go rabbit hunting at the farm they still get white bunnies, black bunnies, golden bunnies with white feet. They apparently adjusted quite nicely to the habitat because that was at least 40 years ago and their offspring still are everywhere in Norwich Township in spite of the flourishing fox population. And now I have a family of them in the backyard eating my plants. Of course, my theory has always been that if I feed them, I get to eat them, but there's some rule or another about shooting a gun within the city limits. funny, though, if I try to uy dressed rabbit to eat, it's about $5 a pound. We raised them to eat for a while but eventually no one had the stomach to kill them so we quit. I will tell you that you should not put rabbit in a crockpot unless youw atch it carefully. It'll fall apart and then you spent a lot of time picking out all those tiny little bones..... Annie

As for feeding, what chuckiebtoo said. If you are feeding them finished thermophilic compost, you should just fill the whole bin with compost, and you will need nothing else to bed them in or feed them. Otherwise, feeding is as much an art as it is a science. For your 100 worms, you don't need to feed much. A small amount in one corner of the bin will do. When that is mostly gone, put a small amount in another corner. The best thing you can do is fill the bin with aged horse manure and never have to feed them at all. As for cardboard, I pick mine up at Walmart when I go grocery shopping. Many stores will put canned goods on the shelf still in the cut down boxes. look for the empties and grab them. Three or four of these a week will take care of a typical RM bin with about 2+ lb of worms. If you have an apartment complex nearby, their dumpsters usually have a few boxes courtesy of people moving into the complex or receiving shipments.

Betty, her feeding the baby both breasts at a feeding will stimulate milk production. When he wakes in the night isn't she feeding him?...only a passifier?,,,At 10 days a breast fed baby should be eating at least every 3 to 4 hours night and day.

Yes, she feeds him in the night about every 2 hours. I think he is getting enough milk. I was not sure. He ia 11 days old. He eats every 2 hours.
I am going to watch and see if he is really latching on to the breast. Just to make sure. I will let y'all know.

It is interesting how you bring up culture. In a lot of Scandinavian countries, for example, nearly 100 percent of women at least start out breastfeeding their babies. I think the US is somewhere in the middle. Like Adella said, not everyone will "squirt." I do only when my milk lets down, which is usually painful because there is so much. Although my big eater has learned to accommodate this and doesn't choke so much early in a feeding like he used to - it was just coming out too fast for him. Pumping/using both breasts will increase milk production, like Linda said. And not all babies want both breasts - at first mine was satisfied with just one and now that he's getting bigger, wants both, it seems. If he is latching on well your DIL's nipples won't be sore (or at least minimally) and most of the areola (around the nipple) will not show. As long as he has at least six good wet diapers in 24 hours you know he's getting enough (not to mention plenty of poops!). You will also hear the baby swallowing. If not, he is either getting full or yes, using her as a passifier.

Breastfed babies poop less than bottlefed babies sometimes. The real thing to look for is how many wet diapers there are a day. I wish I had not had leaking problems. Your daughter-in-law is lucky.

A nurse warned me to not let the baby use my breasts as pacifiers. Then a lactation consultant came by and exasperated threw up her hands and said, "Breasts ARE pacifiers!" Really, what's so terrible about that (as long as MOM doesn't mind)?

And even if your grandchild SEEMS to just be using her as a pacifier, there's a purpose to that as you know in the more the baby sucks, the more the baby will stimulate the milk production it exactly needs. In fact, a study has drawn a connection between pacifier use and low milk production, so it sounds like your DIL is doing the right thing.

I was amazed at how my milk production fluctuated over the course of many months depending on how much my son was nursing. When he needed more my breasts produced more; as he took less I produced much less.

Agree about the diapers. There's input, output! Not much more scientific than that! :)
