How to Get Help...from Spouse

I have found this place as a result of having sons growing more distant...but, today, I realized my husband is going to continue on a path of emotional destruction in our 40 yr marriage...and I need help to get away...being constantly told that I could be more involved with my grown sons if just wanting to has been a mainstay in our life....my life was always about my family....but his has always been about working long hours even when our children were toddlers...now to humiliate me by comparing me with a DIL's mother...to suggest that she is more involved because she desires it more than I do has been what finally makes me ask this question here....as a woman who took care of her family becoming unable to work 10 yrs ago due to a painful hip and leg..I get very little money...have never had control of finances....the verbal abuse is bad...and I believe my husband has a mental deficit of some kind getting worse....

How do you at 57 get help to be independent? I am fearful of his lack of verbal control and lack of empathy that has only gotten worse as my condition has....he laughs at my suggestions to get help for himself...and has stolen money from me to put in 401k acct with only his name...telling me that I am the beneficiary...company will give me no info at all....why should I trust someone who talks to me this way....

I have nothing and cannot even rent an apt as I would need an income 3 times the rent....I have found evidence of him creating a dating site acct. But swears he did not....I would be too embarrassed to even tell this to my sons...he is from a family who has had numerous crime charges...it seems like the resistentece at authority or rules to live by is challenging for him....almost a compulsion to go against the tide...

I want to get away.....just had ankle surg and cannot do any activity for at least 3 to 4 weeks....

What resources do women like me have...he refuses to leave the house or help me to leave...he is only here because he does not want to give me anything outside of this house....

I called the spousal abuse hotline last year..but they were no help...it is mental...emotional and financial....what can I do?

I'm so sorry you are going through this and I don't know how you get help for this situation.

I think I would try the spousal abuse hotline again and see if I got a different counselor who could give some advice.

I think if I could get together enough money I would also consult an attorney to see what my legal options migt be. I had a friend who was having difficulties with her husband. She privately consulted an attorney, even though at that time she didn't want a divorce, and he gave her some great advice.

I hope you can get the help you need.

Thanks daisy...for the reply....of all people to respond..it would be someone with a sn of Daisy....before my sister passed away...we talked about what signs I would have that she was there...and she told me to when I saw Daisies...her fav flower...

I have thought a lot recently about my situation.....posting here must be cathartic....

My husband has changed a lot......maybe too much for it to be normal...healthwise...I cannot help but wonder if there is something chemically imbalanced at this point....

There is no phys. abuse....but his personality makes me feel emotionally abused...certainly he thinks he is making good financial decisions...I am fearful if he does not come to terms with my concerns...he could lose everything....

I am convinced as well, that a urologist is giving him wrong doses of testosterone treatment...maybe not enough...or too much...something is not right and I need to find out....

My situation of feeling overwhelmed by this issue is not getting any better...maybe it will take a wake up call for him to understand he needs to either get more opinions of the treatment or stop them altogether....I realized when this began...and is consistent with those treatments beginning....the dr told him it would help his overall feeling of wellbeing....what a joke

Thanks again for responding....my post is a difficult one to read and know how to respond to it....so much desperation in it...but I remember what the good witch in the wizard of oz told dorothy..."you had the power to go home the whole time"

My husband and I have a good working division/combination of labor where outdoor matters are concerned. I am in charge of the flower beds and he is in charge of the vegetable garden and berries. He helps me when I need help in the flower gardens and I help him when he needs help in the vegetable gardens. He does mow the lawn but I didn't have a fit when he bought a big, bright red riding mower to do it (like a very expensive toy and not justified by our limited lawn area). I used to mow the lawn with an electric push mower, which he hated, so he got the job along with the choice of mower. That's a pretty good example of how we work it out - we both have our opinions and know that it's better if we mark out our territories rather than battle over each point. This way I am proud of his garden and all the wonderful produce (we work together on canning, preserving, and freezing) and he is proud of my flower gardens and enjoys the views from the porch and the deck. He also prepares my containers for wintersowing (using a power saw and a propane torch - more toys!) but then I did teach him the method, which he uses to get his veggies started early. And he likes to encourage my seed starting because he is convinced it saves tons of money at the garden center. Win/win.

I lost my husband of 38 years 30 days ago and it has been so hard. He needed a liver, which was diagnosed in June, he was in and out of the hospital. His last stay was for six weeks and until the last couple of days I just knew he was going to get one. I was devastated when I lost him. I feel empty and lost. even though we have 3 wonderful grown daughters it is not the same. sometimes I feel like I cant go on without him. I feel like a I have no purpose. Everywhere I look or go, reminds me of him, my heart hurts so much. I know that God doesn't give us more than we can bear, and I am trying to believe that but its hard. I have my family,friends and church but its still so very hard. I know life goes on but I feel at a standstill and don't really want to go on. I feel like it was just happened yesterday, its just been so hard to go on.

Agree with the other posts. Why the he// do you stay with someone who, according to you, is wonderful, loving and generous with everyone else including his (not related to him) friends and employees, and treats you and your child like carp? And who expects you to pay for pretty well everything as well as doing all the housework? You're not only a skivvy, but a skivvy who supports this ingrate and enables him to be Mr Generosity to everyone else. I'd be moving back to my place and cutting all ties with this creep. You say you want your children to have a father, but this guy surely cannot possibly be the father you wanted for them, one who gives them the example that Mom is the household slave and who ignores them (forgetting to pick up one from day care???) in favour of others. You may not get child support but then it won't be an unfamiliar situation- you're not getting it now. This guy isn't a husband and father, he's a millstone. Time to slip your neck out of the hole, breathe free and have the chance to find someone who appreciates you, if that's what you want.

One of my closest friends helped me through the end of my ten-year marriage. Of course, she heard all of my sob stories about how rotten my marriage was and what a jerk my Ex was, so when she met a man who was the complete and total opposite, she just had to fix me up. I was at work one day when she called and asked if I had a second. I said sure, so she proceeded to tell me about "a good friend of hers" that she wanted me to meet. Then she said "hold on a second" and handed him the phone! We talked for a bit but didn't set up anything specific because I was travelling a lot for work, but she kept after us both (relentlessly) until we agreed to meet for lunch about three weeks later. I got to the restaurant a few minutes early (I hate being late), and got the very last parking space in their tiny lot. At about one minute after the appointed time, he pulls up right in front of the door, gets out, comes in, and apologizes profusely for being late (it was only a minute or two), and explains that he has to find a parking space and will be right back. I was impressed by his considerateness, and thought he seemed nice-looking and easy to talk to. Over lunch, he told me he was a general contractor, and said he was renovating his house, and I asked him for his advice about a water leak I had just found in my ceiling. I told him I was leaving for a week's vacation that weekend and the wet spot had grown measurably overnight, so he offered to come by and take a look at it after lunch. Since he was a friend of a friend and I lived just around the corner from the restaurant, I agreed. After looking at the wet spot and the area above it on the second floor (my bathroom - toilet drain line - yuck!) he said he'd have to cut into the ceiling to see how serious it was or wasn't. So he went out to his Suburban, brought in a toolbox and a change of clothes, changed into work clothes, pulled out a little ladder, then sawed a perfect little round hole in my ceiling. He was up on that ladder with sheetrock dust and toilet water dribbling onto his shoulders when I commented to him that "I'll bet this is one blind date you won't forget!" And he just laughed and looked down at me -- and I looked up at him -- and that was it -- magic. As it happens, I found out a few months later that my friend had only met him a few hours before! And it was a "pure physical chemistry" thing that she thought I'd appreciate. She had no idea what a wonderful guy came with that hunky physique!

The judge is probably the only one who can give you what you need. See a lawyer.

Sketcher25, you can inform your husband's doctor of the changes in his personality. Ask the doctor to keep it confidential. The doctor will not share your husband's medical situation with you, but if s/he is good, will find a way to get your husband in for a check-up.
While you are laid up, you can call various offices or look on the web. Sometimes a county or city office can provide services to women who are fleeing domestic abuse. You can also start applying for jobs. By the time you get an interview, you will be walking again.
Don't be afraid to tell your sons what is going on. They may have distanced themselves because of your husband.
