computer for 6 yo

What do you parents think the best computer would be for a 6 yo boy? He uses one at school in a very limited way and he gets on ours and messes things up. I was thinking a computer he could grow into instead of any toy computer. Thanks, Paul

Are you anywhere close to an Apple Store?

The one near me has an entire section set up for kids and parents-with-kids to play with what they have available and see whether or not it's what they may have had in-mind for this kind of thing.

I'm an old guy. Personally, I don't know anything about it. All I'm saying is I've seen the set-up there and all their stuff is up and running all the time and there are always kids playing with it.

I am a 6+ year Mac-switcher so I do have that bias.

My 5 year old has a disney netbook,its perfect ,actually I am on it now,she loves it,easy to use and little to carry about and cheaper than laptops.so much faster than our computer and laptops too,although i dont know why.

Mike: Thanks for the kind words. It does happen. March of '73, '80, '02 and a couple more I can't put an exact number on. It was 19.5 Deg F in Houston in Mar. 2002. That is the lowest late temperature I remember. My Keraji froze back to almost 1/2" wood. They are normally very cold hardy but it was very young and I had just put it in the ground the year before. So it wanted to grow all winter. The youngest tree I have now is about three years in the ground. The bad thing is there is little or no warning. Last night and even this morning, NOAA was forecasting 38- 41 deg F. Now they dropped it to 31. They are still behind the curve. Channel 13 has dropped their's to 26 Deg F for the AM low. Johnorange: I hope you only make it down to mid thirties the next few nights. It is already 32 in Wharton.

Barb, what great ideas your group has used! I would love to see any/all of the projects. My idea was to make a Christmas tree out of yo-yos---I don't know yet if I would make it a plain triangle shape or try to give an effect of branches or what. I plan for the truck (brown) and the pot (red) to be solid fabric-not yo-yos. The tree will be decorated with Christmas fabric print yo-hos and a really cute tinsel--you stitch small yo-yos every 6 inches or so on baby sized gold or silver rickrack and put that on the tree-very country looking and cute. As usual with my craft ideas, this one is working out great in my head but I haven't actually tried to do it yet so we shall see!

What a great find, I love it. I made some for nursing home patients to use to cover their laps while sitting in a wheelchair. I like to make them while traveling in the car. They require little concentration, are fairly quick to do and can be put down with out loosing your place. beverly

Glad to hear you all are doing ok . My son too is a walking disaster, must be a boy thing. When he broke his arm we did get questioned a lot on how it happened. I guess maybe I was too calm. When they told me they had to X-Ray his arm to see if it was broken, I told them I didn't think they needed to. Maybe to see how bad it was but, it was obviously broken. (Nifty 30 degree angle where there shouldn't have been one was a clear give away) When he threw up from the pain meds I just calmly asked for a pair of scissors to cut his shirt off. I couldn't see pulling it over his head and dumping it in his hair. My DH was not so calm, I kept sending him home for things (clean cloths, let the dog out...) I guess one parent, usually the mom, is wired to get through whatever the situation. That little guy will probably give you plenty more. Sounds like he's a good little trouper. Well perhaps you should think about what you want him to do on the computer ?

At this age, I think it is important to have some software that is worthwhile to use, and not a waste of time.

Perhaps more investigation as to what he is doing at school on their computers.

When my children were little it was always a struggle for me to balance the time on the computer with outside play and imaginative play. I would advise strict guidelines when you introduce him to his own computer.

Also think about friends coming around and how they will all sit there together using the computer.

Totally agree with popi. DD use computer to do online worksheets. Her teacher sent us to this site beestar for online learning. DD is making a great progress. She also loves to compete on this site with other kids from a lot of other states.
