1-2 Combo Class

My 7 y.o started school today. She was put into a first-second grade combo class (she is in 2nd grade). The teacher left a message over the weekend so that I was prepared. In the message, I was told that my daughter was specifically chosen because she works well with others and she works well alone (i.e. needing little guidance). This is true enough and also true of the only other 2 children in the class I know (from her first grade class). The teacher is certainly upbeat and sounds like she is excited about this "very special group of hand-picked kids".

IÂm more than a little concerned though. Have any of you had a child in this situation? How did it turn out???

When I was in 5th grade, I was in a 5/6 combo class. It was not unlike any other class I was in, except not all the kids were learning the same thing at the same time. It sounds like she actually may benefit from being in this class because if all the kids were picked because of their ability to work well with other, it may be a really good group of students to have in her class. The only drawback I could see would be that the teacher may have a little less time to work seperately with each group, but probably no less time than teachers who are having to deal with kids that don't work well together in a regular class. I'm sure it will all turn out great!

I did this in first grade. I was in a 1/2/3 rotating class, where all of us shifted thru all three grades throughout the day. That was in 1970 and I figured it had died a long time ago. Wow!

Anyhow, I turned out ok but I often wondered how it felt for the older kids. Maybe, though, it was good, so that they could refresh on some subjects that maybe they needed a little better foundation on.

OA, pretty cool, the only thing to change is the size of the cells. If you go to the top, and put your curser on one of the lines at the edge of the cell, and drag the curser, it will enlarge the cell so the words don't overflow into the next cell, plus if you have a more wordy description it will now fit. I am glad you knew how to do an attachment of the excel like this, I could not figure out how to "show" it to you all. thanks! PS, the excel in the example that I use is just a guide line for me, you can adjust it to your own personal needs.

I just discovered this forum and then I clicked on this post because I wanted to see how you taught a class on the kaleidoscope blocks. This is a very exciting block and I know because I have made quite a few of them. I just want to assure those that use this class will find it exciting to see the various blocks develope. I learned this method several years ago from Bethany Reynolds book Magic Stack-n-Whack Quilts. After awhile I didn't like following her method of joining the blocks but just appliqued a block onto a square block and joined them adjoining or alternating with a solid block. I had never tried joining them as you have shown. I'll be interested in seeing how you determine the way to join them. So I'll drop in every once in awhile. ferrellee5

those look great! n look easy to do! makes me wanna dig in my scrap box! lol cant belive i havent noticed your classes before, definitly gonna look for em now *big smiles* ya know i realy do like the plaid with it, that pattern reminds me of the basket weave block pattern, so i can see how the plaid would blend in to much but i still like it! lol im workin on somthing now, just got done with my last block, 64 2inch blocks to make one lol i hade 9 now i gotta sew em together n do the border but i might make one of yours just for fun lol have ta figure out how to post a pic when i do.

Of COURSE it doesn't make sense. It's "if you absolutely had to"- we aren't Preppers, but it seems that sort of a question, except we failed to include ingredients that would be hard to find. Whatever. It was late, we were hungry. Our choices: MR: #1. First came a place, that he used to not like- Tatsuya, in Austin. He now loves the original. Miso broth, good greens, soba noodles, pork round, half a soft boiled egg- spices etc. They call it the original. One dish- qualifies!- and also includes lime. No scurvy. Asian cooking will always help you survive. #2. His marinara sauce, plus pasta and my meatballs.The nutrition in the sauce is great, meatballs great too. A bit hard to think of it as "one dish", since it takes a bit. But I could survive on that, for sure. #3- Curveball-me. I'm Greek, and so 1 dish? Spanikopita. Spinach, onions, garlic, some butter (one dish- you'll need the fat), eggs, cottage cheese plus feta- lean proteins- phyllo dough- one dish, you'll need the carbs. Old school Greeks also grill lemons, to serve on the side. Lots of nutrition in this one. For me, it's an "old school/old country". Fun exercise.

I was in classes like that in 1st-5th grades. It worked out ok then because in the time that the teacher was working with the other grade, we were all working individually reading, doing math problems, etc. I think we had a class helper to help if we had questions. If the kids are handpicked for this class, I'm not sure how it would be any different than a teacher sending some advanced students to their desk to work while students who needed more attention were working with the teacher.

My DD was in a 1/2 as a 2nd grader. The students were all hand picked and so the collection of students were exceptionally nice and good students as well.
