3-year-old son acting like baby; expecting baby in Sept

I need some advice on handling my 3-year-old son. We are expecting a baby girl this fall (Sept) and my son seems overly fascinated with acting like a baby -- he constantly proclaims himself to be a baby (rarely as a "big kid"), is starting to insert more baby talk into his speech (and he's quite verbal for his age), asks for a bottle every day (we don't give it), etc.

We do try to talk up his new role as a big brother as well as all the benefits of being a big kid.

Still, I can tell that he remains uncertain about growing up. Please tell me this too shall pass! Any advice?

I am sure it will pass. Just make sure you spend lots of time with just him, so he doesn't feel left out.

You seem to be doing the right thing.

When he acts "baby" let him do it for a bit and then distract him with something more age appropriate. when the baby is born, I am sure he will quickly realize its far better being a 3 year old !

When My kids did this I let them, and would point out how it wasn't as fun being a baby. Example, if they wanted the bottle and I had formula, I made up a bottle for them with formula (They didn't like it), ane dsaid, but that's what babies drink. If they wanted to go ou tside and play, they couldn't because babies had to stay inside because it was too hot/cold whatever/ The "I want to be a baby" only lasted about a week, they found out it was more fun being the older sibling.

As for the babytalk..I "couldn't understand" baby talk, so they didn't get whatever they wanted when talking baby talk. I could understand big kid talk. It is amazing how when it isn't FUN, they don't want to do it.

I feel sorry for your landlord. But, as for advice: 1. Call child services/acf/dept children&families/child abuse hotline (1-800-422-4453 http://www.childhelp.org/pages/hotline-home) and tell them what you just posted here. All the rest of you are adults, and you make your own choices, but that is NOT A SAFE environment for a child, and it's your JOB as a decent human to ensure that children/animals are not HURT by YOUR actions, and that child is being hurt by these actions. No amount of picking up slack and making sure she's fed negates the damage of being exposed to drugs and mentally unsafe people (and presumably needles, possibly blood pathogens, etc. 2. Seek help. Call NAMI's helpline at 1-800-950-6264, Google "mental health hotline" with your state in the search, and you'll turn up toll free numbers to call and get support, people who can help you make better decisions, and refer you to local assistance. If you live in any of the covered areas, call Pathways to Housing and tell them your story, tell them you need your own space to clean up and feel safe: http://pathwaystohousing.org/locations/ Pathways is an organization that helps people with housing problems and mental health problems get safe, secure, single housing, and get them support to recover. I'm a Pathways client. They are amazing. 3. Get outside more. I don't know where you live, but even if it's just going for a walk around the block, or sitting in a park, or even just sitting out on the curb, get outside and BREATHE. If you are a hoarder, you may also have agoraphobia, which means you don't like to go outside, if this is the case, try to make your own space, even if it's a little space just big enough for you and a book, made of newspaper walls, get your own space. 4. Get some furniture (try recycle centers, those are great fun, especially if you're a hoarder! Just limit yourself to TWO ITEMS and stick to it! Or, even better, only take something when you GIVE something, make it an exchange!), make the space for useful spaces, consider converting some of your junk INTO furniture. Two milk crates filled with papers topped with an old ironing board would make a "bench" stack books or other solid items to make a desk against a wall for use with your "junkbench". Be creative. If you're a hoarder, space is tight, and a lot of it is little junk that just consumes space, that's how it is, it's an illness, but see if you can re-arrange it to make it FUNCTIONAL. Not only will you possibly make the living space more livable, but it gives you something constructive to do and proves to your frustrated roommates that you're TRYING to fix YOUR PART OF THE MESS to make things better, so it should relieve tensions. I have two friends who wanted to give me a shower for my third child. I insisted very strongly to them that I did not need a shower, nor did I want one. Where I come from this is just not done! I thanked them profusely for wanting to, but I insisted on them not giving me a shower. Well, they surprised me with a shower, a lovely little dinner out with about 10 people, neighbors and friends who weren't around when we had the first two, since we had lived in a different state then. I was overwhelmed with emotion. So grateful that I had friends who wanted to do this for me, who wanted to celebrate my third child in this way. I have been down that cancer road several times, so I know how physically and emotionally exhausting it is. You have to do what you can live with long-term, and if you feel you couldn't live with yourself if you left your husband in these circumstances, then all you can do is minimize the wear-and-tear on yourself and your daughter. I am sorry your step-son is so impossible and even sorrier your husband is so difficult and unsupportive. Cancer didn't suddenly make him a better or different person. Here are my suggestions: 1) Protect yourself and your daughter financially for the possible time when your husband is no longer with you. You may want to set up a separate bank account and sequester some of your resources so you are assured of access to monies regardless of anything your husband might do (like decide suddenly to put his sons' names on the account). If possible, consult with an attorney regarding estate planning. Given your husband's current intractability, you may not have any luck securing his cooperation. But at least you will know what your legal rights are. 2) Prioritize your tasks. Your husband's medical care is a priority. Your daughter's physical and emotional needs are priorities. Doing your step-son's laundry, picking up after him or fixing meals are not. At 14 he can do those things for himself. If he doesn't do them, his problem. 3) Look into support systems for yourself and your husband. That would include hospital services, family support groups and Hospice, so that if the burdens get too heavy to carry alone you know who to go to. Do these things while you're still capable of thinking clearly. A time may come when you're too tired to think at all. This assumes you decide to stick it out. You may decide this is too thankless a task and leave your husband and his rotten kids to their own devices. Feel right in your choice and the judgements of others won't matter.

Why isn't this girl working? she should not be allowed to live rent free. she is clearly sleeping around and having babies with whoever offers. since her mother abandoned her and was abusive, SD is looking for love elsewhere, how sad for her children. and I suspect her father was not as excellent father as you think otherwise both children would not grow up selfish and irresponsible. she needs therapy, career counseling, education, parenting classes and kick in the butt. I take it that baby's father is not around, if you observe her being unfit mother maybe she should not have custody? I wonder if her baby is better off without her. i would start documenting how she treats her child. she is messed up and would be a pity to see her baby growing up messed up as well. something needs to be done to stop this cycle. i bet it is not the last baby either.

That's all good advice. Don't respond to the baby talk, except to say you can't understand it. Ignore the other behavior as long as everyone is safe. Denying him anything baby is only going to make it seem more appealing. Let him see for himself, it's not so good.

Also, go through his baby book/pictures. He lives in the moment, the fact that he was a baby himself is maybe a fact he's heard, but doesn't remember or feel. Let him see he DID do all those baby things, and yet how much he has grown, how much he has learned, and can do for himself.

My kids were each about 3 when the next one was born. It really is a great spacing. Soon you will see your first born fall in love, give love to his new sibling w/no expectations, unconditional. It will melt your heart! This will pass. Be patient. Remember how your first turned your life around, that is what he feels now. This is a big change in his life, he is figuring it out as best he can. Your whole family will readjust and it will be just fine.

Take him on special outings and tell him the baby can't come because she is a baby.

My daughter is two and we have just had another baby,well hes two months old now,before he was born my daughter did all the baby things,since we had him,its like she changed over night,now sleeps in own bed, wees on the toilet,doesnt want her dummy,but she still likes her bottle,and often finishes her brothers bottle when hes finished with it.When your baby arrives i think your son will be totally different,i wouldnt worry about it ,he will feel all grown up and love being the big brother,just make sure he has plenty of mummy time too.congrats on baby

He will eventually adjust...just make sure he'll feel as special as the baby....I know from having 9 myself...and it takes time...
