What do you suggest to keep 20 year old green ash's safe from EAB
Comments (3)pay up.. or cut it down.. and put it out of your misery ... there is no other choice.. IF you are in an active EAB area .. are you??? i presume a 20 year old tree is huge.. and he meant 5 to 10 buckets of properly diluted product ... not undiluted product ... call you county extension office or your state forestry department.. and insure that you are at risk ... z6 simply doesnt tell us much of anything where you are ... mine grew like weeds .. from 3 foot whips to 25 foot trees inside of 5 to 7 years.. i treated once.. and then cut them all down while i could still do that with my own saw ... as you note.. i was not willing to pay the cost ... EVERY YEAR FOR ETERNITY ... one thing for sure.. perhaps you ought to consider planting some replacement trees now.. so that when you do get tired of paying thru the nose.. you will have well established trees.. ready to take over ... ken...See MoreDo I need to strip my 12 year old deck to restain it
Comments (5)Well I am done stripping / cleaning it. I sprayed the areas that still had a solid color of the old stain with the stripper and then used a power washer to strip it off. Then I sprayed the deck with the brightner and power washed it clean. Some areas that were still left or areas i could not reach with the sprayer I sanded the next day. It went pretty smooth. I was not looking for perfection as the deck is 15 years old and some boards are splintery and splitting. I just wanted to get it looking good for a while longer and maybe in 5 more years replace the decking and railings with composit decking (quote for that this year was $16,000). The deck support is in great condition. Maybe in 5 years I will look into ipe or something? Wish I could do that work myself, i think material would be about $4000, that I can handle, $16k i cannot....See Morewho do I call to install a fireplace on a 23 year old house?
Comments (2)Do you currently have a fireplace in the home? If not, what type of fireplace are you looking for? Wood or gas or electric? What room is the fireplace slated for? The answers to these questions will determine whether you start with a GC or a Fireplace company (Usually a fireplace retailer). Good luck!...See More10 year old kitchen- to remodel or not? What would you do?
Comments (44)Your cabinets are quite beautiful. Overall, the existing kitchen has very nice finishes. The main thing that I see about your dream kitchen is light, light, and more light -- and more space. You could have the cabinets painted a white or pale color, a shade that compliments the counters, but I would be reluctant to cover that beautiful finish (and I have painted cabinets). I don't think knocking down the wall will really give you either, although a wider entry into the kitchen would be a plus. Also, I don't see what new appliances would do for your goal. I would at the least shorten the island to allow more movement in the main kitchen area. Perhaps it could be removed entirely and partly re-used to create a short peninsula at the breakfast nook end, which would save some storage. If you want more "flow" from the family room, even if you knock down the wall, you have a bottleneck with the island and narrow aisles -- if you are hoping to have guests in the kitchen, I think you will need to completely re-design the layout. We have had some talented amateurs here in the past who will help with innovative ideas, so you should consider starting a thread with your house plan. Be sure to look at the "read me first" topic. The floor is beautiful too but I think, with the cabs, adds to the "closed in" feeling. If you make any change to the island or wall, you will have to do some patching in of flooring -- so maybe just changing to something lighter would be a good move. Likewise, the counters are beautiful, but add to the almost monotone feeling. Keep them if you paint the cabs, change to a light/white if you don't. Can you enlarge the window? or add one?...See MoreMIStepMom
