What do you suggest to keep 20 year old green ash's safe from EAB
Comments (3)pay up.. or cut it down.. and put it out of your misery ... there is no other choice.. IF you are in an active EAB area .. are you??? i presume a 20 year old tree is huge.. and he meant 5 to 10 buckets of properly diluted product ... not undiluted product ... call you county extension office or your state forestry department.. and insure that you are at risk ... z6 simply doesnt tell us much of anything where you are ... mine grew like weeds .. from 3 foot whips to 25 foot trees inside of 5 to 7 years.. i treated once.. and then cut them all down while i could still do that with my own saw ... as you note.. i was not willing to pay the cost ... EVERY YEAR FOR ETERNITY ... one thing for sure.. perhaps you ought to consider planting some replacement trees now.. so that when you do get tired of paying thru the nose.. you will have well established trees.. ready to take over ... ken...See MoreHow do I encourage my 2 and 3 year old to appreciate gardening?
Comments (25)I have a 2 1/2 year-old son and we also struggle with working in the yard at times. IT is better this year here are some things I have done... Let them water your containers or play with water. Drexler now tells me the flowers are crying because they are thirsty. I then give him the hose and let him have at it...last night he was right. One of my pansies was thirsty! Get excited about things. Right now EVERY DAY when I get home from work my son asks to go pick the strawberries. We go out and usually a new one is ripe (can't wait a few more weeks). He is still working on not picking the green ones, but he'll learn. Teach them what is yummy. Last year we planted carrots in a container and he would go out and pick a carrot out, wipe it off and eat it. Clean soil, no chemicals and hey he was eating carrots. Teach them to love flowers. How does it smell? How does it taste. Have them help you pick out what ones to pick. Drexler and I will do this together, go into the house and put them in vases and then talk about how pretty they are. I have a small vase by my bed that he empties out every day and replaces the water in...and then the flowers. A bit of a pain, but he is learning to appreciate my yard. Don't freak when they step on a plant, but do teach them to be nice to your plants. I have a large yard and Drex has hurt some of my plants, but we talk about how to treat them. Teach them to watch for bugs and to be interested in them. Ants can keep a kid busy for at least fifteen minutes. Tell yourself you will most likely not get a lot accomplished with your helpers so when you do accomplish something it feels good. Make them an area that is all theirs....See More10 year old queen mattress--should I dump or freecycle?
Comments (16)I agree, I would never buy/take a used mattress. HOWEVER, we bought a furnished condo and it came with a bed/mattress and I had no problem using it. I also have no problem sleeping on beds/mattresses in hotels and they are "used", and they are actually "used" by numerous strangers. So, I really don't know why it would bother me to buy/take a new looking, slightly used mattress from very nice and clean looking stranger, but it would... just seems different than sleeping behind strangers in a hotel bed. But, I'm sure there are lots of people that would love to have the used mattress, and if it was between sleeping on the floor and sleeping on a used mattress...I'm sure I'd take the used mattress....See MoreDo I need to strip my 12 year old deck to restain it
Comments (5)Well I am done stripping / cleaning it. I sprayed the areas that still had a solid color of the old stain with the stripper and then used a power washer to strip it off. Then I sprayed the deck with the brightner and power washed it clean. Some areas that were still left or areas i could not reach with the sprayer I sanded the next day. It went pretty smooth. I was not looking for perfection as the deck is 15 years old and some boards are splintery and splitting. I just wanted to get it looking good for a while longer and maybe in 5 more years replace the decking and railings with composit decking (quote for that this year was $16,000). The deck support is in great condition. Maybe in 5 years I will look into ipe or something? Wish I could do that work myself, i think material would be about $4000, that I can handle, $16k i cannot....See MoreMIStepMom
