Teenage boy shaving?

Hi All,

I am a mother of 14yrs boy. He is insisting that he would like to shave his very light mustache. Though it is visible it is not that thick to shave. I think that he is too young to shave and also he does not realize that it is not one day affair.

My question is Âam I right? Is he not too young to shave already? Also if he starts shaving should I have to take any precautions apart from cutting the skin? Please advice.

I don't think it will hurt him to shave. At that age, it will take a long time for it to grow back enough to shave again. Just because he shaves it doesn't mean it's going to grow back overnight. My boys had enough facial hair to start shaving around 15 or so, but at that point they were only shaving about once every several weeks.

Let him. Find him some nice shaving gel or foam and a good safety razor and let him practice. Fluff can look quite silly on a boy, and why would you ever discourage good grooming? There will be days you wish he wanted to shave and would do so.

I have used fresh wood chips for mulch for years. The local electric companies are happy to bring it to me. This year the county is doing storm clean ups and I was lucky to get a truck load. Again they were happy to drop it for me. I am going to finish moving it today. I have never had any issues from using it on my beds. I have even used it on a new bed that I had done nothing to. It was an area in my yard that I was not able to get grass to grow, and till a few years ago didn't really care as my boys declared it as their area to dig, run their trucks, and pretty much tear it up. It was a hill side. Now my boys drive their trucks for real. That year that I threw fresh wood chip mulch on there I pretty much pulled back the mulch and filled the pocket with good compost and planted in the pockets, yes I did get a bit into the soil below but it was hard as a rock so pretty much didn't do much more than scrape the top. The plants I put there are still there today and did good from day one. Year one I did top dress with more fertilizers than have from there. At the end of the season I leave the old mulch there, top dress with compost, stall waste from the local horse farm and chopped up leaves. Then I do a nice layer of wood mulch. Last summer I went to dig a hole to plant something new, top foot was nice dark loam. Then I hit the old hard clay. Your "boy" is a young man. Young men don't wear rollers. If he starts "rolling" it, he is in for some serious teasing from the other kids and you will be posting on a different forum for bullying. Leave him be. If he keeps it neat and is a good kid, let it be. BTW, DH in his teens had very long hair, most times in a ponytail. Was it horrible for his mother, I would guess maybe/maybe not. Now as an adult his hair is very short (and gray). I think his mom didn't make a big thing out of it and it eventually went away. Please don't roll his hair, just the thought makes me cringe. I have a 16 soon to be 17 yr. old DD, so I know its not easy with the teen thing. As long as he is doing well- respectful, proper behavior in school, decent grades, good friends, nice social life, let it go. There are bigger worries than his long hair IMHO. Best of luck to you.

Our house is THE hang out house for my very social son and his friends. On Friday night, my husband and I were having a quiet dinner in the kitchen when my 16 year old son boiled up from the basement--along with 7 of his pals! They ransacked the kitchen looking for a dessert. I offered them a semi-freddo (Italian frozen cream dessert) I had made for a dinner party but had not served. Their faces lighted up; they fell on it like vultures, and there was only a small morsel left! Our house has always been the magnet for my son's friends. We remodeled the basement some 4 years ago--it is very cozy, and has a big-screen TV, gas fireplace, foosball, bathroom, and refrigerator and freezer (stocked with lots of Trader Joe's foods). It's private, we put in lots of soundproofing--so the noise doesn't bother us--the furniture is comfortable, and they play music, watch movies, and play video games, and have access to my cooking. Our older daughter is away at college, so there are no other siblings around. I'm delighted that our house is the hang out, but I will admit that when schools here were closed for some 9 days (due to the snow) it became a bit much. It felt like I was living in a frat house.

My beloved brother is gay and never had a real girlfriend or dated seriously in high school (in the 70's). He had a lot of girls for friends, was also popular and class president. He did take a girl (a friend) to the prom. If this kid is actually into girls and going out with them on regular basis, I wouldn't think right away that he is gay. And so what if he is? I think it is good that he's not into sex for the fun of it and thinking about the consequences. Somebody should sit down and talk about earnestly with him about sex, birth control and relationships in general. If he might be gay, it would be nice if somebody were open-minded enough and close enough to him to discuss this also in a general way, that it's totally OK and he is loved and regarded well whatever sexual orientation he decides. If he admits that he might be gay, not sure, then I would also discuss disease prevention measures with him. AIDS is on the increase again these days because many young men think that the Rx cocktails are going to prevent them from AIDS, should they test positive for HIV (not true, anymore). It is hard for some folks to digest that a son or relative might be gay, but the risk of disease is high for this group and should be addressed as forthright as those we set forth for our straight sons and daughters.

And it is a myth that hair grows back faster and thicker etc.. I really dislike facial hair on men, looks nasty on "most" men. I wouldn't recognize my own son across the street with all the hair he has on his face. In my opinion they loose their individuality, they all look alike..

How about an electric razer? They don't work great for people who get a 5:00 shadow, but it sounds like it would work well for him.

The issue too isn't "is he ready to shave" It's "is Mom ready to admit her baby is really that grown up that he's ready to shave". How do our babies grow up that fast and get older when we don't. I hate that, don't you. Yes Mom, he did, sad isn't it. Get that picture for your scrap book, your baby is growing up.

None of the above was meant to be mean, or ill spirited, trust me, I've been there..my babies are grown up, one has a baby of her own. The other should really shave his back!!

My husband, very Italian, was shaving in the sixth grade. So, I wasn't surprised when my son started about that age too. I would rather see a bit of thicke stubble than that fine hair that makes them look dirty all the time, if you know what I mean, LOL! Plus, I love it when he smells nice from the shaving cream. He hates, though, because I smooch on him. ;>D

If he's interested, use that to get the job done!
I'm totally with Houseful about that fuzz just making them look dirty.

Shhhh....DD#1 is a hairdresser..she was over yesterday cutting her brothers hair (he's 24)...she uses the hair clippers on his back too....he said it's way better than when he tried to wax his back...WWWWAAAAYYYY less painful!!! But don't tell anyone I told you he does get his back shaved...
