Can two individuals who have the same mother be tested to see if they have the same father?

Yes. They would compare the DNA with the father's DNA and then you would know. But the father has to be willing to do it~you couldn't do it without his DNA to go by or at least leagally they wouldn't do it without his consent. It wouldn't matter if they had the same mother or not. They can tell if a man is the father even if two children have different mothers.

Yes, but I think you have to have a DNA sample from the father too.

Calliope's advice about the legal ramifications of disclosure is very sound. If insurance companies in your area do not have clauses exempting pit bulls and pb mixes from coverage, then it is not an issue right now. However, an increasing number of insurance companies are adding such exemptions to their home owner policies. Also, in answer to your query, most insurance companies and courts will not accept dna breed identification as proof. Forewarned is forearmed. If you disclose that your dog was represented to you as being part pitbull by the adoption group (who probably did so to avoid liability), and your insurance contains such an exemption clause, and your dog bites someone (even a playful nip) and you are sued as a result, you could be in a world of financial hurt. If you do not disclose this, and you are found out, you might be in worse trouble. Calliope was simply providing you with hard legal and economic facts. Your dog doesn't look much like a pit bull to me. If you had called him a lab/boxer mix or a mutt of unknown heritage from the start, and told everyone that you got him from an ad on Craig's list, you would have a far better chance of erasing the alleged ancestry told you second hand by the rescue people. Unfortunately however you have told people, perhaps insurance agents among them, and posted this information here on the internet. It might seem like "nothing" but if you were facing a lawsuit asking for a 10,000 dollar damage payment, insurance companies will leave no stone unturned to discover whether your dog is an exempted breed to avoid paying. Such a lawsuit could result in your dog being declared dangerous and ordered to be put down. This might seem an extreme circumstance but sadly these type of lawsuits are becoming increasingly common. I would qualify Calliope's statement that if you cannot prove or disprove your dog's ancestry, that you might as well not have insurance at all, would only apply to liability incurred by your dog's actions. Homeowner's insurance is still a necessity for all other eventualities, including non-dog-related liability claims such as a visitor slipping and falling on your steps. If you are specifically interested in ethnic information, I wouldn't waste money on a DNA test. This is as detailed as it gets at ancestry and FamilyTreeDNA. If you want to know what town in what country you would be better off spending your money on an ancestry subscription to build a tree. I think anyone just starting would have the best luck with ancestry only because it does a lot of work for you. BUT BE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR FAMILY AND NOT SOMEONE WITH THE SAME NAME! After you get a bit of experience you will find lots of stuff on familysearch, Macavo, and all the other free sites. If I were just starting, I would subscribe to ancestry for the U.S. Discovery for 6 months $89 and build a family tree there. It's free to make a tree and free to keep it there. You can still work on it but you won't have access to any ancestry owned documents unless you are paid up. You can add documents you find other places that you've saved to your computer. One word of warning. When you find a document at ancestry or anywhere, save it to your computer with a good name so you can find it again. Then upload it to your tree if you've a mind to. The document you find today might not be there tomorrow. And beware of "family data" and other trees. Make sure it's right before you use it. Join their mailing list so you know when they run specials. No point in paying full price! Then if you are still interested pay for another 6 months or a year until you have a good handle on it. At this point I would probably use the free sites and the information I gleaned from the green leaf hints. Once you have the U.S. conquered, then if you still need help subscribe to ancestry world for 6 months $134. These are sale prices so watch carefully to be sure you get a good deal. If you let your ancestry subscription elapse they will start offering you a resubscribe deal that's pretty good. Usually 6 months to a year for the really good offer. And notice that the offer is for 6 months, not a year! There are several sites where you can build a tree or upload a GEDcom and work on it for free. But start somewhere until you are familiar with researching this type of thing. Then add some of the other sites. One tree, one site to start. You will be confused enough.

My husband and I have both had the ancestry autosomal test done. It gives its result in terms of "cousins" but using othe information, you can determine if your match to other people are actually nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, parens, etc. You do get information on family origin. Many people who are into genealogy use ancestry because they are working on family trees and you get lists of matches that you can contact. I have found quite a few relatives on both of our families through doing this. My husband has also done a Y DNA test through familytreedna. This test is for following the male line back - in other words, father, grandfather, etc. Again we were trying to get back another generation from his known GGGGGrandfather. I was hoping he would match a know descendant from someone back in 1640. The known descendant of this 1640 guy agreed to pay and take his own test for us. There was no match whatsoever. However, we did get a close match to a 4th cousin that verified back to the GGGGrandfather. We have since made a trip up to the Savannah area, met the family and walked on land owned by the ancestors back in 1785! Familytreedna also does "cousin testing", its called familyfinder and they do Mtdna which is the mother's line. There is a sight called gedmatch where you can upload your results from these tests and find matches to anyone else that has uploaded from any of these tests. So you can get matches from your ancestry autsomal tests from people who tested with familytreedna. If you only want your family origins, then the autosomal is probably the cheapest and right now, through ancestry, its $89, plus shipping. You spit in a tube and mail it back, takes 6-8 weeks for results.

I saw a blurb for a piece on a "news" program saying they tested identical triplets and "you won't believe the results". I didn't see the segment, but I did find a write-up of what appears to be that segment. http://www.insideedition.com/investigative/21784-how-reliable-are-home-dna-ancestry-tests-investigation-uses-triplets-to-find-out The results reported differed across a set of identical triplets, but less than I would have guessed: e.g. One triplet was 6% Scandinavian the other two were 0% I would also have liked for them to have done an "across companies" test where they send the same triplets' DNA samples to three different testing companies, and compare the results across the companies. But being a "news" program, they aren't especially versed in scientific rigor. I think she's wondering if - babies from the same mother can be tested and compared, to see if they have the same father, not who the father is. I think??

TREKaren is correct in what I'm asking about. The question is do the children have the same father? Not who IS the father?

What if the father is not available to give a blood sample (deceased & creamated)? All of his siblings are deceased as well. Is a first cousin on the paternal side close enough?

Your problem with the first cousin is that you really have no way of knowing if the cousin is a legitimate offspring. You think he/she is from the paternal line. If he/she is not, then there would be no match for either child.

Normally, I think that there would be genetic markers present that could be compared. If they were missing from one child and present in the other, you still would not know for sure if this was just because of the randomness of genetic influence or because the children had difference fathers.

I guess probably since the father is not alive, they're may be differnt rules that apply. I just know that to find out who a father is you can't go out and do it on your own without his consent (think I watched too many talkshows or Dateline or something! LOL). It's kind of hard to get DNA from the father then unless they dig him up, but they usually don't rush to do that. Maybe something would even be on record somewhere with his DNA? You never know?

nadastimer has a good idea. There may be blood samples in a hospital or doctors office. If he has not been dead long, there may be hair on a hair brush or something similar to thataround the home.

I think the problem would be to find the DNA markers from the father's sample, then look for the same markers on both the children. I may be wrong, but if the markers are missing, it proves only that he might not be the father, it doesn't PROVE that he could NOT possibily be the father. I think that you would have to find markers that could have been only received from another man to prove without a doubt that the child was not his.
