Can two individuals who have the same mother be tested to see if they have the same father?

Yes. They would compare the DNA with the father's DNA and then you would know. But the father has to be willing to do it~you couldn't do it without his DNA to go by or at least leagally they wouldn't do it without his consent. It wouldn't matter if they had the same mother or not. They can tell if a man is the father even if two children have different mothers.

Yes, but I think you have to have a DNA sample from the father too.

And so we're back to labeling, which is my issue in the first place. I've eaten horse meat, many people in Michigan did in the 70s when the Velsicol Chemical Corporation mixed fire retardant with livestock feed. As a result, a million and a half chickens, about 30,000 cattle, several thousand pigs and sheep were poisoned, slaughtered and just pushed off into landfills. No one knows how much of the meat made it into the food supply. There was a movie, "Bitter Harvest" and a book, "The Poisoning of Michigan". A huge percentage of people in Michigan still test positive for that substance and it causes ongoing health issues such as hypothyroid, immune system malfunctions, skin and liver problems, reproductive issues, who knows what else. Anyway, a lot of us ate horsemeat. That's what was available. I remember a guy came around to the farm and offered Dad 8 cents a pound for the cattle. My husband has done some DNA testing, Autosomal, which is where you match cousins and that is probably what he is asking you to do. The other hubs did was Y testing, trying to find males with the same surname. One thing you can do to have a little more control over the results is to 1) make sure you have the kit number and that you set up the password. I had ordered kits for two people and paid for them myself. This was so I could see the results but I also included their email addresses so they would get results and match notifications as well. Once I determined if hubs was related to them (one yes, one no), then I had them change the passwords so that I can no longer get into their kit information. Our situation is a little different than yours but again in our case, like yours, these were total strangers who agreed to help us out. ] Be aware that there are sites that the DNA information can be downloaded to sites like gedcom where people that have different companies that test can compare results. This person may then have your information out there for anyone to compare your DNA to theirs. Names are not listed, just your kit number and he would probably put his email address as the contact person. There is an option of not putting email address at all but then that limits possible matches from contacting him/you. These are questions you should discuss before you do the test. Know if he is having the results sent to him only, you only, or both. If you have them sent only to you, then you can request him sending his to you and you could be the one who sees if there is a match. The person who hubs did not match still appreciated receiving the information and we still keep in touch. The one who did match has helped confirmed our lines matching back to the GGGF in the late 1700's. The autosomal testing is not as definite. We get matches all the time but the probability is small. It has helped to find some relatives that we weren't sure of. Do you know the name of the company and type of test?

Our son participated in this two years ago, I think. Very interesting....We are very Northern European, German, Scandinavian, Swiss and Scots. His information came back that his paternal ancestry is African... recently (like 1700-1800) from the west coast of Africa. We assume the slave trade. He was/is so thrilled, as he has always had best friends, since 3-4th grade that were black, and this explained to him why he had such a "kinship" with those friends. So facinating. DH husbands' father was adopted by a Swiss; our name is quite unusual... and yet his heritage there is African. Oh, the things we are going to learn in the future.

I’ve had my DNA done through Ancestry and use it mostly for cousin matching. Within each person's ethnicity estimate, you can expand each region to learn more about it. Ancestry has a series of short videos on their DNA test that I found very informative: https://www.ancestry.com/academy/course/ancestry-dna-101 There one video of less than 7 minutes that’s specifically about ethnicity. You might want to check it out. As I recall, it said that the ethnicity estimates go back 500 to 1000 years.

I think she's wondering if - babies from the same mother can be tested and compared, to see if they have the same father, not who the father is. I think??

TREKaren is correct in what I'm asking about. The question is do the children have the same father? Not who IS the father?

What if the father is not available to give a blood sample (deceased & creamated)? All of his siblings are deceased as well. Is a first cousin on the paternal side close enough?

Your problem with the first cousin is that you really have no way of knowing if the cousin is a legitimate offspring. You think he/she is from the paternal line. If he/she is not, then there would be no match for either child.

Normally, I think that there would be genetic markers present that could be compared. If they were missing from one child and present in the other, you still would not know for sure if this was just because of the randomness of genetic influence or because the children had difference fathers.

I guess probably since the father is not alive, they're may be differnt rules that apply. I just know that to find out who a father is you can't go out and do it on your own without his consent (think I watched too many talkshows or Dateline or something! LOL). It's kind of hard to get DNA from the father then unless they dig him up, but they usually don't rush to do that. Maybe something would even be on record somewhere with his DNA? You never know?

nadastimer has a good idea. There may be blood samples in a hospital or doctors office. If he has not been dead long, there may be hair on a hair brush or something similar to thataround the home.

I think the problem would be to find the DNA markers from the father's sample, then look for the same markers on both the children. I may be wrong, but if the markers are missing, it proves only that he might not be the father, it doesn't PROVE that he could NOT possibily be the father. I think that you would have to find markers that could have been only received from another man to prove without a doubt that the child was not his.
