A good place to visit with a seven year old?

I posted this question on the 'vacations board', but I didn't get many responses. I'm trying to plan our vaction we have one son who is seven years old (actually he will be 8 in May) anyway, can anyone tell me a great vacation spot to go with a child? I live in WV, so I prefer to stay in the east. We've been to Disney World--we love it but can't afford it this year. We were thinking about going to Hershey Park in PA and Gettysburg but I'm afraid Gettysburg will bore my son. I'd love any ideas from you? Thanks so much!

My grandmother took me on a trip when I was 11 to Gettysberg, hershey park (saw the factory but no rides), We went to The Snyder Pretzel factory, Philadelphia to see the Franklin Mint, Liberty Bell etc.. and then to DC to see the Smithsonian. I loved it and I wasnt much of a history buff and still dont have much of an interest. Our 8yr old would love it, he loves to read about war. I also went to Lake Placid NY when I was 8, got to see Santas Village and lots of fishing spots if he likes that. I am not sure his interests, Our son would love to go anywhere fishing and canoeing for a week. Niagara Falls is not to far but to have fun you need lots of money for all the attractions.

Williamsburg Virginia! They have a lot of kid friendly stuff....like tricorn hats...mock battles....people in costume crafts for kids...and history.
Took our son there when he was 7....wondering if he would get anything out of it....and he sat bolt upright in bed one night....said "Thomas Jefferson"...and fall back down...sound asleep!....so something was sinking in! LOL!
Also...the outter banks are great for kids....and if you want to drive a bit how about Sturbridge Village, Plymouth plantation, Boston and The Cape?

In winter, you need to put the pot into a much larger container of some kind (that's unlikely to crack in the cold), and use mulch of some kind (hay, moss, etc.) stuffed between the pots, with some on top, and put the whole thing in a shed or something... if not a hole dug into the ground prior to freeze-up, but not under a rain gutter drip.

Buy him a game. The Reading Rabbit and Jump Start series are excellent. The childrens' sites on the web are not always a safe place for him to be, especially if he knows how to navigate the web. You would have to be checking his access to them all the time. You also do not want to encourage him to go to chat rooms as these are a favorite place for kooks that like to prey on children. I have seen some of the sites that my 10 year old g'son gets to, and I do not think that all of them are suitable. Learning games are interesting and will keep him amused with a mimimum of your time. There are even ones for the toddler age group. They are not expensive and are well worth every dime. I assume that he may be in the fourth grade. Get him those designed for the fifth grade. They will strenghten his skills. The simplest "Sim City" games are also good. Stay away from the Disney things as they are just too, too, cutsey to interest a boy.

Thanks everyone! I found a bunch of places online, took many of your suggestions, and sent out a list of what we needed and pictures. Of about 10 sent out, I got four responses. Two were RIDICULOUSLY priced (over 2K for just the trim in our kitchen). I also have a local lumberyard that can do it--I have a piece of the baseboard off, which helps in getting the knives made. The casing is exactly the same, except coved on two sides instead of one. The rosettes would be hand done on a laithe. But their price for just the trim and not the rosettes was about $1050. So far, the cheapest and easiest to work with has been through Jim Illingsworth near Watertown, NY. It's about a 3 hour drive for us--which, in my husband's Silverado, would mean about $50 in gas...but would save us about $150-200 in shipping, depending on how much we're getting. I'm probably going to go with them, unless I can get the local yard to match their price, but I doubt it. If anyone's interested, here's their link. I haven't gotten anything done from them yet, so I can't vouch for their quality, but it seems like the company's pretty decent from what I've read online. Anyone ever heard of them? This is NOT a situation where a typical insurance adjustor/appraiser is of much use - this is beyond their area of expertise. You do need a landscape professional - either a consulting arborist or a certified horticulturist. Or even better, a member of the Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers (CTLA). With the exception of larger, established trees (and a few other exceptions), the value is that of replacement cost of the closest sized same species shrub (and the associated costs of removal and replanting). Other than trees, there is little value added to plantings based on age or degree of maturity, unfortunately, and one is seldom able to replace shrubs on a size-by-size direct replacement.......nurseries just do not sell 40 y.o. boxwoods or lilacs!! But there are recognized formulas available for calculating the value of mature, established trees that factor in species, size, condition and location. You need to hire someone properly versed in this sort of evaluation - it is quite a specific skill set and not one that your homeowner's insurance adjuster is likely to have under his/her belt.

My in-laws live in Columbus, and we have been to the Columbus Zoo several times, which in my opinion is one (if not the best)zoo in the east. I've been to the DC zoo and although it was great the Columbus zoo is even better! :)

There is also the Crayola Factory in Easton, PA right on the NJ border. I used to live maybe 10 mins. from there. Columbus Zoo is also cool (I'm from Ohio originally). Maybe the Pro Football Hall of fame in Canton? (that might be stretching it a bit unless he likes sports!)

There's lot's to do in Pittsburgh if you want a close by big(ish) city experience. They have brand new football and baseball stadiums. Lots of very good museums. Kennywood Park is a great amusement park with old time rides and new super rollercoasters. They also have in the summer lots of festivals at Point State Park and they have a big regatta festival on the rivers with speed boat racing, etc.
