Bar Mitzvah etiquette (for Catholics)

Posted by gingersnap (My Page) on

My family has been invited to a Bar Mitzvah (our first). Do we bring a gift? What would be an appropriate gift? Will they offer my husband and sons the hats (yamakas?) like they do at weddings? Are they supposed to wear them even though we are not Jewish? Do we say mazeltoff (sp?) or congratulations? Sorry I'm clueless but I want to do the right thing. This boy is my son's best friend.

Thanks! Gingersnap

Yes, bring a gift. In NY it is cutomary to give money (a check). You should check with your local friends to see what is traditional there. They will probably offer your husband a yarmulke (skullcap). Anyone may wear them. You do not have to be Jewish. Say whatever makes you feel good. Mazel Tov is traditional but contratulations will be appreciated as well.

Please have fun. The Bar Mitzvah family wants you to enjoy yourself. They will understand if you don't know what to do.
